Science 4 - Q2-LP#5

The lesson plan focuses on teaching students about the brain's functions, its disorders, and the importance of body organ care. Activities include group discussions, hands-on experiments, and games to engage students in understanding how the brain responds to stimuli. The plan also includes evaluation methods to assess students' understanding of brain functions and related diseases.

Quarter 2-Lesson Plan-Science IV

Competency: Communicate that the major organs work together to make the body function properly (S4LT-IIa-b-2)
I. Objective/ s A. Identify the distinct functions of the brain and how it works.
B. Explain the functions of the brain and the diseases and disorders of the brain.
C. Active participation on the group activity.
D. Practice the proper care of the body organs.
II. Subject Brain
Matter
• Teachers Guide pages 93-95,
• Learners Material pages 92-94,
• chart of important concepts; diagram/illustrations showing the common brain disorders/power point presentation
• Ruler, pencil, stone, or any object that can be easily grasps, Calamansi, guava leaves, perfume/cologne, or any
material that has smell, handkerchief for blindfolding
• Video clip
• Picture of a brain
• puzzle/s
• Pictures of diseases related to brain
III.Procedure
Engage
Start the lesson by asking the questions and draw responses from pupils.

• What will you do if an angry dog bark at you?

(I will run fast. I will stay calm. I will shout)

• Why do you immediately remove your hand if you touched a hot object?
(Because I need to protect myself, I don’t like to get hurt)

• What could be your possible reaction when you hear rock music?
(Dance, sing, snap my fingers, clap)

• What makes you cry?

Answers may vary (When I am hurt, when I watch sad movies)

Write responses on the board.

Explore 1. Setting norms to follow during the activity.
2. Group the pupils into 3.
3. Instruct the pupils to work on the activity “What Makes Us Respond to Stimuli?”
4. Provide each group of all the materials needed.
5. Let each group answer all the questions in their assigned activity to be shared during
discussion.
Group 1
What to do:
 Look for a partner.
 Ask your partner to drop an object while you will catch it immediately before it reaches
the floor. (take turns for 3 times)
 Notice your observations.

Questions:
1. What is the reaction of your partner when you dropped an object? What were
your observations?
2. How fast did your partner catch the object?
3. What made your partner respond to your action of dropping the object?
4. What is the function of the brain?

Group 2
What to do:
1. Get flashcards from the teacher.
2. Group leader flash the words and let the members read the words.
3. List down the words they remember.
Questions:
1. How many words did each member remembered?
2. What is the function of the brain?
3. What you need:
Calamansi, guava leaves, perfume/cologne, or any material that has smell,
handkerchief for blindfolding, Ruler, pencil, stone, or any object that can be easily
grasps

Group 3
What to do:
1. Ask one member from the group to be blindfolded.
2. Bring an object near his/her nose.
3. Let him/her guess what the object is.
4. Bring out a box which contains different objects.
5. Have another member of the group to be blindfolded.
6. Let him/her touch the objects and guess what they are.
Questions:
1. What gives him/her the idea of the objects?
2. What is the function of the brain?

A. Allow the learners to share their answers and results of the activity. Ask them.
Explain  “How do you feel about the activity?

 What is the reaction of your partner when you dropped an object? What were your
observations?
She/he responded immediately. She/he catch the different items. Most of the items
fell on the floor)
 How fast did your partner catch the object?
 What made your partner respond to your action of dropping the object?
(He responded to an action. He wanted to catch the object?
 What is the function of the brain?
(It coordinates muscular actions. And it controls the voluntary activities of the body
like decision making.)
 How many words did you remember?
(answers may vary depending on the number of words written)
 What is the function of the brain?
(It controls the voluntary activities of the body like thinking, memorizing details and
decision making.)
 When your classmate touched the object, what gives him the idea about the object?
(After touching the object, the brain tells what the object is.)
 What is the function of the brain?
(It controls the voluntary activities of the body like thinking, and decision making.)
B. Discuss the functions of the brain and the diseases and disorders of the brain. Show
an illustration of a brain.
The human brain is a highly complex organ. It is found in
the head and is protected by the skull, soft tissues called
meninges and a cushion of fluid. It weighs about 1.5
kilograms and contains billions of neurons.

Functions of the Brain:

1. It controls the voluntary activities of the body like thinking, solving problems, and
memorizing details and decision making.
2. It controls the muscle movement of our body like walking and writing.
3. It coordinates muscular actions.
4. It is responsible for man’s ability to learn habits and develop skills.
5. It helps maintain a person’s sense of balance.
6. It connects the brain to the spinal cord.
7. It controls the involuntary muscles of the body and coordinates functions like beating
of the heart and breathing.
Its main function of the brain is to process information it receives and to send instructions to
the different parts of the body.

Brain Disorders:
1. Epilepsy. This is a disorder due to irregular electrical signals in the brain. This
results to unsteady or trembling of the body (seizures) and loss of consciousness.
This disorder is due to chemical poisoning and head disturbance.
2. Parkinson’s Disease. It is characterized by shaking, trembles and rigidity of the
muscles in the face.
3. Stroke. It occurs when there is a blood clot or broken blood vessels going to the
brain. This can lead to temporary or permanent disability of the muscles to move
some parts of the body.
4. Migraine. It is an intense pain in the head caused by stress, fatigue and
sometimes hunger.
Elaborate Do a brain game, solving picture puzzle by group. The first group to post their solved puzzle
will be declared as winner.
Evaluation Evaluate A. Read each statement. Put a check mark on the blank if it is a function of the brain.
____1. It controls the voluntary activities of the body like thinking, solving problems, and
memorizing details and decision making.
_____2. It does not control the muscle movement of our body like walking and writing.
_____3. It coordinates muscular actions.
_____4. It helps maintain a person’s sense of balance.
_____5. It controls the involuntary muscles of the body and coordinates functions like beating
of the heart and breathing.
B. Answer the following questions:
1. What are the diseases related to the brain?
2. What causes migraine?
3. What is the condition of a person who suffered from severe stroke?
Assignment Color and familiarize the parts of the brain and their functions.
