Hackathon Round 1 Guidelines

Welcome to VES-Hack-IT 2025! 🚀


Please carefully read and follow the rules outlined below to ensure a smooth and fair
competition:

1. Problem Statement Release

●​ The problem statements will be revealed tonight 14th January 11:59 PM.
●​ Important: Participants are not advised to work on the problem statement before
allocation.

2. Preference Form Submission

●​ The Preference Form will be released on 20th January 2025.


●​ Teams must fill out the form to indicate their preferred problem statements.

3. Problem Statement Allocation

●​ Problem statements will be allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis on 21st


January 2025.
●​ Note: Each problem statement has a fixed number of teams allowed, so submit your
preferences promptly!

4. Work on the Solution

●​ Teams can begin working on their solution only after the final allocation of the problem
statement.
●​ Please adhere to this timeline to ensure fair competition for all.
5. PPT Submission Guidelines

●​ The PPT Submission Window is from 21st January to 25th January 2025.
●​ All submissions must adhere to the specified PPT format, which will be shared on 21st
January 2025.

6. Evaluation Criteria

●​ The PPT will be evaluated based on innovation, practicality, and feasibility of the
proposed solution.

General Notes

●​ Teams are encouraged to focus on creativity, innovation, and practicality in their


solutions.
●​ Keep checking the WhatsApp group for updates and announcements.

Note for Participants

1.​ The examples provided in the problem statement are for reference purposes only
and are intended to help participants understand the statement better.
2.​ Participants are not required to use any specific example cases, hardware,
software, or tools mentioned in the problem statement.
3.​ Each solution must, however, satisfy the core expectations outlined in the
problem statement.
4.​ Participants are encouraged to use their creativity and innovation to design their
solutions.

Mental Health

SW-01. Game for Mentally Challenged

Problem Definition:​
Many individuals with mental challenges—spanning kids, adults, and the elderly—face
difficulties in cognitive, social, and emotional development. Existing games often fail to cater to
their unique needs, leaving them with limited avenues for growth and engagement.

Example

Maya is a special education teacher working with children who have cognitive challenges. She
notices her student Arjun struggling with attention and motor skills during regular activities.
Maya introduces him to "MindPlay," a game designed to improve cognitive and motor abilities.

In the game, Arjun matches colors and shapes, with tactile feedback from a connected device.
Each level adapts to his ability, encouraging him without overwhelming him. Over time, Maya
tracks Arjun’s progress through the game’s dashboard and sees significant improvement in his
focus and confidence. Even Arjun’s grandparents, who have mild dementia, enjoy playing the
simplified version of the game, making it a bonding activity for the family.

Solution Expectations:

●​ Design an inclusive and engaging game tailored to different mental abilities and age
groups.
●​ Promote cognitive development, emotional well-being, social interaction, and motor
skills.
●​ Track user progress and provide motivational rewards or feedback to encourage
continued engagement.
Digital Literacy

SW-02. Digital Literacy App

Problem Definition:​
In a digital-first world, underserved communities, older populations, and rural areas struggle
with digital literacy, limiting access to education, employment, healthcare, and social inclusion.
This gap in digital skills creates barriers to opportunities and equitable participation in society.

Example:

Ramesh, a farmer in a rural village, struggles with filling online forms to apply for government
subsidies. His daughter, Anjali, introduces him to the "DigiBridge" app, which has tutorials in
regional languages.

The app teaches Ramesh to navigate a smartphone, open an email account, and complete
online forms through simulated exercises. With the app’s voice guidance feature, Ramesh
practices multiple times before successfully submitting his subsidy application. Soon, he’s
helping others in the village learn basic digital skills, spreading the impact of the app within the
community.

Solution Expectations:

●​ Create a user-friendly digital literacy app for teaching essential digital skills.
●​ Provide accessible and inclusive tools to enhance digital understanding.
●​ Offer simulated environments for hands-on practice of digital tasks (e.g., filling online
forms).
Renewable Energy

SW-03. Renewable Energy Crowdfunding Platform

Problem Definition:​
The adoption of renewable energy projects is often hindered by funding challenges and lack of
community involvement. Investors and communities need a platform to connect, fund, and
benefit from green initiatives like solar and wind energy projects.

Example:

Deepak, an entrepreneur in a small town, dreams of installing a solar power grid for his
community but lacks funding. He registers his project on "GreenFund Connect," a renewable
energy crowdfunding platform.

Investors like Priya, who are keen on supporting green initiatives, discover Deepak’s project
through the app. They can see detailed metrics on how the project will reduce carbon emissions
and benefit the community. With contributions from multiple investors, Deepak raises enough
funds to start the project, bringing sustainable energy to the town and inspiring nearby
communities to follow suit.

Solution Expectations:

●​ Develop a platform to enable shared funding of renewable energy projects.


●​ Connect investors with communities for solar, wind, or other green initiatives.
●​ Encourage community involvement in sustainable energy adoption.
Climate Change

SW-04. Climate Change Education App

Problem Definition:​
Climate change is a critical global issue, but its complex science and impacts are often hard to
grasp, especially for youth. A lack of accessible educational resources prevents individuals from
understanding the urgency of action and adopting sustainable habits.

Example:

Ayaan, a high school student, is curious about climate change but finds scientific articles too
complex. His teacher recommends "EcoEdu," an app that simplifies climate science using
games and videos.

Ayaan learns about carbon footprints through an interactive quiz, while the app suggests small,
actionable changes like switching to reusable bottles. Over time, Ayaan earns badges for
completing challenges like planting a tree or reducing energy consumption. He shares his
progress with friends, sparking a sustainability movement in his school.

Solution Expectations:

●​ Create an interactive and engaging platform for climate change education.

SW-05. Food Waste Reduction Platform

Problem Definition:​
Food waste is a significant issue, with surplus food from restaurants, grocery stores, and
households often discarded while shelters and charities face food shortages. This results in both
environmental harm and missed opportunities to support communities.

Example :

Maria runs a bakery and often has leftover bread at the end of the day. She signs up for
"FoodShare Network," which connects her with local shelters in need.

Through the app, Maria schedules a daily pickup, ensuring surplus bread goes to the shelter
instead of being wasted. The shelter manager, Ravi, uses the app to track incoming donations,
plan meals, and reduce costs. Over time, this partnership significantly reduces food waste in the
community and helps feed more people in need.

Solution Expectations:

●​ Build a platform to connect surplus food sources with shelters and charities.
●​ Enable efficient and timely food redistribution to reduce waste.

Smart Parking

SW-06. Smart Parking App

Problem Definition:​
Finding authorized parking spaces near a desired location is often a time-consuming and
frustrating process, contributing to traffic congestion and wasted time.

Example:

Sana is running late for a meeting in a busy city. She opens the "ParkSmart" app to find an
authorized parking spot nearby.

The app shows real-time availability, helping her reserve a spot just 200 meters from her
destination. It even provides navigation assistance to reach the parking space quickly. After
parking, Sana pays seamlessly through the app, avoiding any hassles with cash or tickets. This
convenience saves her time and reduces stress, making her day more productive.

Solution Expectations:

●​ Develop an app to identify nearby authorized parking spaces.

Hardware Track
Healthcare
HW-01 : Smart Fall Detection System for the Elderly
Falls among the elderly are a leading cause of injury and death, often going
undetechatcted for critical periods, which increases the risk of severe health
complications. The need for a reliable and timely fall detection system is
essential to improve their safety and well-being. Develop a hardware-based fall
detection system that uses sensors to detect falls in real-time, providing
immediate alerts to caregivers or medical personnel.

HW-02 : Smart Pill Dispenser for Alzheimer’s and Dementia Patients


Alzheimer's and dementia patients often struggle with medication adherence,
leading to missed doses or overdoses, which can worsen their condition and
compromise their health. Ensuring timely and accurate medication dispensing is
crucial for their well-being. Develop a device that automates and ensures the
timely and accurate dispensing of medication for Alzheimer’s and dementia
patients.

Animal husbandry & Agriculture


HW-03 : Precision Farming System for Enhanced Crop Management
Traditional farming methods often result in inefficient resource usage, reduced
crop yield, and negative environmental impacts. There is a need for a more
precise approach to farming that helps optimize resource use while maximizing
crop productivity and sustainability. Design a hardware device that monitors key
agricultural parameters such as soil moisture, temperature, humidity, and
nutrient levels. The device should provide real-time data and actionable insights
to farmers, enabling them to optimize irrigation, fertilization, and other farming
practices, ultimately improving crop yield and reducing environmental impact.
HW-04 : Automated Animal Species Detection and Monitoring System
Wildlife monitoring and conservation efforts face challenges in accurately
identifying and classifying animal species in real-time, especially in diverse and
often unpredictable environmental conditions. Accurate detection is critical for
informed decision-making and effective biodiversity preservation. Develop a
hardware device that can identify and classify

animal species in real-time using advanced sensors and processing technology.


The system should be capable of operating in various environmental conditions,
providing reliable data to support wildlife monitoring, conservation initiatives, and
biodiversity studies.

Industry 4.0 and IoT

HW-05 : Smart Writing Pen and Pad for Children with Learning Disabilities
Children with learning disabilities often face challenges in developing writing
skills, impacting their academic progress and self-confidence. Develop a tool to
assist and enhance their writing abilities through an engaging and supportive
experience.

HW-06 : Enhanced Ham Radio System for Improved Communication and


Accessibility

Radio communication offers critical support in emergencies and fosters


community engagement, but its accessibility and usability remain challenging for
new users. Develop a solution to simplify and enhance Ham Radio
communication for diverse scenarios.
HW-07 : Reduction of Air Quality Index (AQI) Through Efficient Tracking,
Monitoring, and Implementation of Solutions

Air pollution poses a severe threat to human health, environmental balance, and
overall quality of life. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is a measure that indicates the
level of air pollution in a specific area. High AQI levels can cause respiratory
illnesses, cardiovascular diseases, and long-term environmental damage. This
problem statement aims to design and implement an innovative hardware
solution to effectively track, monitor, and mitigate air pollution in real time,
thereby reducing the AQI and improving public health and environmental
conditions.

Disaster Management & Renewable Energy

HW-08 : Electric vehicle battery management device


Electric vehicles rely heavily on efficient battery management for optimal
performance, safety, and longevity. Develop a system that accurately monitors
and optimizes battery usage, ensuring the vehicle operates safely and efficiently
while prolonging battery life under various driving conditions.

HW-09 : Railway track crack detection & monitoring


Railway tracks are vital for safe and efficient transportation, but cracks and
defects can lead to accidents and service disruptions. Develop a system to
detect and monitor cracks in railway tracks, providing real-time data to ensure
timely maintenance and prevent potential hazards.
Robotics & Engineering
HW-10 : Maze solving Micro-mouse
A maze-solving system, similar to a micromouse, can be utilized in industries for
optimizing delivery routes within warehouses or distribution centers. By quickly
navigating complex layouts, the system will enhance operational efficiency,
reduce delivery times, and improve overall productivity in logistics operations.

HW-11 : Coin sorting system for temples


Temples often receive large volumes of coins as offerings, and manually sorting
them can be time-consuming and inefficient. Develop a coin sorting system that
automates the process, streamlining the collection, sorting, and storage of coins,
ensuring faster and more accurate management of temple donations.

HW-12 : Robotic Inspection System for Hazardous Environments


This project focuses on developing a robotic system designed to inspect
hazardous environments, such as chemical plants, mines, or power stations,
where human presence is dangerous. The robot is equipped with sensors and
cameras to detect environmental conditions like gas leaks, temperature
fluctuations, or structural damage. The system autonomously navigates
through the environment, capturing data and transmitting it to a remote control
station. Operators can monitor real-time video feeds and sensor data, allowing
for prompt identification of issues such as gas leaks, fire hazards, or
equipment malfunctions. The robot can also be equipped with specialized
tools for basic repairs or maintenance, reducing the need for human workers
to enter high-risk areas.
