skills #1
Farm tools and equipment
BOLO
This foot-long farming tool has been the mainstay of
agricultural life in the Philippine Islands for centuries.
Normally used to cut tall grass, coconuts and bamboo,
the bolo may also be used to harvest small, knee-high
crops like rice, monggo, soybeans, and peanuts.
SHOVEL
A shovel is a tool used to dig as well as to move loose,
granular materials (like dirt, gravel, grain, or snow) from
one spot to another, and. a spade is a tool used for
digging straight-edged holes or trenches, slicing and
lifting sod, and edging flower beds or lawns.
GRAPE HOE
A hoe is an ancient and versatile agricultural and
horticultural hand tool used to shape soil, remove
weeds, clear soil, and harvest root crops. Shaping the soil
includes piling soil around the base of plants (hilling),
digging narrow furrows (drills) and shallow trenches for
planting seeds or bulbs. Weeding with a hoe includes
agitating the surface of the soil or cutting foliage from
roots, and clearing the soil of old roots and crop
residues. Hoes for digging and moving soil are used to
harvest root crops such as potatoes
RAKE
A rake is a type of gardening or landscaping tool with a
handle that ends in a head. You can use a rake for
scooping, scraping, gathering, or leveling materials, such
as soil, mulch, or leaves. Some rakes have flat heads;
others have sharp metal tines that can break up
compacted soil or rocks.
WHEELBARROW
Wheelbarrows are used for a variety of things, such as
moving rock, mulch, or compost to the garden, moving
trees or large shrubs from one spot to another, hauling
bricks, disposing of garden debris, or even for mixing
concrete or fertilizers.
PRUNING SHEARS
Pruners, otherwise known as pruning shears or hand
pruners, are heavy-duty scissors specifically designed to
cut plant stems and hard shrub branches. They’re the
perfect tools to have on hand when gardening, farming,
and flower arranging
PICK MATTOCK
A mattock is useful for digging holes and trenches where
the soil is hard. The flat blade is good for digging hard
soils, while the axe blade is good for cutting roots.
However, if you have never used one before it can take
some getting used to. Useful to use in heavy clay soils for
digging holes and trenches.
TRACTOR
Tractors are used in agriculture, construction, road
building, etc., in the form of bulldozers, scrapers, and
diggers. A notable feature of tractors in many
applications is the power-takeoff accessory, used to
operate stationary or drawn machinery and implements.
SEEDER
A seeder is the perfect tool for planting your garden. A
good seeder will cut a row into the soil for you, sow
and space out seeds and then cover them back up.
Essentially, a seeder will do all of those tasks that can
wreak havoc on your knees and lower back when
you're planting.
HARVESTER
A harvester is an agriculture worker that operates a
combine or forage harvester and other equipment to
harvest crops. As a harvester, your primary job duties
involve operating farm machinery, inspecting crops by
hand, and performing basic maintenance tasks on all
machines.
SPRAYER
A sprayer is a device used to spray a liquid, where
sprayers are commonly used for projection of water,
weed killers, crop performance materials, pest
maintenance chemicals, as well as manufacturing and
production line ingredients.
SICKLE
The sickle is general purpose harvesting hand tool.
It is used for the harvesting of vegetables, cereal crops
and cutting of the grass and other vegetative matters.
Sickle is one of the most common hand tools used for
harvesting of the crops, grass and cutting of other
vegetative matters.
Here are the step-by-step instructions on how to use
farm tools and equipment:
1. Start by familiarizing yourself with the different
farm tools and equipment available.
2. Always read the manufacturer's instructions and
safety guidelines before using any tool or
equipment.
3. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment
(PPE) such as gloves, goggles, and sturdy footwear.
4. Check the condition of the tools and equipment
before each use to ensure they are in good working
order.
5. Select the right tool or equipment for the specific
task you are about to perform.
6. Make sure you have a clear understanding of the
purpose and function of the tool or equipment you
are using.
7. Use the tool or equipment in the manner
recommended by the manufacturer to avoid
accidents or damage.
8. If using power tools, make sure they are connected
to a power source that matches the tool's
requirements.
9. Pay attention to your surroundings and ensure
there is enough space to operate the tool or
equipment safely.
10. When using hand tools, grip them firmly and use
them in a controlled manner to prevent injuries.
11. Follow proper lifting techniques when handling
heavy tools or equipment to avoid strain or injury.
12. Keep cutting edges sharp and clean to maintain
the tool's effectiveness and prevent accidents.
13. Store tools and equipment in a safe and organized
manner when not in use to prevent damage and
accidents.
14. Clean tools and equipment after each use to
prolong their lifespan and ensure optimal
performance.
15. Seek training or guidance from experienced
individuals if you are unfamiliar with how to use a
specific tool or equipment.
Proper Maintaining of Farm Tools and Equipment
The following maintenance practices or precautions are
to be adopted to prolong the life span and effective use
of farm tools.
Tools
Tools should be washed or cleaned after use.
Oil, grease or lubricate movable parts to reduce
friction.
Sharpen tools with blunt edges or blades
regularly .e.g. cutlass
Paint, oil or grease metallic parts to prevent rusting
if they are to be kept for a long time
Store tools in a cool dry place.
Replace worn-out or damaged parts of farm tools.
Check and tighten loose nuts and bolts daily or
periodically.
Remove tools with wooden parts away from the sun
to avoid cracking.
Keep metallic tools away from rain or moist places
to avoid rusting.
Keep tools with wooden handles away from termites
and fire.
Handle tools with care and use them for the right
farm operations.
Perform regular oil changes, tractors and other
machines also need regular oil changes to keep
running optimally, so be sure to keep up a regular
schedule of oil changes for all your farm equipment
Equipment
1. KEEP ALL DOCUMENTS ORGANIZED
keeping any records and documents — including
receipts, owner's manuals, dealership information,
warranties and service records
2. PERFORM REGULAR OIL CHANGES
Tractors and other machines also need regular oil
changes to keep running optimally, so be sure to keep
up a regular schedule of oil changes for all your farm
equipment. Be sure to check any oil filters and replace
them as recommended by the manufacturer
3. LUBRICATE MOVING PARTS
Farm machinery is complex, with many moving parts.
Keep your equipment in good working order by
lubricating all moving parts regularly. The frequency
may depend on your local climate and the
manufacturer's recommendations.
4. CHECK ALL HITCHES AND TIRES
Regularly inspect trailer hitches and the couplings on all
trailers and equipment that you pull, as well as on any
tractors, trucks or ATVs that you use to pull the
equipment. Ensure these parts are working properly and
can securely connect. Clean off any excess dirt or rust, if
possible.
5. INSPECT FOR DAMAGE
Farm machinery handles a lot and can easily be
damaged from regular use. After every use, or at least
before storing and at regular intervals, inspect your
equipment for any signs of damage. Loose pieces,
strange noises and other telltale signs of damage
indicate that maintenance may be required.
E. Developing Guide Questions:
