Context: The results for all the Lok Sabha constituencies have been declared by the Election
Commission of India (ECI), with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) securing 240 seats.
Learning Points:
The Lok Sabha, also known as the House of the People, is the lower house of India’s
bicameral Parliament, which includes the Lok Sabha, the Rajya Sabha, and the
President of India.
Members of Parliament (MPs) are elected from states, union territories, or appointed
for their expertise.
Elections occur every 5 years as general elections.
The Constitution of India has adopted universal adult suffrage as the basis for
elections to the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.
Any Indian citizen of/above 18 years of age (lowered from 21 to 18 years by the 61st
Constitutional Amendment Act, 1988) is eligible for casting vote.
The election-related provisions are covered in Articles 324 through 329 of Part XV of
the Constitution.
The Election Commission (EC) of India, established under Article 324, is the sole
organization responsible for conducting elections.
System of Voting:
India follows the First Past the Post system (FPTP) of elections for Lok Sabha and
State Legislative Assemblies.
In the FPTP system, the entire country is divided into small geographical units called
constituencies.
Every constituency elects one representative, where a voter votes for one candidate.
A candidate who gets more votes than other candidates is declared the winner.
The winning candidate need not get a majority, i.e. 50%+1 of the votes.
Some examples of countries that follow the FPTP system include India, UK, Canada
etc.
Voters select a single candidate by marking against the candidate of their choice
through electronic voting machines.
The candidate who secures the highest number of votes is declared elected.
