Room 345 3rd period prep

Course Description, Course Goals & Objectives

Learning a foreign language is an effective way to stimulate and increase cognitive strength. It has the potential to
open doors to discovering new cultures, meeting new people, and approaching problem solving from new
perspectives.

The focus of French 1 class is to provide students with a solid foundation of French vocabulary, grammar, basic
conversational skills and culture. All these elements are important for success in subsequent French classes. The
students will be learning French via a variety of methods. We will develop French proficiency skills in listening,
speaking, reading and writing. Students should make it a habit to practice and review the materials covered in
class on a nightly basis for optimal language acquisition. Our goal for French 1 is for students to have the skills
necessary to communicate effectively at the ACTFL Novice-mid level in the French language by the end of the
school year. https://www.actfl.org/sites/default/files/pdfs/public/ACTFLProficiencyGuidelines2012_FINAL.pdf

Course Expectations and Grading

There are two major components for grading in the World Language Department, Process and Assessment.

1. Process: Class Participation, Homework, Citizenship and Collaboration

Class participation objectives:

 Be attentive, on task and think critically
 Speak in French as much as possible
 Be prepared with necessary materials
 Be on time and present unless there is an excused reason
 Be an active participant in our class community both in and out of school

Homework purpose:

The beginning stages of language acquisition is a process of learning new words and how to apply them.
This requires regular practice and exposure to the new language. As a result, regular homework will be
assigned with the objective of providing exercises to help you use the French presented in the curriculum.

Citizenship and Collaboration expectations:

 Be respectful of people and their property.

 Demonstrate good character by being honest, dependable and give back to the community.
 Work positively and equally with others to achieve a common goal.

2. Assessments: Projects, Tests and Quizzes to assess proficiency in reading, listening, writing, speaking under
the Novice-mid ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines

 Your assessments will reflect what you can do with the subject matter studied in class.
 Assessments may cover one or all four language skill categories.
 Assessments may be individual or in groups.
