Chapter 7
A: Contextual Questions:
1.1 What do you think causes a strike to become violent? Can it ever be justified? Discuss. (2)
People that influence each other in a bad way. They get riled up and end up doing things that they
wouldn’t normally do.
1.2 List the three things that causes Lufuno to have regular nightmares. (3)
Lufuno’s mother was very ill from tuberculosis.

1.3 Lufuno is bombarded daily with veiled threats about the strike. Discuss the effect on her psyche. (2)

working notwithstanding the strike.
1.4 Discuss the extended metaphor on p. 45, where Lufuno mentally compares Sindi to a snake.
Discuss whether the comparison is justified. (2)
Sindi falsely accuses Lufuno of spying and wanting to ensnare Mandla. When Chantelle calls Sindi
toxic Lufuno mentally compares her to a venomous mamba seeking out its prey waiting to inject
venom its veins. It is an effective comparison because it illustrates Sindi’s vindictive behaviour
accurately.
1.5 What type of character is Funeka? Round or flat? (1)

The unemployed men in the township are drinking to work up courage to plunder and steal later in
the day when the strike reaches its climax.

2.1 How does the fact that Mandla’s father is the chief influence the theme of ‘Love across boundaries?’
Lufuno and Mandla already has the boundary of being different cultures and from different cities,
now they also have the boundary of being of different class/ status making thing even more difficult
for them. (2)
2.2 What theme can be related to the increasing tenseness that can be felt in the neighbourhood?
The right to strike and the value of tolerance. (1)

C: Language in Context:
Lufuno’s sleep is disturbed most nights by nightmares about Dudu. The radio news reports on the demands
of a 15% wage increase at the On the Rise Bakery strike, called by the Food Manufacturers Union (FMU).
The community in the township is tense about the strike. Sindi again humiliates Lufuno by replacing her
chair in class with a broken one, causing her to fall. Mandla has to serve break-detentions because he
nearly hits a boy in class. Lufuno hears rumours of Mandla having a girlfriend back in the Eastern Cape. She
also learns that his father is a chief and that they are a wealthy family. Mandla stops Lufuno from boarding
a taxi after school.

E: Timeline:
After reading Chapter 7 complete the timeline by listing at least 10 important things to remember:
- Tshilidzi wakes up Lufuno who is screaming in her sleep, she was deraming about Dudu.
- At breakfast they listen to the radio, news about the strike. This makes everyone nervous.
- Lufuno’s mom tells her to come straight home after school.
- The township is very tense, workers are in the street instead of in taxis on their way to work.
- At school ,Mandla is not there.
- Sindi sabotages Lufuno’s chair and she falls. A girl named Funeka helps Lufuno.
- Mandla is held in during break and cannot meet Lufuno to give her back the bracelet.
- Lufuno finds herself at the wrong place, hearing the other boys’ conversation and is scolded by Sindi.
- After school Lufuno misses her taxi and meets Mandla.
