What is Scientific Notation
Scientific notation is way of expressing very large and very small numbers.
It consists of a number that is greater than or equal to one but less than ten, multiplied by a
power of ten. It is easier to compare numbers when they are written in scientific notation.

The numbers above have been written in scientific notation. A large number is
represented by a positive power. A small number is represented by a negative power.

Examples
Write the following numbers using scientific notation:

Examples
Convert the following into standard notation:

Operations in Scientific Notation
Adding and Subtracting 3 4
5.36 × 10 + 2.68 × 10
When adding and subtracting 3 3
numbers in scientific notation, 5.36 × 10 + 26.8 × 10
adjust the numbers so that
3
both powers of 10 are the
same. Then add/subtract the
(5.36 + 26.8) × 10
numbers. 3
= 32.16 × 10
4
= 3.216 × 10
Operations in Scientific Notation
Multiplying 3 5
(2.5 × 10 ) × (5 × 10 )
When multiplying numbers in 3 5
scientific notation, multiply
the numbers and add the
(2.5 × 5) × 10 × 10
powers of 10. Adjust into 8
scientific notation if required. = 12.5 × 10
9
= 1.25 × 10
Operations in Scientific Notation
Dividing 8 5
3.5 × 10 ÷ 7 × 10
When dividing numbers in 8
scientific notation, divide the 3.5 × 10
numbers and subtract the
5
powers of 10. Adjust into
scientific notation if required. 7 × 10
3
= 0.5 × 10
2
= 5 × 10
