Q2. Figure 2a shows a Link Assembly plotted to a scale of 1:1 in the 3rd Angle
Projection.
(a) Draw Section A-A and Section B-B over the phantom lines in Figure 2b. Use
black/blue ballpen for outline, pencil for center lines and hatching lines.
(b) Make a fully dimensioned detailed drawing of the SHAFT (Item No. 2) in
Figure 2a.

Q3. Blueprint Reading. Study the assembly drawing of the Actuating Cylinder in
Figure 3. Answer the following questions.

Question Answer

1 How is the Piston (Part 4) secured to the Piston Four M6x1x30 Hex Soc
Cover (Part 5)? Cap screws with lock
washer

2 How is the assembly of piston parts secured to By an M20x2.5 slotted

the Piston Rod (Part 6)? nut and cotter pin

3 To mound the cylinder assembly by its two legs,

200 mm
how far apart must the two mounting holes be?

4 What is the outside diameter of the Piston (Part

120 mm
4)?

5 What is the thickness of the Leather Cups (Part

3 mm
10)?

6 What is the maximum travel of the Piston (Part

120 mm
4) in one direction?

7 What is the length of the Cylinder (Part 7)? 175 mm

8 What is the wall thickness of the Cylinder (Part

6 mm
7)??

9 What is the inner diameter of the Packing Gland

25 mm
(Part 3)

10 What is the distance between the inlet and outlet

211 mm
orifices?

11 What is the size of the wench required to tighten

45 mm
the Packing Gland?

Hint: If you have any issue with understanding the working principle of the actuating
cylinder, watch the YouTube video below:

Q4. Figure 4 shows the assembly drawing of a simple Clamping Device.

(a) Download the given part models into your project folder named as TUT8-Q4-
YOUR NAME.
(b) Assemble the part using appropriate mate relationships.
(c) Start a New Drawing using the MA2005 A3 size paper template. Set the
properties for the worksheet to a scale of 1:1 and First Angle Projection.
(d) Layout the views as shown in Figure 4.
(e) Add the Parts List as shown.
(f) Add the balloon as shown.
(g) Show the Workpiece using Phantom Lines.
(h) Edit the views generated to ensure that the drawing complies with
recommended drawing practices in accordance with ISO standards.
Hint: View the video guide in NTULearn for the workflow from Step (c) onwards.

Q5. Figure 5a shows the detailed drawing and parts list for a Pulley and Gear
Assembly.
(a) Completely the following tasks:
• Download the part models (including standard parts) and sub-assembly
into your project folder named as TUT8-Q4-YOUR NAME.
• Start a new Assembly in SolidWorks. Insert the Bracket at the assembly
default origin.
• Assemble the given sub-assembly to the Bracket using the appropriate
mate relationship. Position the sub-assembly in the middle of the slot in
the bracket.
• Fasten the sub-assembly with the Bearing Retainer, the Standard
Hexagonal Nuts (ISO - 4032 - M16 and ISO – 4034 – M10) and the
washer (ISO 7089 – 16). To present the drawing clearly and neatly, it
is recommended to orientate one of the hexagon flats to be parallel to
the Right Plane in the assembly.
(b) For the layout shown in Figure 5b. Identify the errors in drawing practices
as shown on section X-X. Annotate on section X-X with leader and brief
note.
Layout the following views on A2 size paper to a scale of 1:1 in the First
Angle Projection. You may refer to Figure 5b for a sample solution.
• An outside Right Side View of the Assembly.
• Section X-X along cutting plane X-X
• A cutaway isometric view as shown in Figure 5b.
Edit the sectional view to meet recommended drawing practices in
accordance with ISO standards. You may refer to Figure 5c for the sample
solution.
(c) Include Balloon Referencing and a Parts List (a.k.a. Bill of Materials). This
item sequence in the Parts List does not need to follow that in Figure 5c.

Note:
• Gear teeth are not hatched in Sectional View. Thus, the model for the spur
gear is created with the teeth as a separate body so that the hatch can be
deleted easily.

Figure 5b
Note:
The drawings shown in Figure 5b did not follow the drawing practices and conventions
as recommended by ISO standards.
The errors are:
1. Do not hatch the rib if it is cut along the thin side.
2. Do not hatch the gear teeth.
3. Do not hatch the shaft.
4. No threads are shown on the cap screw.
5. The thread assemblies are not shown correctly.
6. The bearings are to be shown conventionally or in section.
