WARNING
Wear appropriate protective items, such as safety
glasses and steel-toed shoes, when performing main-
tenance work. Read and follow all applicable proce-
dures in the Control of Hazardous Energy section of
this service manual.

Checking the brake for wear


1. Raise and block the mast high enough to access
the brakes. See SAFETY / Control of Hazardous
Energy / Lifting and Blocking section in the service
and parts manual.
2. Turn off the lift truck.
3. Put the chocks against the wheels.
4. Disconnect the battery. See the Control of Hazard-
ous Energy section and lockout and tagout the lift
truck.
5. Lockout/tagout the lift truck. See the SAFETY / 1
Control of Hazardous Energy / Lockout/tagout sec-
tion of the service and parts manual.
6. See Figure 1. Insert a 0.70–0.75 mm (0.028–
0.030 in) feeler gauge in the slot (2) between the
magnet and armature. If the feeler gauge fits be-
tween the magnet and armature, the rotor is worn
and must be replaced. 2
Technician Tips: The slot (2) is located in front of the
brake assembly (1).

Disassembling the brake
1. Move the lift truck to a service area on level floor.
2. Raise and block the mast high enough to access
the brakes. See the SAFETY / Control of Hazard-
ous Energy / Lifting and Blocking section in the ser-
vice and parts manual.
3. Disconnect the battery.
4. Lockout/tagout the lift truck. See the SAFETY /
Control of Hazardous Energy / Lockout/tagout sec-
tion in the service and parts manual.
5. Remove the floorboards.

6. See Figure 3. Disconnect the left brake connector


CA627 (9) and the right brake connector CA628.
7. Remove the three screws (1) and the brake from
the traction motor using a hex key wrench.
8. Remove the brake from the lift truck.
9. Disassemble the brake.
10. Inspect all parts for wear including the brake hub
on the traction motor. Replace parts as necessary.

Assembling the brake

WARNING
Installing the wrong quantity of brake springs or placing
them in the wrong location would negatively affect nor-
mal braking performance and cause serious injury.

1. See Figure 2. Install the three springs on the left


brake (2).

2. Install the six springs on the right brake.
3. See Figure 3. Put the brake on the traction motor
and secure with the three screws (1). Torque the
screws to 8–9 N m (6–7 ft lb).
4. Connect the left brake connector CA627 (9) and
the right brake connector CA628.
5. Install the floorboards.
6. Remove the lockout/tagout device.
7. Connect the battery.
8. Remove the blocks and lower the mast. See the
SAFETY / Control of Hazardous Energy / Lifting
and Blocking section in the service and parts man-
ual.

9. Remove the chocks from the wheels.
