values in a logical and purposeful way. At the same time, it respects that everyone in the
community has the same right to pursue their own goals and growth.

Slide 4: who is Jason hickel
1. The Divide: A Brief Guide to Global Inequality and its Solutions (2017)
This book explores why there is such a large gap between rich and poor countries. Hickel argues
that global inequality is not just a natural occurrence but the result of historical exploitation,
colonialism, and unfair economic systems. He also proposes solutions, such as reforming trade,
canceling debt, and creating fairer global systems.
2. Less is More: How Degrowth Will Save the World (2020)
In this book, Hickel challenges the idea that endless economic growth is good for the planet. He
explains how our focus on growth harms the environment and increases inequality. Hickel
suggests “degrowth”—reducing unnecessary consumption and focusing on well-being,
sustainability, and fairness—as a way to build a better future.
Slide 5
Instead of trying to make poor countries more like rich ones, we should focus on reducing the
overconsumption and waste in rich countries. Rich nations often use too many resources,
harming the environment and creating inequality. By “catching down,” rich countries can adopt
simpler, more sustainable lifestyles, making it fairer for everyone and protecting the planet.
Slide 6.
The Sustainable Development Groups want to create a new plan to help improve the world.
Some people suggest sharing the benefits of wealth more equally between rich and poor, which
is helpful but not a complete solution. The bigger problem is that most people in wealthier
countries (70%) agree that overconsumption—buying and using too much—is damaging the
planet and society, and this issue needs to be addressed.

Slide 7.
The experts pushing for change are using terms that make the ideas sound negative and
unappealing. Words like “de-growth,” “zero growth,” or “de-development” sound like setbacks
rather than solutions. A better idea is “steady-state economics,” which focuses on maintaining
balance rather than endless growth. This approach is gaining more attention because it
emphasizes sustainability and long-term stability. However, even though it’s a better term, it still
doesn’t fully explain the positive changes needed in a way that resonates with everyone.
