First Semester 2022-2023

Mid-Semester Test
(EC-2 Regular)

Course No. : ENGGZC232 / PEZC234 (Merged)

Course Title : Engineering Materials
Nature of Exam : Open Book
Weightage : 30% (As per Course Handout) No. of Pages = 2
Duration : 2 Hours No. of Questions = 6
Date of Exam : 24/09/2022 (FN)
Note to Students:
1. Please follow all the Instructions to Candidates given on the cover page of the answer book.
2. All parts of a question should be answered consecutively. Each answer should start from a fresh page.
3. Assumptions made if any, should be stated clearly at the beginning of your answer.

Q.1. Bicycle frames are made using the following materials shown in the table below. If a steel-
frame bicycle weighs 14 kg, what will be the weight of the frame assuming we use
aluminium, titanium, and a carbon-fiber reinforced composite to make the frame in such a
way that the volume of frame (the diameter of the tubes) can be constant. The respective
density values can be found below in the table. [4]
Materials Density (g/cm3)
Steel 7.8
Aluminium alloy 2.7
Titanium alloy 4.5
Carbon-fiber reinforced composites (CFRP) 1.85

Q.2. (a) Please provide proper justification “Why wood is a composite?” [2]
(b) Graphite and diamond are both made from carbon atoms. Explain why both materials
offer different set of properties. [2]
Q.3. (a) What property of material must be taken into account while designing a car body
sheets? Why that specific property is important? [1.5]
(b) What are the inputs and outputs of the phase diagram? [1.5]
Q.4. Draw corresponding planes and directions for the below given miller indices. [4]
A) [1 0] , [2 2]
B) (0 1 2), (1 0 1)
C) (2 2 2), (1 0 0)
Q.5. In A-B system, eutectic reaction occurs at 577°C and phases α (containing 1.65 wt % B),
liquid (containing 12.6 wt% B) and pure B are in equilibrium. The solubility of α-phase
decreases with decreasing temperature. Melting point of A and B are 660°C and 1410°C
respectively. Find:
A) Plot an approximate phase diagram. [3]
B) Calculate the weight fractions of α in an alloy containing 10% B at 577°C. [3]

Q.6. In the following perfect 2D copper crystal figure below, the Burgers circuit is shown.
Please draw the crystal lattice for the following cases with defects.
Case I. Introduce two edge dislocations one on the upper half and other on the lower half.
Case II. Introduce two edge dislocation adjacent to each other on the upper half of crystal
structure.
For both the cases, Find the following:
A) Draw and label the type of strain induces by these dislocations to the surrounding
lattices. [3]
B) Draw the Burgers circuit around the dislocations and find the magnitude and direction
of dislocations. [3]
C) Discuss the characteristics of dislocations in each cases. [3]
