RESEARCH PROJECT

Effective communication of ideas sometimes requires a writer/speaker to research a topic in

order to establish credibility and demonstrate all the information about a topic. Proper research
skills require the following: curiosity about a topic, locating sources, reading information, taking
notes, and presenting information.
You will choose one of the topics below to research. Before you begin looking for sources, you
will need to create a preliminary focus - decide what you want to know and prove about the
topic. Follow the guidelines below.

1. Choose a topic to research.

2. Create a focus question or statement.
3. Locate at least one source (NO WIKIPEDIA OR GENERAL GOOGLE INFORMATION).
4. Record the source information.
5. Read the source and look for information that satisfies what you want to know about the
topic.
6. Take notes. Notes should focus on the above (#5).
7. Decide what information from your notes will be useful for your presentation.
8. Write an outline that organizes your information.
9. Create slides with information and pictures (visuals) that explain the information you
found about the topic and your focus on that topic.
10.Share the project with the class.

TOPIC CHOICES:

1. Famous inventions and/or inventors

2. Great moments in sports
3. A moment/experience changed or enhanced by music or a great moment in the music
industry
4. Mysteries (ghosts, the Bermuda Triangel, "monsters" - bigfoot, Lochness monster ....)
5. Famous scandals

*Specific topics cannot be chosen by more than one person.

Example of taking a general topic and creating a focus.

General topic - mysteries

Narrowed to/Focus - Did a UFO actually fly over Kecksburg, PA in 1965 and dump material in
the woods?
Research - I will locate articles/information about the incident and determine if the evidence is
strong enough for me to convince my audience that it really happened. I will first inform my
audience about what happened - so I need to take notes on what happened or what was
reported as happening. I will also need to find specific information that helps me convince my
audience to agree with my view of the incident.
