MODULA S.p.A.
Modula S.p.A. is the company of System Group specialized in VLMs with two independent
manufacturing facilities in Salvaterra di Casalgrande, RE (Italy) and Lewiston, ME (USA). All business
processes of Modula® are governed by procedures that adhere to several international standards such
as ISO 9001:2008 for Quality Management Systems, ISO 14001:2004 for Environment protection and
OHSAS 18001:2007 for Safety and Health in work environments.
The MODULA LIFT® VLM is available in various product types that differ in size, capacity, load unit
and optional accessories in order to better meet your needs.
MODULA® LIFT – Standard features for all models
Modula® Lift sets the market standard in terms of efficiency, quality, ergonomic and safety. All the
units come from the factory with following integrated features:
5
Lift OS
Lift OS is a basic part of a multi-layer SW, comes with the
unit’s console and allows the operator or a HOST WMS
System to call by tray number. In addition to that, Lift OS
also allows the user to:
Perform the Unit parameters modification;
Manage the alarms diagnosis and the unit recovery;
Run the machine in manual mode and semi-
automated mode;
Furthermore, the Lift OS software automatically tracks a tray’s
usage and frequency so that the most frequently accessed
trays are stored in locations closest to the picking bay area to
ensure quick access and to minimize picking times.
Safety devices
All MODULA® VLM units come standardly equipped with
personal and products protection:
- Anti-intrusion photocell barriers to guarantee
7
maximum operator safety as trays move in and out
of the picking bay area.
- Emergency stop button, located on the CoPilot®
operator console/HMI.
- Automatic machine diagnostics on machine Start-
up.
- Front and rear tray stops hold trays securely in
place at all times.
Certifications
All MODULA® VLM units are TUV certified. The TÜV GS
certificate acknowledges the product safety standards,
which are above the minimum reliability requirements
provided for by Law.
The German GS mark is the acronym for Geprüfte
Sicherheit or 'tested safety', and is granted when the
product passes specific tests conducted by a duly
authorised independent third party.
WMS Software
Modula WMS software is a warehouse management
package ideal for automated storage equipment, such as
MODULA VLM’s as well as with conventional storage
methods (manual areas with shelving).
Modula WMS software is able to be used as the perfect
completion and addition to MODULA® VLM’s for additional
management or as stand-alone software tool for your
warehouse.
The WMS Software is available in various packages that
differ in functionalities in order to better meet your needs.

materials stored on the tray.
Using the dual tray delivery level multiple trays can be
presented simultaneously, allowing for an increase in
productivity and continuous picking operations The VLM
retrieves and stages the next requested tray at the second
delivery level, while the operator is picking from the first tray
at the opposite delivery level. Once the first tray is complete,
the second tray is delivered allowing picking to begin, while
the VLM returns the first tray.

Software Architecture
The architecture is based on a PC (or server) with the SQL database installed on the Modula master, e.g. the
main program that allows to manage the warehouse and all the communication interfaces between the
database and the host system and the machines and that also provides the configurable automatic backup.
The PC is provided with two network cards, one dedicated to the Modula sub network and one connected
with the enterprise network. It is possible to install the software on up to two (2) clients belonging to the
local network. Additional licenses are available in group of three (3) as option.
Available Modules
WMS BASE
The WMS BASE PLUS module adds two important software functionalities in addition to
the WMS BASE:
The WMS STANDARD software module includes functionality designed to make the Modula® VLM units as
efficient as possible.
Main features of the WMS STANDARD software module include:
21
Dynamic item to compartment allocation management.
Dynamic batching and item serial number management.
FIFO and expiration date management.
It also provides warehouse statistical analysis tools as well as print report
customisation.
The WMS – STANDARD software module adds the following features and functionalities to the WMS – BASE
software module:
For clients / users already having a “WMS” type of software in place, the WMS DRIVER
software module and/or the MODULA® LINK allows the existing “WMS” to communicate to
and directly drive one or more Modula® LIFT units, with no need to develop direct
communication protocols with the machines.
With the WMS DRIVER, users/operators will be able to still utilize the Modula ® LIFT CoPilot®
operator console (HMI) for the required picking and replenishment activities as the
information is clearly shown on the screen. MODULA® LINK it is possible to control the unit
with the PC during the loading/unloading operations and picking confirmation, in place of
the Operator Console CoPilot®.
By purchasing the WMS DRIVER or the MODULA LINK, the customer is provided with the
communication interface to perform an automatic data exchange.
Supplementary Software Modules Available for WMS STANDARD
Besides the WMS Standard it is possible to add the following modules and increase both WMS features
and warehouse’s potential.
22
Advanced Item Management Module
The Advanced Item Picking Module extends the movement management features with the following
features:
Packing list management.
Assembly kit management.
Batch picking management, as well as the use of an optional of a remote / external LED pick-to-light
displays.
Transit material management (boxes, totes, etc.).
This module allows to create and manage the manual areas of the warehouse:
Manual warehouse management with a user friendly graphical tool
Picking management on manual areas
Material distribution between different areas based on moved quantities
Material transfer between areas based on minimum stock values defined per each area.
Incoming area management
RF Module
This module is in addition to the Manual Warehouse Management, as it allows to use RF terminals to
manage manual areas. Modula does not provide any RF Terminal, but guarantees the correct
integration.
Allows interfacing with the SAP®R3 WM module by means of IDOC exchange via FTP.
Remote Assistance Module
The purpose is to establish a protected connection between Modula network and that of the customer
via the Internet for the after sales service and the software upgrade.
To establish a protected connection between the networks, the VPN (Virtual Private Network)
connection is used, which allows two networks to be connected via the Internet using encrypted data.
This technology allows the connection between the networks of Modula and Customer.
In this case, the customer contacts Modula in order to activate the connection for starting a program
on its terminal.
This type of remote assistance can be installed without physically changing the company network. The
only requirement is that the PC on which the remote assistance has to be activated is connected to the
Internet.
Modula cannot activate the remote assistance if the customer's PC is not connected to their remote
assistance site and the operator has not given his explicit consent.

If connected to a company network data backup can be performed by the server through the network. If
there is no network a local backup unit is required. We suggest a 256 MB optic magnetic disk unit. Data
backup is obligatory.
NOTE:
1. Minimum requirements are calibrated considering only use of SQL EXPRESS 2012 and Modula WMS
2. All tests were performed according to the specifications listed above, any implementations that deviate from these
prerequisites (Installation on virtual machines, thin client systems, etc.) must be notified in time for evaluation.
3. In case there are Modula VLM of previous generations contact our customer care software for an assessment of potential
solutions for the network infrastructure.
4. In case of virtualization of MAINMODULA + SQL EXPRESS reserve 2 processor for the virtual machine.
5. WMS Database Backup is mandatory, Modula WMS has a native tool to back up the database (file .BAK creation). When
connected to the corporate network data backup can be done remotely on the server, otherwise you need an external backup
disk.
6. Use of UPS system is mandatory to prevent any hardware issue in case of power supply failure.
7. to avoid conflicts during database installation, PC \ SERVER hostname and Windows user name must be different.
8. If used, firewall or antivirus exceptions must be properly configured to allow the use of the following protocols / ports: ICMP,
