When the clip detector function is correctly set up, the main metal detector sensor switches to a lower sensitivity level
which allows the clips to pass (without causing a detection signal) while also retaining the ability to respond to metal
positioned directly over the clips. Note that (during clip function activation) this metal may be larger than the target
size under normal conditions.
To minimize the time the main detector sensor is operating at the lower sensitivity level, the clip detector function
utilises two timers. DIRECTION OF TRAVEL

Figure 5C
Timer 1 is adjusted for the time it takes for the clips to travel from the clip detector sensor to just before the detection
area of the main sensor. This time period is indicated by the yellow LED (LD6) being illuminated.
Timer 2 is adjusted for the time it takes for the clips to travel across the limits of the detection range of the main metal
detector sensor. During this time period the main sensor is switched to the lower sensitivity range and is indicated by
the red LED (LD7). When the clips have passed beyond the main sensor and are outside of its detection range, the red
LED of timer 2 goes out and the system is switched back to the default high sensitivity level.
Note: If for any reason belt clip detection is not required, the
belt clip sensor connections cannot be left unconnected as
the system will go into fault mode and disable metal
detection.
If the belt clip detector is not going to be installed, follow the
procedure below:- WIRE LINK
1. Isolate the control unit power source and any power
signals being switched by the relay.
2. Remove the belt clip sensor connections from TB4
terminals 1 & 2.
3. Fit an insulated link wire between test-points TP3 & TP14
on the PTL154 circuit board (below the white front
panel).
4. Restore the power & check that the system does not
enter fault mode.

5.2 Setup procedure
WARNING: The belt clip detector function setup procedure is performed on a live and operational
conveyor belt system. Only qualified and competent personnel are allowed to perform the procedure,
which must be done in accordance with national and any additional site/plant specific rules &
regulations and also established good engineering/installation practices.
IMPORTANT: Before commencing the belt clip detector setup, the belt clip and main sensor coil
assemblies must be installed on the conveyor system. The main sensor & clip detector sensor must be
setup & functioning correctly as described in section 4.
The belt clip detector function will only work for conveyor systems that operate with a constant speed.
1. Turn the relay control switch (SW3) to OFF
2. Turn the timer controls timer 1 (VR16) and timer 2 (VR17) fully anti-clockwise.
3. Turn the clip sensitivity control (VR15) fully anti-clockwise.
4. With the conveyor belt running, note whether the yellow and red timer LEDs (LD6 & LD7) flash in sequence
every time the metal clips pass the clip detector sensor face.
If the timer LEDs do not illuminate, slowly adjust the clip sensitivity control clockwise until they do.
If the timer LEDs still do not illuminate when the control is fully clockwise, then the clip sensor needs to be
repositioned closer to the belt clips.
Note that when the timer LEDs are operating the green set-zero LED (LD5) may also turn off and then come on
again. This is normal.
5. At this stage observe that when the metal belt clips pass the clip sensor the timer LEDs flash and then
subsequently as they travel across the main detector sensor the red Detect LED (LD1) will illuminate.
6. Turn the channel 2 sensitivity control (VR11) fully clockwise.
7. Slowly turn the timer 1 control clockwise and the yellow timer 1 LED will stay on for longer periods when the
clips pass the clip sensor. Keep turning timer 1 clockwise until the yellow LED turns off just before the detect
LED illuminates.
8. This is the correct position for the timer 1 control and it should now be noted that when the yellow LED goes
out, the red timer 2 LED will flash just before the red detect LED turns on.
9. If it is found that the detect LED is not coming on, remove the front panel and switch down the red (2) section
of switch SW2. Turn the timer 1 fully anti-clockwise and repeat (7) above.
10. Slowly turn timer 2 control clockwise and note that the timer 2 LED will stay on for longer periods before
turning off and the period that the detect LED illuminates for will become less.
11. Adjust the timer 2 control until the detect LED does not illuminate at all when the belt clips travel across the
main sensor.
12. If the red section of switch SW2 has been operated (in step 9), then return this to the up position.
13. Observe the operation of the system as the belt clips travel across both sensor coils.
If the clip timers operate and the detect LED does not activate as the clips pass the main sensor, then the clip
detector function is correctly calibrated and no further adjustment is necessary.
14. If the detect LED turns on as the clips travel across the main sensor, then slowly turn the channel 2 sensitivity
control anti-clockwise until the detect LED no longer illuminates. Take care not to turn the control too far
since the sensitivity to any tramp metal on or near the clips will be reduced.
15. If the detect LED is still coming on when the channel 2 sensitivity control is fully anti-clockwise, remove the
front panel and advance the clip detector coarse sensitivity control VR3 clockwise by one division.
16. Replace the front panel, turn the channel 2 sensitivity control fully clockwise and repeat from step (14) above.
17. If after these adjustments, the main metal detector sensor continues to detect the metal clips then:
a. A different clip material (stainless steel or non-metallic) may be required.
b. Contact the manufacturer or service department for advice as an alternative sensor arrangement may
be necessary, such as transmit/receive.
18. The belt clip function of the metal detector system should now be operational and calibrated. The relay
control switch can be set to the required position for normal operation.
