Basic publications are assigned a part number which appears on the title page with the date of the issue. Subsequent revisions are identified by the addition of a
revision code after the part number. A1 after a part number denotes the first revision to the basic publication, A2 the second, etc. Occasionally, it is necessary to
completely reissue and reprint a publication for the purpose of obsoleting a previous issue and outstanding revisions thereto. As these replacement reissues are made,
the code will also change to the next successive letter of the alphabet at each reissue. For example, B for the first reissue, C for the second, etc.

When ordering a manual, give the basic number, and the reissue code when applicable, if a complete up-to-date publication is desired. Should only revision pages
be required, give the basic number and revision code for the particular set of revision pages you desire.

INTRODUCTION
This manual provides maintenance instructions and an illustrated parts breakdown for the 115-810021, 99-810057,
115-820046 and 50-820208 series landing gear actuators used on the King Air F90, 99 Airliner series, King Air 100
series and Super King Air 200 series airplanes.

Overhauls of Hawker Beechcraft Corporation (HBC) Landing Gear Actuators (P/N’s 115-810021, 99-810057, 115-
820046, and 50-820208) shall be performed by HBC approved and authorized overhaul facilities or by an FAA
Repair Station or Facility that is approved and authorized to perform this type of procedure. The information and
instructions contained in this manual are intended for the use of these approved facilities ONLY.

Several modifications are detailed in these procedures. If modifications are incorporated, the actuator assembly
should be reidentified to the part number or dash number to which it conforms. An assembly should be reidentified
to a different part number ONLY after ALL the hardware upgrades listed for that configuration have been
incorporated. Hawker Beechcraft Corporation REQUIRES that ALL of the modifications listed herein be
accomplished.

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

The landing gear actuator is attached to the landing gear motor drive through the actuator pinion. As the actuator
pinion turns, it drives the actuator screw housing which in turn drives the actuator screw. An actuator nut is threaded
to accept the actuator screw. As the actuator screw rotates within the nut it forces the nut in or out of the actuator
assembly, depending upon the direction of rotation of the actuator screw. A clevis is attached to the actuator nut and
to the drag leg assembly. As the nut and clevis move in or out of the actuator assembly, it causes retraction or
extension of the landing gear, as selected by the operator of the landing gear control in the pilot’s compartment.

MAIN LANDING GEAR ACTUATORS (F90, 99 SERIES, 100 SERIES AND 200 SERIES)
TESTING AND TROUBLESHOOTING
Each actuator must be functional tested to assure proper operation. If the actuator nut and screw have been reused
as a matched set, it is not necessary to perform a functional test to test the actuator assembly. It is necessary to run
all operations on a new actuator nut and screw in order to properly seat the mating thread surfaces and ensure
proper operation of the actuator.

A test fixture is needed during maintenance and functional testing of the main landing gear actuator. This fixture will
provide the support and the means of operating the actuator. Limit switches must be provided to limit the travel of
the actuator. The test fixture should also provide the means of applying the required tension and compression loads
to the actuator assembly. A properly designed fixture may be utilized during the disassembly and assembly of the
actuator assembly for checking end play and for performing proof tests of components during the inspection.

The Landing Gear Actuator Test Fixture, P/N 115-810021/934, used by Hawker Beechcraft Corporation during the
manufacture and overhaul of the main landing gear actuator assemblies, meets these requirements. A test fixture,
which will meet the requirements, may be designed and built for this purpose.

a. Operate the actuator by hand to determine that the pinion does not bind. Secure the actuator in a manner to
resist tension and compression loads applied to the clevis (51) at the same points and in much the same manner
as if the actuator were mounted in the airplane (Refer to Figure 2). Connect a power unit to the pinion shaft.
Provide limit switches for limiting the travel in either direction to prevent bottoming out of the actuator. Operate
the actuator at a speed to obtain a full extension or retraction in 8 to 9 seconds. The function test loads of the
main landing gear actuator are all tension loads. Compression loads are used only in the measurement of the
end play of the actuator screw and nut.

b. Apply a tension load of 675 to 725 pounds to the clevis (51). Rotate the pinion in both directions to determine
that there is a minimum of 0.002 inch backlash between the pinion (27) and the screw housing (13). The pinion
must not bind.

c. Run a minimum of 6 cycles with the load of 675 to 725 pounds tension applied. Allow the actuator to cool for at
least 5 minutes after each 3 cycles of extension and retraction.

d. Remove the tension load. Measure the end play of the actuator assembly. Attach a dial indicator to record the
relative motion of the actuator nut (32) and the housing bottom (30). Apply a tension load of 100 to 180 pounds.
Record the indication of the dial indicator. Remove the tension load and apply a compression load of 100 to 180
pounds. Record the end play, as indicated by the dial indicator. End play tolerances shall not exceed those listed
in step g.

e. Apply a tension load of 2150 to 2250 pounds. Operate through a minimum of 3 cycles at a speed of between 10
to 18 seconds per cycle. Allow the actuator to cool at least 5 minutes between each three cycles. The actuator
must not squeal, bind or bottom out.

f. Increase the tension load to 3650 to 3750 pounds. Operate the actuator one cycle. It must not bind, squeal or
bottom out.

g. Remove the tension load. Check the end play of the actuator assembly in the manner described earlier in Step
d. The end play must not have increased during functional test. Assembly end play, measured between the nut
and the housing, may be a maximum of 0.005 inch greater than screw to nut end play. However, total end play
shall not exceed 0.010 inch.

DISASSEMBLY
The following instructions are for the disassembly of the main landing gear actuator.

a. Remove the actuator brake assembly by removing the nut (22), washer (21), spring (20), spacer (19), washer
(5), and bolt (6) (Refer to Figure 2). Remove nut (7), washer (8), bolt (43), spacer (16), washer (17) and washer
(18). Do not remove washer (15) or nut (14) from the bolt (43). Tag and identify the brake halves (4) for reuse
as a matched set.

b. Install a spare bolt (31) in the housing in place of the bolt (43) removed with the brake assembly. Secure the
bolt (31) and tighten to a torque of 50 to 70 inch-pounds.

c. Perform an actuator screw and nut end play inspection as follows:

1. Remove the boot (1). Remove the cover (2) by removing or loosening the bolt (12), washers (11 and 25)
and nut (26). After removal of the cover (2), replace the bolt (12), washers (11 and 25) and nut (26).

2. Secure the actuator, supporting the actuator and resisting the compression and tension forces at the same
points and in much the same manner as if the actuator were mounted in the airplane.

3. Mount a dial indicator to measure the movement of the actuator nut (32) relative to that of the actuator screw
(3). This may be accomplished by clamping a dial indicator fixture to the actuator nut assembly and placing
the dial indicator sensing device against the head of the actuator screw (3).

NOTE: An erroneous reading will be obtained if the dial indicator is attached to the clevis (51) or the actuator
housing (35).

4. Apply a force of 100 to 180 pounds tension and compression to the clevis (51). Record the end play between
the nut and the screw.

NOTE: The end play is to be checked at each of three positions: The actuator screw full in then backed off one
turn; the actuator screw extended one half its travel; and the actuator extended 7 inches.

If the end play is 0.009 inch or less, the actuator nut (32) and the actuator screw (3) may be reused as a matched
set after reconditioning. If the end play exceeds 0.009 inch, visually inspect the screw (3) in accordance with the
CHECK AND REPAIR section. If no defects are found, replace the actuator nut (32) and repeat Step c.

NOTE: The replacement of both the actuator screw (3) and the actuator nut (32) may be required to achieve
an acceptable end play.

d. If the end play is acceptable, run the actuator nut fully into the actuator to the fully retracted position. Make
alignment marks on the side of the actuator nut (32) and on the head of the actuator screw (3) in order that the
thread relationship of the nut and screw may be maintained upon reassembly. (The screw has a double lead
thread.)

e. Secure the actuator and apply pressure to compress the spring (50) and permit the removal of the bolt (34).
Remove the clevis (51) and the spring (50).

f. Rotate the nut (32) to partially extend the nut. Remove the bolt (12). Push the actuator nut (32) toward the
retracted position, thus forcing the actuator screw (3) from the screw housing (13). Remove the screw by
unscrewing it from the nut. Pull the nut from the actuator. Tag the nut and the screw for reuse as a matched set.

g. Remove the seal ring (48) from the nut. Remove and discard the packing (49).

h. Remove the bolts (31) and the spare bolt (31) installed in step b. from the actuator housing (35). Remove the
housing bottom (30) and shims (41). Remove and discard the packing (44) from the housing bottom (30).
Remove the cover (9), upper bearing (24) and the screw housing (13) by pressing the screw housing (13) from
the lower bearing (39).

i. Remove the lower bearing (39) from the housing (35).

j. Remove the upper bearing (24) from the screw housing (13).

k. Remove and discard the seal (10) from the cover (9).

l. Remove the snap ring (38) from the shaft of the pinion (27). Remove the pinion from the housing (35). Remove
the shims (37), the inner bearing (28) and the outer bearing (36). Tag and identify the screw housing (13) and
the pinion (27) for reuse as a matched set. If it is necessary to scrap either the screw housing or the pinion, both
must be replaced with a new or serviceable matched set.

The following are parts Hawker Beechcraft Corporation recommends be replaced at each repair event.

* The 115-810024-1 cover is interchangeable with the 115-810024-3 cover if there is no evidence of wear or damage
to the 115-810024-1 cover.

NOTE: The bolt and linkage attaching the actuator clevis (51) to the landing gear assembly must be changed when
installing an actuator with a 99-810047 clevis for the first time.

Inspect and repair the actuator components as follows:

a. Bottom Housing (30) P/N 115-810022-3 or 99-810051: Remove and discard any bottom housing, P/N 115-
810022-3. Replace with a 99-810051 bottom housing. Visually inspect the bottom housing assembly. If there is
evidence of damage or of corrosion, replace the housing. Inspect the bushings. If no damage or severe wear is
visible, the housing assembly may be reused without further action, except replacement of the packing (44). If
there is evidence of physical damage, or if the bushings require replacement, remove and discard the bushings
(40 and 45). Strip the paint from the housing bottom (30). Perform a Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection for cracks
per specification MIL-I-6866. If no damage exists, reapply corrosion preventative per specification MIL-C-5541
for the 99-810051 housing bottom. Replace the bushings (40 and 45).

NOTE: DU bushings are a composition of three bonded layers. The base is a backing material of sheet steel.
A layer of porous bronze, approximately 0.010 inch thick is bonded to it. The pores of the bronze are
filled with a mixture of teflon and lead. A surface layer, approximately 0.001 inch thick, of the same teflon
and lead mixture completes the composition of the DU bushing material. It is normally recommended
that bushings of DU material be replaced at the time of each repair event, however, some bushings may
be difficult to remove without damaging the assembly in which they are mounted. When this is the case,
a visual inspection of the bushing must be made to determine whether replacement is required.
During the running-in period of a DU bushing, the surface may acquire a gray-green coloration and any
excess of the surface layer of the material will shed as feathery particles. When a fully run-in DU
bushing is examined, it will have a surface appearance similar to that of a bronze bushing. This provides
a visual indication that the bushing is operating correctly. The bushings must be replaced if it appears
that its useful life will be exceeded during the next service period before repair.

b. Actuator Housing (35) P/N 115-810023-1 or 115-810023-3: Remove and discard any actuator housing P/N 115-
810023-1. Replace with an 115-810023-3 actuator housing. Inspect the housing (35) for wear or damage. If
there is no evidence of wear or damage, reuse the housing (35) without further action. If there is evidence of
damage, strip the paint from the housing and perform a Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection for cracks per
specification MIL-I-6866. If there are no cracks or damage to warrant replacement, reapply corrosion
preventative per specification MIL-C-5541 on the 115-810023-3 housing.

c. Cover (9) P/N 115-810024-1 or 115-810024-3: Remove and discard any cover P/N 115-810024 or 115-810024-
1 and replace with a 115-810024-3 cover. Visually inspect the cover (9) for damage. If there is no evidence of
damage, a 115-810024-3 cover may be reused without further action. If there is evidence of minor damage, strip
the paint and perform a Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection for cracks per specification MIL-I-6866. Apply
corrosion preventative per specification MIL-C-5541 on the 115-810024-3 cover.

d. Screw Housing (13) P/N 115-810025-1: Visually inspect for wear or damage. The 0.3750 to 0.3765 inch
diameter hole may wear to a maximum diameter of 0.3775 inch. If this dimension is acceptable and a careful
visual inspection reveals no severe wear, chipped or broken teeth, or other visible damage, perform a magnetic
particle inspection for cracks per specification MIL-I-6868. If the cadmium plating is scratched or worn through,
strip and replate per specification QQ-P-416, Type II, Class 2 that portion of the screw housing that was
originally plated. Do not plate the gear or any portion of the screw housing (13) that will be enclosed within the
actuator assembly. If the screw housing must be scrapped, replace the screw housing (13) and the pinion (27)
as a matched set.

NOTE: Do not paint any portion of the screw housing that will be contacted by the brake assembly.

e. Pinion (27) P/N 115-810028-3: Visually inspect for wear or damage. The 0.4716 to 0.4720 inch outside diameter
of the shaft of the pinion, where it mates with the universal joint, may wear to a minimum diameter of 0.4714
inch. Perform a magnetic particle inspection for cracks per specification MIL-I-6868. If there is no excessive
wear or damage, no severely worn or chipped teeth, the pinion may be reused without further action. If the pinion
is to be replaced, replace the pinion (27) and the screw housing (13) as a matched set.

f. Actuator Nut (32) P/N 115-810029-1 or 115-810029-2: If the end play inspection results are acceptable for the
actuator screw (3) and the actuator nut (32), visually inspect the actuator nut (32) for wear or damage. The 0.375
to 0.379 inch diameter hole may wear to a maximum diameter of 0.384 inch. If there is no damage or severe
wear requiring replacement, visually inspect the area of the electron beam weld using a 3 to 10 power
magnification. If there is evidence of cracks, the nut assembly must be replaced. If the plating is scratched or
worn through, strip and rechrome the shaft of the nut assembly per specification QQ-C-320A, Type II, Class 2.
Re-cadmium plate the remainder of the nut assembly per specification QQ-P-416, Type II, Class 2.

NOTE: Do not plate any of the threaded portion of the nut assembly.

After completion of the cadmium plating, perform a hydrogen embrittlement relief at 375°F for 3 hours. If the
actuator nut must be scrapped, replace the actuator nut (32) and the screw (3) as a matched set.

g. Actuator Screw (3) P/N 115-810030-1 or 115-810030-2: If the end play inspection of the actuator screw (3) and
the actuator nut (32) are acceptable, visually inspect the actuator screw (3) for the wear or damage. The 0.3750
to 0.3765 inch diameter hole through the head of the screw may wear to a maximum diameter of 0.3775 inch.
Check the diameter of the grease flow hole next to the head of the screw. Any actuator screw having a grease
flow hole with a diameter of 0.060 to 0.070 inch must be reworked by drilling the hole to a diameter of 0.115 to
0.125 inch. Remove all chips and burrs. Perform a magnetic particle inspection for cracks per specification MIL-
I-6868. If there is no evidence of damage or excessive wear, the part may be reused. If the actuator screw
requires replacement, replace the actuator screw (3) and the actuator nut (32) as a matched set.

h. Spring (50) P/N 115-810031: Check the compression load of the spring at 1.20 inch. The load must be 186 to
226 pounds. If the plating is scratched or worn through, re-cadmium plate per specification QQ-P-416, Type II,
Class 2, and hydrogen embrittlement relieve at 375°F for 3 hours.

CAUTION: The spring must not be flexed after plating prior to the hydrogen embrittlement relief treatment.

i. Clevis (51) P/N 115-810032 or 99-810047:

NOTE: A 115-810032 clevis must be replaced with a 99-810047 clevis for increased service life of the actuator
clevis and attaching linkage.

Visually inspect the clevis (51) for severe wear or damage. The 0.500 to 0.504 inch diameter of the hole of the
clevis may wear to 0.514 inch maximum. The 0.613 inch length of the slot may wear to a maximum of 0.643
inch. The 0.376 to 0.386 inch width of the slot may wear to a maximum of 0.416 inch. The 1.001 to 1.004 inch
outside diameter of the clevis shaft may wear to a minimum diameter of 0.998 inch. If the dimensions are within
tolerance, perform a magnetic particle inspection for cracks per specification MIL-I-6868. If the plating is
scratched or worn through, strip and cadmium plate per specification QQ-P-416, Type II, Class 2.

j. Visually inspect the following parts. Parts that show no severe wear or damage may be reused.

ASSEMBLY
Refer to CHECK AND REPAIR for parts required for updating of the actuators. Reidentification of the actuators may
only be accomplished after all the listed parts have been installed.

Refer to Figure 2 for parts index. Replace all rejected parts with new or serviceable parts.

a. All integral parts, cavities, openings and threaded areas must be kept free of chips and foreign particles during
and after reassembly. Pack the open sides of the upper bearing (24) and the lower bearing (39) with a grease
that conforms to specification MIL-G-21164 or with Molytex Grease No. 2. Coat the inner surfaces of the housing
(35) and the housing bottom (30) with the same grease.

NOTE: When the use of a lubricant is required during the reassembly of the actuator, use only grease conforming
to MIL-G-21164 or use Molytex Grease No. 2 (P/N of Texaco Inc., 135 East 42nd St., New York, N.Y.)

b. Press the upper bearing (24) onto the screw housing (13) with the seal of the bearing away from the gear. Install
the screw housing (13) and the upper bearing (24) into the housing (35). Press the bearing until it seats firmly
against the shoulder of the housing (13).

CAUTION: The lower bearing (39) is a thrust bearing and must be installed correctly to resist thrust.

c. Press the lower bearing (39) onto the screw housing (13) with the thrust side of the bearing (as marked on the
outer bearing race) away from the housing (35). Install the packing (44) into the housing bottom (30). Coat the
packing with grease. Install the cover (9) and the housing bottom (30) with sufficient shims (41) between the
housing (35) and the bottom (30) to prevent preloading the bearings when tightening the bolts (31).

NOTE: Use a substitute bolt (31) in place of bolt (43) during functional test, then install bolt (43) during
installation of the brake assembly.

d. Tighten the bolts (31) to a torque of 50 to 70 inch-pounds. Add or remove shims (41) as required between the
housing (35) and the housing bottom (30) to obtain an end play of 0.0005 inch minimum to 0.004 inch maximum.

CAUTION: This adjustment is critical for the proper operation of the actuator. It must be made with the upper
bearing (24) completely in place, the lower bearing (39) installed in the correct direction, and prior
to the installation of the pinion (27).

e. Use a feeler gage to measure the gap between the housing (35) and the cover (9). Remove the cover (9). Use
sufficient number of shims (23) to fill the gap between the housing (35) and the cover (9). Tighten the bolts (31)
and determine that the end play of the screw housing (13) has not changed.

f. Disassemble the components as necessary to install the pinion (27) and the bearing (28). Be sure to note the
quantity of shims (41) required between the housing (35) and the housing bottom (30) to obtain the correct end
play of the screw housing (13) and the correct number of shims (23) to fill the gap between the housing (35) and
the cover (9).

g. Pack the inner pinion bearing (28) and the outer pinion bearing (36) with a grease conforming to MIL-G-21164
or with Molytex Grease No. 2. Coat the inner surface of the housing (35) with the same grease.

Page 7

h. Install the inner pinion bearing (28) on the pinion (27) with the “VEE” mark on the outer bearing race pointing
away from the pinion gear as shown in the illustration (Refer to Figure 2).

CAUTION: The inner pinion bearing (28) is a thrust bearing and must be installed correctly.

i. Install the pinion (27) and the inner pinion bearing (28) in the housing (35). Install the outer pinion bearing (36),
the shim (37) and the snap ring (38). Adjust the laminated peel shim (37) to obtain 0.000 to 0.003 inch end play
of the pinion (27).

NOTE: Measure the end play of the pinion between the snap ring (38) and the shim (37) using a feeler gage.

Apply a tension load of 150 pounds to the pinion. Recheck the end play of the pinion. If the thrust bearing (inner
pinion bearing) is incorrectly installed, this force will unseat the bearing, causing excessive end play. The
bearing must then be removed, replaced with a new bearing, and installed correctly. Determine that the pinion
turns freely without binding.

j. Install the seal (10) into the cover (9) with the open side of the seal toward the exterior surface of the cover (9).

NOTE: The seal must not be painted.

k. Install the upper bearing (24) and the screw housing (13) into the housing (35). Install the cover (9) and the
quantity of shims determined necessary to fill the gap between the housing (35) and the cover (9). Pack the
space between the screw housing and the housing with grease that conforms to specification MIL-G-21164 or
with Molytex Grease No. 2. Install the vent (29) and the lower bearing (39). Install the shims (23) required for
the end play of the screw housing (13). Install the housing bottom (30) and the bolts (31). (Use a spare bolt (31)
in place of the bolt (43) until after completion of the actuator functional test and the installation of the brake
assembly.) Tighten the bolts uniformly to a torque of 50 to 70 inch-pounds. Recheck the end play of the screw
housing (13) and of the pinion (27). The screw housing end play must be within the limits of 0.0005 to 0.004
inch. The end play of the pinion must be within 0.000 to 0.003 inch.

l. Install the packing (49) on the seal ring (48). Coat the packing with grease. Insert the seal ring into the actuator
nut (32).

m. Place the spring (50) onto the clevis (51) and insert the clevis into the actuator nut (32). Apply pressure to
compress the spring sufficiently to insert the bolt (34) through the actuator nut and clevis. Secure the bolt with
washer (33), washer (47) and nut (46). Do NOT torque the nut. Tighten it only sufficiently to obtain an end play
of the bolt (34) of 0.005 to 0.040 inch.

n. Determine that the seal ring (48) is against the clevis (51). Fill the actuator nut assembly with a grease
conforming to specification MIL-G-21164 or with Molytex Grease No. 2. Use care to prevent entrapped air.

o. Coat the packing (44) in the housing bottom (30) with the same grease. Insert the nut assembly into the actuator
assembly, using care not to damage the packing in the bottom assembly. Push the nut assembly into the
actuator assembly to the fully retracted position.

p. Install the screw (3) into the nut assembly. Allow the excess grease to flow out of the end of the screw. Screw
the actuator screw (3) fully into the actuator nut (32). If the nut and screw are being reused, determined that the
marks placed on the nut and the screw during disassembly are in alignment. If these marks are 180° out of
alignment, remove the screw and rotate it 180°, then reinstall it into the nut. If the marks are in alignment, secure
the screw (3) to the screw housing (13) with the bolt (12).

Check the total assembly end play. Attach a dial indicator or other suitable means of recording the motion
between the nut (32) and the housing bottom (30). Apply a force of 100 to 180 pounds tension and compression
to the clevis (51) and record the total assembly end play. The total assembly end play must not exceed 0.010
inch.

Check the engagement of the pinion with the gear of the screw housing. Apply a tension load of 675 pounds to
725 pounds to the clevis (51). Rotate the pinion by hand in both directions to determine that there is perceptible
backlash of the pinion without binding. If the tolerances have accumulated, causing the pinion to bind or to have
insufficient clearance, recheck the end play of the screw housing and of the pinion. It may be necessary to
decrease the end play of the screw housing or to increase the end play of the pinion within the above tolerances.
Replace the screw assembly and/or the pinion as necessary if the proper engagement of the pinion with the end
play adjustments within the prescribed tolerances cannot be obtained.

NOTE: An actuator assembly having the actuator nut and screw replaced with new parts must be functional tested
prior to the completion of the remaining assembly instructions.

q. Clean the exterior of the actuator assembly.

NOTE: The bolt (43), P/N 99-810024 installed on early actuator assemblies, should be replaced with an NAS1304-
70 bolt, if available.
If the bolt (43), P/N 99-810024 is reused, observe the following precaution to prevent interference between
the bolt (43) and the aircraft structure. Leave only 0.032 to 0.062 inch of thread exposed at the lower end
of the actuator. Leave the greater length of exposed threads at the end holding the brake assembly.

r. Remove the bolt (31) used during the functional testing of the actuator and replace it with bolt (43). Install the
brake assembly in the following order: bolt (43), washer (18), spacer (16), brake half (4), washer (17), brake half
(4), washer (15) and nut (14). Tighten the nut to position the washer (15) against the spacer (16) then continue
tightening to a torque of 50 to 70 inch-pounds.

s. To prevent possible interference with the actuator bearing supports when the actuator is installed in the airplane
and in operation, a minimum dimension of 0.005 inch must be maintained (Refer to Figure 1). A maximum of
0.030 inch of material may be removed from the 115-810024-3 cover (9) and the 99-810051 actuator bottom
housing (30) to obtain the 0.005 inch operating clearance. Apply corrosion preventative per MIL-C-5541 to the
115-810024-3 cover (9) and 99-810051 actuator bottom housing (30) to any reworked surfaces and repaint.

t. Complete the assembly of the brake. Install in the following order: the bolt (6), washer (5), spacer (19), brake
halves (4), spring (20), washer (21) and nut (22). Tighten the nut (22) to position the washer (21) against the
spacer (19). Continue to tighten the nut to a torque of 20 to 25 inch-pounds.

u. Check the effectiveness of the brake assembly. With no load applied to the actuator turn the pinion (27) with a
torque wrench. A minimum of 8 inch-pounds starting torque must be required to rotate the pinion (27), and
require a minimum of 6 inch-pounds running torque. If less than 6 inch-pounds are required to rotate the pinion,
the brake assembly must be replaced with a new brake assembly. Replace the brake halves in matched sets
only.

v. Loosen the bolt (12) and install the cover (2). Tighten the bolt (12).

w. Install the boot (1). Shrink the boot until it fits firmly around the screw housing assembly by applying heat as
uniformly as possible to the boot.

x. Repaint the actuator as required using care not to paint any of the surface contacted by the brake assembly nor
to paint any of the seal (10).

y. Perform a functional test as noted in TESTING AND TROUBLESHOOTING.

z. When the actuator is installed on the airplane, shimmed and aligned with the drag brace, check for a minimum
of .010 inch clearance between the actuator bottom housing and P/N 115-811046 bearing supports when the
actuator is shifted from side to side.

NOSE LANDING GEAR ACTUATORS (99 SERIES)

TESTING AND TROUBLESHOOTING
Each actuator should be functionally tested to assure proper operation (Refer to Figure 1). If the actuator screw and
nut have been reused as a matched set, it is not necessary to perform a functional test to test the actuator assembly.
It is necessary to run all operations on a new actuator nut and screw in order to properly seat the mating thread
surfaces and ensure proper operation of the actuator.

A test fixture is needed during maintenance and functional testing of the nose landing gear actuator.

The Landing Gear Actuator Test Fixture, P/N 115-810021/934, used by Hawker Beechcraft Corporation during the
manufacture and overhaul of the nose landing gear actuator assemblies, meets these requirements. A test fixture,
which will meet the requirements, may be designed and built for this purpose.

a. Operate the actuator by hand to determine that the pinion does not bind. Secure the actuator in a manner to
resist tension and compression loads applied to the yoke (7) at the same points and in much the same manner
as if the actuator were installed in the airplane. Connect a power unit to the pinion shaft. Provide limit switches
for limiting the travel in either direction to prevent bottoming out of the actuator. Operate the actuator at a speed
required to obtain a full extension or retraction in 8 to 9 seconds. The function test of the nose landing gear
actuator includes both compression and tension loads as indicated in the procedures.

b. Apply a tension load of 525 to 575 pounds to the yoke (7). Rotate the pinon in both directions to determine that
there is a minimum of 0.002 inch backlash between the pinion (22) and the screw housing (20). The pinion must
not bind. Remove the tension load.

c. Measure the end play of the actuator assembly. Attach a dial indicator to record the relative motion of the
actuator nut (3) and the housing (14). Alternately apply a tension and compression load of 100 to 180 pounds.
Record the end play as indicated by the dial indicator.

d. Apply a compression load of 150 to 250 pounds to the yoke (7). Run the actuator for a minimum of 5 cycles
through retraction and extension. Allow the actuator to cool after each 5 cycles for a minimum of 5 minutes.

e. Apply a tension load of 450 to 550 pounds. Operate the actuator through a minimum of 3 cycles at a speed to
complete an extension and retraction cycle in 10 to 18 seconds, then change the load to 450 to 550 pounds
compression and operate the actuator through a minimum of 3 more cycles at the same speed. Allow the
actuator to cool for a minimum of 5 minutes after each 3 cycles. The actuator must not bind, squeal or bottom
out when operated through the full travel of the actuator.

f. Apply a compression load of 1,300 to 1,500 pounds. Run the actuator for 3 cycles. The actuator must not squeal,
bind or bottom out. Remove the load.

g. Repeat the end play inspection. The end play must not have increased during functional test. Assembly end
play, measured from nut to housing, may be a maximum of 0.005 inch greater than screw-nut end play.
However, the total assembly end play shall not exceed 0.010 inch.

DISASSEMBLY
The following instructions are for the disassembling of the nose landing gear actuator.

a. Inspect the end play of the actuator screw (1) and the actuator nut (3) (Refer to Figure 2).

1. Loosen or remove the bolt (2), washers (29 and 30) and nut (31) as required to remove the cover (27).
Replace the bolt (2), washers (29 and 30) and nut (31) if removed.

2. Secure the actuator, supporting the actuator and resisting compression and tension forces at the same
points and in much the same manner as if the actuator were mounted in the airplane.

3. Mount a dial indicator to measure the movement of the actuator nut (3) relative to that of the actuator screw
(1). This may be accomplished by clamping a dial indicator fixture to the actuator nut assembly and placing
the dial indicator sensing device against the head of the actuator screw (1).

NOTE: An erroneous reading will be obtained if the dial indicator fixture is attached to the yoke assembly
(7).

4. Apply a force of 100 to 180 pounds tension and compression to the yoke assembly (7). Record the end play
between the nut and the screw.

NOTE: The end play is to be checked at each of three points: the actuator nut fully in and backed off one turn;
the actuator nut extended one half its travel and with the actuator nut extended 10 1/2 inches.

If the end play is acceptable, 0.009 inch or less, the actuator nut and screw may be reused as a matched set
after reconditioning. If the end play exceeds 0.009 inch, the nut and screw must both be replaced with new or
serviceable parts.

b. Apply pressure to compress the spring (6) allowing the removal of the bushings (8 and 9) attaching the yoke
assembly (7) to the actuator nut (3). Remove the yoke and spring.

c. Remove the four bolts (11), washers (32) and nuts (33) securing the cover (10) and the bottom assembly (17)
to the actuator.

d. Partially extend the actuator nut (3) by unscrewing from the actuator screw (1). Force the upper bearing (12)
from the housing by applying pressure on the actuator nut (3). When the bearing is free of the housing, remove
the bolt (2) and the upper cover (10).

e. Force the actuator screw (1) from the screw housing (20) by applying pressure to the actuator nut (3). Remove
the actuator screw (1), the actuator nut (3), the screw housing (10) and the bushing halves (21). If the results of
the end play inspection are satisfactory, 0.009 inch or less, tag and identify the actuator nut and actuator screw
for reuse as a matched set. Also, tag and identify the housing (20) for reuse with the pinion (22) as a matched
set. Remove the plug (4) from the actuator nut (3), remove and discard the packing (5) from the plug.

f. Remove the bottom assembly (17) and shims (16) from the housing (14). Remove and discard the packing (19)
from the bottom assembly.

g. Press the upper bearing (12) off the screw housing (20).

h. Remove and discard the seal (28) from the cover (10).

i. Remove the lower bearing (13) and the vent (15) from the housing (14).

h. Upper end of actuator is sealed.

Inspect and repair the actuator components as follows:

a. Screw Housing (20), P/N 115-820047 or 115-820047-1: Remove and discard any screw housing P/N 115-
820047 and replace with a 115-820047-1 screw housing. Visually inspect for damage or severe wear. The
0.3125 to 0.3140 inch diameter hole may wear to a maximum diameter of 0.3150 inch. Perform a magnetic
particle inspection for cracks per specification MIL-I-6868. If the plating is worn through, strip and cadmium plate
per specification QQ-P-416, Type II, Class 2. Replate only that portion of the screw housing originally plated, do
not plate the gear or any portion of the screw housing that will be enclosed within the housing of the actuator
assembly. If the screw housing must be scrapped, replace the screw housing (20) and the pinion (22) as a
matched set.

b. Pinion (22) P/N 115-810028-1: Visually inspect the pinion (22) for wear or damage. Perform a magnetic particle
inspection for the cracks per specification MIL-I-6868. If the pinion must be scrapped, replace the screw housing
(20) and the pinion (22) as a matched set.

c. Screw (1) P/N 115-820049-1: If the end play inspection results are acceptable for the actuator screw (1) and the
actuator nut (3), 0.009 inch or less, inspect for wear or damage. The 0.3125 to 0.3140 inch hole may wear to a
maximum diameter of 0.3150 inch. Perform a magnetic particle inspection for cracks per specification MIL-I-
6868. Any 115-820049 actuator screw is not to be reused without reworking to the configuration of 115-820049-
1. This rework consists of boring the 0.060 to 0.070 inch diameter grease flow hole to the diameter of 0.115 to
0.125 inch and reidentifying the part as 115-820049-1. Remove all burrs and chips. If the actuator screw is to
be scrapped, replace the actuator screw (1) and the nut (3) as a matched set.

d. Nut (3) P/N 115-820075-7: If the end play inspection of the actuator nut (3) and the actuator screw (1) are
acceptable, 0.009 inch or less, inspect for wear or damage. The 0.600 inch dimension of the slotted hole may
wear to 0.620 inch maximum. The 0.500 to 0.505 inch width of the slotted hole may wear to 0.510 inch. If there
is no damage or severe wear requiring replacement, visually inspect the area of the electron beam weld, using
a 3 to 10 power magnification. If there is evidence of cracks, the nut assembly must be replaced. Do not reuse
an 115-820075 actuator nut assembly without reworking to the configuration of a 115-820075-7. This rework
consists of drilling a 0.12 inch grease flow hole through each side of the nut assembly at a distance of 1.87 to
1.91 inches from the threaded end of the nut assembly. Remove all burrs and chips. The part should then be
reidentified as 115-820075-7. If the plating is scratched or worn through, strip and replate per specification QQ-
C-320 and QQ-P-416. Chrome plate the shaft portion of the nut that was originally chrome plated, the entire
length of the steel tube of the assembly. Cadmium plate the balance of the nut assembly.

NOTE: Do not cadmium plate any of the threaded portion of the nut assembly.

After cadmium plating, the nut should be hydrogen embrittlement relieved at 375°F for three hours.

e. Spring (6) P/N 115-810031: Check the compression load of the spring at 1.20 inch. The load must be 186 to
226 pounds. If the plating is scratched or worn through, re-cadmium plate and hydrogen embrittlement relieve
per QQ-P-416, Type II, Class 2.

CAUTION: The spring must not be flexed after plating prior to hydrogen embrittlement relief.

f. Yoke Assembly (7) P/N 115-820051: Inspect for wear and visual damage, if there is no visible severe wear or
damage, replace the 08DU10 bushings (8) and reuse. If there is evidence of minor physical damage, remove
the bushings, strip the paint and perform a Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection per MIL-I-6866. If the part is not
cracked or damaged, apply corrosion preventative per MIL-C-5541, install new bushings (8) and repaint as
necessary for reuse.

g. Housing (14) P/N 115-810023-1 or 115-810023-3: Remove and discard any housing P/N 115-810023-1.
Replace with a 115-810023-3 housing. Inspect for wear and visual damage. If visual inspections show no severe
wear or damage, reuse. If there is severe wear or visible damage, scrap and replace with a new or serviceable
115-810023-3 housing. If there is evidence of minor damage, strip the paint and perform a Fluorescent
Penetrant Inspection for cracks per MIL-I-6866. If the part has no cracks, apply corrosion preventative per MIL-
C-5541 for 115-810023-3. Repaint as required for reuse.

h. Cover (10) P/N 115-810024-1 or 115-810024-3: Remove any cover P/N 115-810024 or 115-810024-1. Replace
with a 115-810024-3 cover. Inspect for wear or visible damage. If there is no wear or visible damage, the 115-
810024-3 cover (10) may be reused without further action. Any 115-810024 cover must be replaced, with a 115-
810024-3 cover. If there is evidence of possible minor damage, or if there has been any rework, strip the paint,
perform a Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection for cracks per MIL-I-6868. If there is no wear or damage to warrant
replacement, apply corrosion preventative per specification MIL-C-5541 for a 115-810024-3 cover. Repaint as
required for reuse. The -3 cover is made of aluminum for improved service life.

i. Housing Bottom Assembly (17) P/N 115-820050-1 or 115-820050-5: Remove and discard any housing bottom
assembly P/N 115-820050-1. Replace with a 115-820050-5 housing bottom assembly. Inspect for wear or
visible damage. Inspect the bushing (18) for wear. The 1.126 to 1.128 inch internal diameter may wear to 1.129
inch maximum. Do not remove the bushing if there is no visible damage or internal corrosion in the bottom
assembly or if the wear of the bushing is within the above limitation. If there is evidence of minor damage,
internal corrosion, or the bushing exceeds 1.129 inch internal diameter, remove the bushing (18), strip the paint
and perform a Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection for cracks. If there are no cracks, apply corrosion preventative
per MIL-C-5541 for the 115-820050-5 bottom assembly. Install a new bushing (18) and repaint as required for
reuse.

j. Bushing (9) P/N 99-820108 or 105740B-ZZ3390: Inspect the bushing (9) for wear. The 0.3745 to 0.3755 inch
inside diameter may wear to a maximum of 0.3765 inch. The 0.4965 to 0.4980 inch outside diameter may wear
to a minimum of 0.4960 inch. A bushing within the noted tolerance may be reused, otherwise replace with a new
bushing. The 105740B-ZZ3390 bushing may be used as a replacement until the 99-820108 bushing is
available.

k. Vent (15) P/N 99-820107 or AN932-2: Use only a 99-820107 vent on reassembly or rework an AN932-2 plug to
provide the proper venting by drilling a 0.043 to 0.059 inch hole through the central axis of the plug.

l. Visually inspect the following parts for wear or damage. Reuse all parts that show no severe wear or damage.

ASSEMBLY
Refer to CHECK AND REPAIR for parts required for updating of the actuator. Reidentification of the actuator may
only be accomplished after all the listed parts have been installed.

Refer to Figure 2 for parts index. Replace all rejected parts with new or serviceable parts.

a. All integral parts, cavities, openings and threaded areas must be kept free of chips and foreign particles during
and after reassembly.

NOTE: When the use of a lubricant is required during the reassembly of the actuator, use only a grease conforming
to the specification MIL-G-21164 or use Molytex Grease No. 2 (P/N of Texaco Inc. 135 E. 42nd St., New
York, NY).

b. Lubricate the bushing halves (21) and install them on the nut assembly (3). Insert the nut assembly and the
bushing halves into the screw housing (20). Determine that the bushings (21) are free throughout the full travel
of the nut assembly. Remove and lay the bushing halves aside for later installation.

c. Install the packing (5) on the plug (4). Insert the plug into the actuator nut (3).

d. Install new bushings (8) in the yoke (7).

e. Place the spring (6) in the yoke (7) and install the yoke on the actuator nut (3). Apply force to compress the
spring (6) sufficiently to permit the insertion of the bushing (9) securing the yoke assembly to the actuator nut.

f. Be sure the plug (4) is bottomed out in the nut assembly. Fill the actuator nut assembly with grease. Use care
to prevent entrapped air. Set the nut assembly aside for later installation.

g. Pack the open sides of the upper bearing (12) and the lower bearing (13) with grease.

h. Press the upper bearing (12) onto the screw housing (20) with the seal of the bearing away from the gear. Install
the screw housing (20) and upper bearing (12) into the housing (14). Press the bearing until it seats firmly
against the shoulder of the housing.

CAUTION: The lower bearing (13) is a thrust bearing and must be installed correctly to resist thrust.

i. Install the lower bearing (13) onto the screw housing (20) with the thrust side of the bearing (as marked on the
outer bearing race) away from the housing (14).

j. Install the cover (10) and the bottom assembly (17) using sufficient shims (16) between the housing (14) and
the bottom assembly (17) to prevent preloading the bearings when tightening the bolts (11). Tighten the bolts
(11) to a torque of 50 to 70 inch-pounds.

k. Check the end play of the screw housing (20). Adjust the thickness of the shims (16) to obtain an end play of
0.0005 to 0.004 inch.

CAUTION: This adjustment is critical for the proper operation of the actuator. It must be made with the upper
bearing (12) completely in place and prior to the installation of the pinion (22).

Page 6

LANDING GEAR ACTUATOR P/N 115-820046
l. Disassemble the components installed above as necessary for the installation of the pinion (22) and the inner
pinion bearing (23). Be sure to note the quantity of shims (16) required for the adjustment of the end play of the
screw housing.

m. Pack the inner pinion bearing (23) and the outer pinion bearing (24) with grease. Coat the inner surface of the
housing (14) with grease.

n. Install the inner pinion bearing (23) on the pinion (22) with the “VEE” mark on the outer bearing race pointing
away from the pinion gear as shown in the illustration (Refer to Figure 2).

CAUTION: The inner pinion bearing (23) is a thrust bearing and must be installed correctly to resist thrust.

o. Install the pinion (22) in the housing (14) and install the outer pinion bearing (24), the shim (25) and the snap
ring (26). Adjust the laminated peel shim (25) to obtain 0.000 to 0.003 inch end play of the pinion (22). Check
the end play of the pinion (22) by applying 150 pounds of tension to the pinion (22). If the inner pinion bearing
is incorrectly installed, the specified pressure will be sufficient to unseat the bearing causing excessive end play.
The bearing must then be removed, replaced with a new bearing, and installed correctly. The pinion must rotate
freely.

p. Install the screw housing (20) and the upper bearing (12) in the housing (14).

q. Pack the space between the screw housing (20) and the housing (14) with grease. Install the vent (15).

r. Install the lower bearing (13) on the screw housing (20) and into the housing (14). Be sure to install the bearing
with the thrust side (as marked on the outer bearing race) away from the housing (14).

s. Install the packing (19) and the bushing (18) in the bottom assembly (17). Coat the inner surface of the bottom
assembly and the packing with grease.

t. Insert the nut assembly (3) through the bottom assembly (17). Use care not to damage the packing (19).

u. Place the shims (16) over the nut assembly (3). Use the same quantity of shims determined necessary for the
correct end play adjustment of the screw housing (20). Lubricate the bushing halves (21) and install them on
the nut assembly (3). Insert the nut assembly and the bushing halves into the screw housing (20).

v. Install the cover (10) and tighten the bolts (11) to a torque of 50 to 70 inch-pounds.

w. Move the nut assembly (3) fully into the screw housing (20) to the fully retracted position. Insert the screw (1)
into the screw housing (20) and the nut assembly (3). Permit the excess grease to flow out of the upper end of
the screw (1). Install the bolt (2) to secure the screw (1) to the screw housing (20). Install the cover (27). Tighten
the bolt (2).

x. Rotate the pinion (22) by hand. It must rotate freely without binding. Secure the actuator and apply a tension
load of 700 pounds to the yoke (7) to firmly seat the upper bearing (12) against the shoulder of the housing (14).
Check the backlash of the pinion (22) while the tension load is applied to the yoke. There must be some free
movement of the pinion (22). If the pinion binds or there is no backlash, refer to the following steps.

y. Use a feeler gage to measure the gap between the cover (10) and the housing (14). Use this measurement to
determine the number of shims (16) required to fill the gap between the housing and the cover without changing
the adjustment of the bearings (12) and (13). Remove the cover (10) and install a new seal (28). Coat the inner
surface of the cover (10) and the seal (28) with grease. Install the cover (10) using the quantity of shims
determined necessary to fill the gap between the housing the cover. Torque the bolts to a torque of 50 to 70
inch-pounds.

z. Attach a dial indicator or other means of measuring relative motion between the nut (3) and the bottom assembly
(17). Secure the actuator and apply a force of 100 to 180 pounds tension and compression to the yoke (7) and
record the total assembly end play. The total assembly end play must not exceed 0.010 inch. Apply a tension
load of 525 to 575 pounds to the yoke (7). Rotate the pinion in both directions to determine that there is
perceptible backlash of the pinion (22) while the screw housing (10) is under load. If the tolerances have
accumulated, causing the pinion to bind or to have insufficient clearance, recheck the end play of the screw
assembly and the pinion. It may be necessary to reduce the end play of the screw assembly or to increase the
end play of the pinion within the prescribed tolerances. Replace the screw assembly and/or the pinion as
necessary if proper engagement of the pinion cannot be obtained with the end play adjustments within the
prescribed tolerances.

NOTE: An actuator assembly having the actuator nut and screw replaced must be functionally tested prior to
completing the following steps of final assembly.

aa. To prevent possible interference with the actuator bearing supports when the actuator is installed in the airplane
and in operation, a minimum dimension of 0.005 inch as shown in Figure 1 must be maintained. A maximum of
0.030 inch of material may be removed from the 115-810024-3 cover (10) and the 115-820050-5 actuator
housing bottom (17) to obtain the 0.005 inch operating clearance. Apply corrosion preventative per MIL-C-5541
to the 115-810024-3 cover (10) and 115-820050-5 actuator bottom housing (17) to any reworked surfaces and
repaint.

ab. Apply a coating of EC1239B1/2 sealant to seal the upper end of the actuator assembly against the entrance of
water and other contaminates. Cover the sides of the cover (27), the bolt (2) and the end of the screw housing
assembly (20). Apply the sealant to obtain a thickness of 0.09 inch for a distance of 1.2 inches from the end of
the actuator assembly. The end surface of the cover (27) is not to be covered with sealant.

ac. Reidentify the assembly as required. Repaint as necessary to obtain a like-new appearance. Do not repaint the
seal (28) or the nut assembly (3).

ad. Perform a functional test as noted in TESTING AND TROUBLESHOOTING.

NOSE LANDING GEAR ACTUATORS (F90, 100 SERIES AND 200 SERIES)
TESTING AND TROUBLESHOOTING
Each actuator should be functional tested to assure the proper operation of the actuator (Refer to Figure 1). If the
actuator screw and nut have been reused as a matched set, it is not necessary to perform a functional test to proof
test the actuator assembly. It is necessary to run all operations on a new actuator nut assembly and screw assembly
in order to properly seat mating thread surfaces and ensure proper operation of the actuator.

A test fixture is needed during maintenance and functional testing of the nose landing gear actuator. This fixture will
provide the support and the means of operating the actuator. Limit switches must be provided to limit the travel of
the actuator. The test fixture should also provide the means applying the required tension and compression loads
to the actuator assembly. A properly designed fixture may be utilized during the disassembly and assembly of the
actuator assembly for checking end play and for performing proof tests of components during the inspection.

The Landing Gear Actuator Test Fixture, P/N 50-810164/934, used by Hawker Beechcraft Corporation during the
manufacture and overhaul of the nose landing gear actuator assemblies, meets these requirements. A test fixture,
which meets the requirements, may be designed and built for this purpose.

a. Operate the actuator by hand to determine that the pinion does not bind. Secure the actuator in place in such a
manner that tension and compression loads applied to the clevis will not move the actuator housing. Secure the
actuator at the same points and in the same manner as if the actuator were mounted in the airplane.

1. Attach a dial indicator in a manner to measure the relative motion between the nut assembly (9) and the
housing (18).

2. Alternately apply a tension and compression load of 100 to 125 pounds to the clevis (1).

3. Record the end play as indicated by the dial indicator.

b. Connect a power unit to the pinion. Provide limit switches for limiting the travel in either direction to prevent
bottoming out the actuator. Operate the actuator at a speed to obtain a complete extension and retraction cycle
in 10 to 18 seconds. The function test loads to be used are noted in the following procedure.

c. Apply 525 to 575 pounds tension load to the clevis (1). Rotate the pinion in both directions to determine that
there is 0.004 to 0.007 inch backlash between the pinion (15) and the screw assembly (8).

d. Change the load to 175 to 225 pounds compression. Run a minimum of 5 cycles through extension and
retraction. Allow the actuator to cool after each 5 cycles of operation. Measure and record end play between the
actuator nut and screw.

e. Change the load to 450 to 550 pounds tension. Operate the actuator through a minimum of 3 cycles at a speed
to complete an extension and retraction cycle in 10 to 18 seconds, then change the load to 450 to 550 pounds
compression and operate the actuator through a minimum of 3 more cycles at the same speed. Allow the
actuator to cool for a minimum of 5 minutes after 3 cycles. The actuator must not bind, squeal or bottom out
when operated through the full travel of the actuator.

f. Recheck the end play of the actuator assembly as described earlier in Step a. The end play must not have
increased during functional testing. Assembly end play, measured from nut to housing may be a maximum of
0.005 inch greater than nut and screw end play except the total assembly end play shall not exceed 0.010 inch.

DISASSEMBLY
The following instructions are for disassembling of the nose gear actuator.

a. Inspect the end play of the actuator screw assembly (8) and the nut assembly (9) (Refer to Figure 1).

1. Secure the actuator, supporting the actuator and resisting compression and tension forces in much the
same manner as if the actuator were mounted in the airplane.

2. Mount a dial indicator to measure the movement of the actuator screw assembly (8) relative to that of the
nut assembly (9). This may be accomplished by clamping the dial indicator fixture to the actuator nut
assembly and placing the dial indicator sensing device against the head of the screw housing assembly (8).

NOTE: An erroneous reading will be obtained if the dial indicator is attached to the clevis (1).

3. Apply a force of 25 to 50 pounds tension and compression to the clevis (1) and record the resultant end play
between the screw and nut assemblies.

NOTE: The end play is to be checked at each of the three points: the actuator nut fully in and backed off one
turn; the actuator nut one half extended and the actuator nut fully extended and backed off one turn.

If the end play is acceptable, 0.009 inch or less, the actuator nut and screw assemblies may be reused as a
matched set after reconditioning. If the end play exceeds 0.012 inch, the nut and screw housing assemblies
must both be replaced with the new parts or serviceable parts in matched sets.

b. Apply pressure to the clevis (1) and to the retainer (3) to compress the spring (2), permitting removal of the pin
(20). Remove the clevis (1), the spring (2) and the retainer (3).

c. Remove the nut assembly (9). Tag the nut assembly to be reused with the screw assembly (8) as a matched
set if the end play test results were acceptable.

d. Remove the bolts (19), washers (21) and nuts (22). Remove the lower cover (5). Remove and discard the
packing (7). Remove the shims (6).

e. Remove the screw assembly (8), the top cover (4) and the bearing (10). Press the bearing (10) and the cover
(4) from the screw assembly (8). Discard the bearing (10).

f. Remove and discard the seal (11) from the top cover.

g. Remove and discard the snap ring (14). Remove and discard the outer pinion bearing (17). Remove the pinion
(15). Remove and discard the inner pinion bearing (16) from the pinion.

h. Remove and discard the lower bearing (12) from the housing (18). Remove the plug (13) from the housing (18).

The following are parts Hawker Beechcraft Corporation recommends be replaced at each repair event.

g. Screw Assembly (8) P/N 50-820254: If the end play of the screw assembly (8) and the nut assembly (9) is
satisfactory, inspect the screw assembly for wear or damage. The 0.908 to 0.910 inch internal diameter at the
open end of the assembly may wear to a maximum of 0.911 inch. Inspect the gear of the assembly for severely
worn or chipped teeth. The screw assembly should not be reused without performing a proof test of the braze
joints. This may be accomplished by the application of 2250 to 2750 pounds force to the screw. After the
application of the proof load, perform a magnetic inspection for cracks per specification of the proof load,
perform a magnetic inspection for cracks per specification MIL-I-6868. If the screw assembly fails to pass the
proof test or if there are cracks, the screw assembly must be replaced. If replacement is required, the pinion (15)
and the nut assembly (9) must also be replaced as a matched set.

h. Nut Assembly (9) P/N 90-820015-1: If the end play of the nut assembly (9) and the screw assembly (8) is
satisfactory, inspect the nut assembly for wear or damage. The 0.593 to 0.596 inch internal diameter where the
assembly mates with the clevis (1) may wear to a maximum of 0.600 inch. The 0.903 to 0.905 outside diameter
of the nut assembly may wear to a minimum of 0.902 inch. Perform a magnetic inspection for cracks per
specification MIL-I-6868. If the diameter of the nut assembly is less than 0.902 inch or if the chrome plating is
scratched or worn through, strip and replace per Federal Specification QQ-C-320, Type II, Class 2. If the nut
assembly requires replacement, the screw assembly (8) and the pinion (15) must be replaced with a new or
serviceable matched set.

i. Pinion (15) P/N 50-820243: Visually inspect the pinion for wear or damage. Perform a magnetic particle
inspection for cracks per MIL-I-6868. If replacement is required, the pinion (15), the screw assembly (8) and the
nut assembly (9) must be replaced as a matched set.

accomplished after all the listed parts have been installed. Refer to Figure 1 for parts index. Replace all rejected
parts with new or serviceable parts.

a. All integral parts, cavities, openings and threaded areas must be kept free of chips and foreign particles during
and after assembly.

b. Pack the open sides of all bearings with a grease conforming to MIL-G-21164 or with Molytex Grease No. 2.

NOTE: When the use of a lubricant is required during the reassembly of the actuator, use only a grease conforming
to MIL-G-21164 or use Molytex Grease No. 2 (P/N of Texaco Inc., 135 E. 42nd St., New York, N.Y.)
CAUTION: The upper bearing (10) is a thrust bearing and must be installed correctly to resist thrust damage.

c. Install the upper bearing (10) on the screw assembly (8) (Refer to Figure 1). The bearing is correctly installed
when the vendor part number or, if present, the word “thrust” on the bearing, is installed away from the gear of
the screw assembly.

d. Install the screw assembly (8) and the upper bearing (10) in the housing (18). Press the upper bearing (10) firmly
against the shoulder of the housing (18).

e. Install the seal (11) in the top cover (4). Coat the inner surface of the upper cover and the seal with grease.

f. Install the lower bearing (12) and the lower cover (5) using sufficient number of shims (6) to prevent preloading
the bearings when tightening the bolts (19), washers (21) and nuts (22).

g. Check the end play of the screw housing (8). Adjust the shims to obtain an end play of a minimum of 0.0005
inch and a maximum of 0.004 inch.

NOTE: This adjustment is critical for the proper operation of the actuator. It must be made with the upper bearing
(10) completely in place and prior to the installation of the pinion (15).

h. Disassemble as necessary to permit the installation of the inner pinion bearing (16) and the pinion (15).

i. Install the inner pinion bearing (16) on the pinion (15). The bearing is correctly installed when the “X” marked on
the bearing race is away from the gear of the pinion as shown (Refer to Figure 1).

CAUTION: The inner pinion bearing (16) is a thrust bearing and must be correctly installed to resist thrust damage.

j. Coat the inner surfaces of the housing (18) with grease.

k. Install the pinion (15) and the inner pinion bearing (16) into the housing (18). Install the outer pinion bearing (16)
into the housing (18). Install the outer pinion bearing (17) and a new snap ring (14).

to obtain the desired end play of the screw assembly. Insert the nut assembly (9) into the screw assembly (8).
Screw the nut assembly fully into the screw assembly.

s. Install and tighten the bolts (19).

t. Rotate the pinion by hand. It must run freely without binding.

u. Attach a dial indicator or other means of measuring relative motion between the nut assembly (9) and the lower
cover (5). Secure the actuator and apply a force of 100 to 180 pounds tension and compression to the clevis (1)
and record the assembly end play. The total assembly end play must not exceed 0.010 inch. Apply a tension
load of 525 to 575 pounds to the clevis. Rotate the pinion (15) by hand to determine that there is perceptible
backlash while the screw housing is under tension load. If the tolerances have accumulated, causing the pinion
to bind or to have insufficient clearance, recheck the end play of the screw assembly (8) and the pinion (15). It
may be necessary to reduce the end play of the screw assembly or to increase the end play of the pinion within
the prescribed tolerances. Replace the screw assembly and/or the pinion as necessary if the proper
engagement of the pinion with the end play adjustments within the prescribed tolerances cannot be obtained.

v. Perform a functional test as noted in TESTING AND TROUBLESHOOTING.
