Chapter One
1.​ Name and describe the first two characters we meet.
●​ Ralph is tall and lean while Piggy is short and chubby.
2.​ What do the two boys discover in their exploration? To what use do they put it?
●​ They find a conch shell and use it to begin a system of order in which the conch
shell has "power".
3.​ Who is the elected leader?
●​ Ralph
4.​ How is the division of labor arranged?
●​ There is a group of hunters led by Jack. There's a group of shelter craters lead
by Ralph.
5.​ What takes place when Jack, Ralph, and Simon find a piglet caught in the brush?
What effect does the encounter have on lack?
●​ Jack hesitates to kill the pig and ends up not slaughtering it. He promises to
kill the next one they find.
6.​ What differences, besides physical ones, are apparent between Ralph and Piggy?
●​ Ralph is less mature than Piggy and definitely not as smart. Ralph's self esteem
is much higher than Piggy's.

Chapter Two
1.​ What rule does Ralph lay down at the first assembly?
●​ Ralph says that the holder of the conch is the only person permitted to other
than Ralph himself.

●​ The boy tells the group about the "beastie." Ralph says it's just in his dreams
while the rest of the group are alarmed.

●​ Ralph tells the boys they must make a fire with a lot of smoke.

●​ The boys had to elect somebody to keep watch over the burning fire.

●​ The hunters accepted the responsibility of watching the fire.

●​ Piggy reveals that he is a logical, sensible individual during the assembly by
accurately describing the boys' situation and attempting to solve the issue
regarding the "beastie" pragmatically.
Chapter Three
1.​ How successful is Jack in the second hunt?
●​ Jack fails for a second time. He is determined that on his next hunt, he will kill
a pig and bring it back.
2.​ Who is the only one who helps Ralph build the huts?
●​ Simon is the only one to help with the building of the huts even though Ralph
asked the hunters too.
3.​ What conflict arises between Jack and Ralph?
●​ Jack's savage personality and Ralph's civilized personality collide. Ralph
appears to be losing his place as leader to Jack.
4.​ Why is Jack so intent on hunting?
●​ After failing twice, Jack wants to prove he can hunt by killing a pig and
bringing it back for meat.
5.​ Why is Ralph so concerned about the "littluns"?
●​ The "littluns" are becoming more scared and are talking at night.
6.​ What is revealed about Simon in this chapter?
●​ Simon is a caring character. At the same time, he is a loner who needs to get
away from the others at times and connect with nature. He has a special peace
and goodness in his personality.
7.​ What are Golding's implied beliefs about the parliamentary system?
●​ Golding is a firm believer in having laws and also being democratic. He is
against anarchism and shows how easy it is for a society to descend into
anarchy or a totalitarian regime.

Chapter Four
1.​ Describe the activities of the "littluns."
●​ The "littluns" are followers and go along with whomever is the more powerful
leader. Eventually they follow Jack because he has a threat against them. The
kids mostly play, build sand castles, and eat.
2.​ Who knocks over the sand castles?
●​ Roger knocks over the the sand castles.
3.​ What is revealed about Roger by his actions in this chapter? Why does he stop
short of actually hitting Henry with the stones?
●​ Roger is revealed as an aggressive character but he stops short of actually
hitting Henry with stones. Roger is still civilized enough not to.
4.​ How do the hunters prepare for another hunt?
●​ The hunters paint their faces and sharpen their sticks.
5.​ How do the boys react to Piggy? What "role" does he play?
●​ The group doesn't like Piggy because he's fat. They don't respect him or his
ideas. Piggy plays the nerdy fat kid role whom everybody likes to bully.
6.​ Why doesn't the passing ship realize there is someone on the island?
●​ The passing shop doesn't realize there's people on the island because the fire
went out. The hunters had left the fire.
7.​ Describe the hunters' return from the hunt.
●​ The hunters didn't even realize the fire had gone out.
8.​ How do the hunters react to Ralph's angry tirade?
●​ Only Simon feels badly about abandoning the fire and letting it go out. The rest
of the hunters treat it like it's no big deal.
9.​ Describe the confrontation between Jack and Piggy.
●​ Piggy gets angry with Jack and therefore scolds Jack. Jack responds violently
by slapping Piggy and breaking Piggy's glasses.

Chapter Five
1.​ Why does Ralph call the meeting in this chapter?
●​ He is trying to make efforts to bring the group back in line meaning making
everything stable.
2.​ What brings Ralph into closer sympathy with Piggy?
●​ He only did that because of his loss of power.
3.​ For what does Ralph chide the boys?
●​ They never help out.
4.​ What are the reactions of the various boys to the "beast"?
●​ Ralph and Piggy- Refuse to accept existence of it
●​ Simon- The beast could be out there but thinks it's their thoughts
●​ Jack- They should hunt it and kill it
●​ Littluns- Don't acknowledge it at all

●​ He thinks that the beast is the boys. he doesn't articulate what he is thinking
well. the boys think he is crazy and tell him to shut up.
6.​ Cite evidence from this chapter of deterioration of democratic rule.
●​ Fight over the conch, rules breaking, boys doing their own things

Chapter Six
1.​ What is the sign which comes down from the world of grownups?
●​ The sign from the world of grownups is a dead pilot and an explosion in the
sky as his plane is destroyed in an aerial battle. The pilot's body falls to the
island and gets tangled in the trees.
2.​ Why are Sam and Eric so frightened when they are tending the fire?
●​ They see the fallen parachute man. It frightens them because they mistakenly
think its the beast
3.​ How has the significance of the conch changed?
●​ It has lost power and influence as a tool for keeping order. In the beginning
Jack made a greater attempt to follow the rules of the conch but now he
doesn't even care. He ignores that people are even talking.
4.​ Describe the confrontation which takes place between Ralph and Jack.
●​ While Jack and the hunters are killing the pig, Ralph sees a ship and finds out
that their signal fire has gone out without the watch of the hunters.
5.​ What bothers Simon? What does he want to say?
●​ Simon wants to tell everyone that there is no beast. Simon is bothered by how
the other kids believe the story of what Sam'n'Eric were saying.
6.​ Why does Ralph agree to a search of the island?
●​ They know that they must face the beast if they are to have any hopes of being
free from their fears on the island.
7.​ Why does Ralph become angry with Jack and his followers?
●​ Because Ralph so strongly identifies with the civilized part of himself, he
cannot understand how Jack can live so far within his animal side.

Chapter Seven
1.​ What does Simon predict as he talks to Ralph? How does Ralph react?
●​ The pig gets away, but Ralph hit it in the nose before it left and got very excited.
2.​ Describe the hunt which takes place in this chapter.
●​ A chaotic, unorganized, and failure of a hunt

●​ He was proud of himself and excited.

●​ They reenact the hunt with Robert as the pig.

Chapter Eight

●​ Jack, call meeting into place

●​ Refuse to replace him

●​ Simon suggests that they all return to the mountain to search for the beast.

●​ Got moved to the beach.

Chapter Nine
1.​ Where does Simon go after he leaves "the lord of the flies"?
●​ He goes to the body on the mountain.
2.​ Why do Ralph and Piggy decide to attend Jack's feast?
●​ They want to keep some control over what goes on.
3.​ What happens when jack asks Ralph's followers to join him?
●​ After the large meal, Jack extends an invitation to all of Ralph's followers to
join his tribe. Most of them accept, despite Ralph's attempts to dissuade them.
4.​ What tragic mistake is made in the frenzy and excitement of the dance?
●​ Simon gets murdered.
5.​ What has been Simon's function in the novel?
●​ The loner who was always willing to help out.
Chapter Ten
1.​ Who are the only "biguns" who have remained with Ralph?
●​ Sam

●​ He wants to face and confront Jack.

Chapter Eleven
1.​ Why do Ralph and Piggy decide to go to Jack's fort?
●​ They decide to visit Jack to retrieve the glass so they can start a rescue fire and
so that Piggy can see.
2.​ Do you think Piggy is fully aware of how far from "civilized behavior"​
Jack and his followers have degenerated?
●​ Piggy is more aware of the loss of "civilized behavior" by Jack's tribe, more
than Ralph is. Neither of them realizes that they too, are acting uncivilized.
Piggy still thinks he can reason with them.

●​ He strikes after Ralph with a spear.
4.​ Why does Piggy feel he has a right to be heard? What happens to him?
●​ Piggy believes in logic and in rules and he believes that the conch holds a
special authority over everyone, it assembles power. Piggy fell off the cliff.

●​ He twitched just like a pig whenever he died, the pigs twitched while being
slaughtered.
