NATURE AND STRUCTURES OF AN ORGANIZATION

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

In an organization that is seeking to continue aiming and accomplishing desired goals


will never meet it effectively and efficiently without coordinating and overseeing the work
performance of individuals working together in organizations continuously. After planning,
organizing follows. The goals and objectives established during planning will all go to waste
without effective organizing, through the development of a designed structure of roles for
effective performance. It requires linking of decision and communication work units to
coordinate efforts toward the organizational goals and objectives that were set earlier. To
function well, organization structures and their specific roles must be understood by all
members of the organization. Rules and regulation principles must also be put into practice.

NATURE OF ORGANIZATION
Formal Organization – It is a system of well-defined jobs, each bearing a definite measure
of authority, responsibility and accountability
Informal Organization - It is a network of Interpersonal Relationship that arises when people
associate with one another.

DIFFERENTIATION OF THE ORGANIZATION’S INTERNAL ENVIRONMENT

Division of labor involves assigning different tasks to different people in the organization’s
different work units. Breaking down of jobs into simple & repetitive tasks

Advantages:
• Repetition Improves performance
• Time saving
Disadvantages:
• Lack of Specialization
• Not suitable for large scale organization

Specialization is the process in which different individuals and units perform different tasks.

Integration is another process in the organization’s internal environment which involves the
collaboration and coordination of its different work units or work divisions.

Coordination refers to the procedures that connect the work activities of the different work
divisions/units of the firm in order to achieve its overall goal.

To function well, organization structures and their specific roles must be understood
by all members of the organization. A system that outlines how certain activities are directed
in order to achieve the goals of an organization is called an organizational structure. These
activities can include rules, roles, and responsibilities. The organizational structure also
determines how information flows between levels within the company. Having an
organizational structure in place allows companies to remain efficient and focused.

FOUR TYPES OF ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

1. Functional Organization Structure - Under a


functional organization structure, people who do

3. Flat Organizational Structure- A flat


organization has an organizational structure President

4. Matrix Organizational Structure - Matrix
management is an organizational structure in
which each individual report to more than one
supervisor. An employee working for a matrixed
company, for example, may have duties in both
sales and customer service. In a matrix
structure the team members are given more
autonomy and expected to take on more
responsibility for their work.

A company that practices putting an organizational structure makes an operation more


effective and efficient. By putting the organizational structure in place, the firm can decide
salary grades and ranges for each position. Having a structure in place can help
with efficiency and provide clarity for everyone at every level. That also means each and every
department can be more productive, as they are likely to be more focused on energy and time.
