How to Use These Books

The Mini Tafseer Book Series is designed to teach children the
Tafseer (exegesis) of all the suwaar (chapters) in the 30th Part
of the Qur'aan. Each book in this 38 book series covers a
different surah. The books feature:

• Special facts about the surah

• Arabic text of the surah
• English transliteration (to assist non-Arabic speakers)
• English translation
• Simplified Tafseer
• Illustrations/Coloring pages (no animals/humans)
• Highlighted Arabic vocabulary
• Sahih Ahadith
• One sentence summary of what the surah is about
• Review section
• Notes on the text (additional facts and information)

Teaching Tips:

If your younger child has trouble going through the whole

book in one sitting, or does not retain all of the information
taught, then just focus on the Tafseer pages first (i.e. those that
explain the verses of the surah) and save the additional
information contained in the Quick Facts, What's Special,
Asbaab An-Noozool, and Vocabulary sections* for later when
your child has mastered the Tafseer.

For older or advanced students who need more of a challenge,

you can take time to go through all sections and discuss the
lesson notes for that section (located at the end of the text).
This will make lessons more challenging and provide a deeper
understanding of the Tafseer, and Allah knows best.

*Some books may not contain all of these sections.

Quick Facts About

Suratun-Naas…

Suratun-Naas was
revealed in Makkah.

Suratun-Naas is the last surah in the

Qur'aan. 1

Nothing like Suratun-Naas has been

given to any prophet before
Rasulullah‫ﷺ‬. 2

6
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

So what is Suratun-Naas
all about?
Suratun-Naas tells everyone in the world
how to ask Allah for protection from the
whispers of Shaytaan and his helpers!

7
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

Now let’s learn what makes

Suratun-Naas so…

8
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

The first thing that is so special

about Suratun-Naas is that…

Suratun-Naas has a
special name!

Suratun-Naas is one of the

two surahs called…

Al-Moo’awwithatayn

9
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

This name means…

“The Two Protectors”

Suratun-Naas and Suratul-Falaq (which

you will study later) are two surahs that
we should recite to ask for protection
(that means to be safe from harm), so
Rasulullah‫ ﷺ‬used to call them both
together Al-Moo`awwithatayn,
The Two Protectors.

10
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

If you ask Allah to keep you safe,

do you think He will?

Color in the correct answer!

11
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

Why do we need
protection?

If you wanted to lock a cabinet to

keep your things safe inside, you would
probably use one lock and that would
be enough, right? What about if you
put two locks? It would be super safe!

Well, Allah wants us to be super safe,

too! So He has given us two locks to
protect us.

When we use both locks, by reciting

both of these surahs together, then we
will be super safe from harm, insha-
Allah!

12
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

Color in the locks!

13
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

Now that we know about

Suratun-Naas’ special name, it’s time to
learn another very special thing about
Suratun-Naas!

14
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

The second thing that is so special

about Suratun-Naas is that…

Rasulullah‫ ﷺ‬loved reciting

the Moo`awwithatayn for protection!
Rasulullah‫ ﷺ‬loved reciting them so much
that he would recite them 3 times every
night (along with Suratul-Ikhlaas which
you will study later) before he
went to sleep at night! 3

15
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

Rasulullah’s wife, Aishah , said

that before he went to bed he
would blow into his hands, recite the
Moo`awwithatayn (and Suratul-
Ikhlaas), and then wipe his hands over
his whole body (head and face first,
then the front of his body, then as far
as he could reach).4 He would do this
three times.

Rasulullah‫ ﷺ‬would also recite the

Moo`awwithatayn at other times as
well.

When he was sick, he would recite

them and rub his hands on his body in
the same way that he did before
going to sleep at night.

If he was too sick to do it himself, his

wife would do it for him, it was that
important! 5

16
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

Do you recite the Moo`awwithatayn

before you go to bed?

What about when you are sick?

Color in the bed!

17
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

Now let’s get ready to learn

more about Suratun-Naas…

We will start by learning 6 new words

from this surah. These are words that are
used in Suratun-Naas and in many other
suwaar (that word is the plural of surah)
that you will study as well.

The more words you know from the

Qur’aan, the better you will understand
each surah that you learn insha-Allah.

Understanding the Qur’aan is what Allah

wants us to do!

So let’s get started

right now!

A story about black magic…

Many of the ayaat (verses) in the Qur’aan

have a story behind them that tells why
they were revealed. These stories are
called…

Asbaab
An-Noozool
The story behind the revelation
of Suratun-Naas is about black magic…

26
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

Some people wanted to harm

Rasulullah‫ ﷺ‬because they did not
like Islaam…
One of these people was a man
named Labid ibn Al-A'saam.9 Although
he said he was a Muslim, in his heart he
did not like Islaam at all. He really
wanted to harm Rasulullah‫ﷺ‬. So, he
asked Rasulullah's servant boy to bring
him the comb of the blessed Prophet‫ﷺ‬,
which had a few strands of hair in it.

27
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

The boy did so, and Labid used the

comb and hair, along with a knotted
rope, to cast black magic on
Rasulullah‫ﷺ‬.

Labid hid this black magic inside a

piece of dried date palm bark, which
he then placed under a rock, inside a
well called “Dharwaan”.

This was the worst kind of black magic.

It made Rasulullah‫ ﷺ‬think he had done
things he had not really done, and he‫ﷺ‬
felt ill for quite a while.

What do you suppose Rasulullah‫ﷺ‬

did about this problem?

28
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

29
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

Rasulullah‫ ﷺ‬did what he

always did...
Rasulullah‫ ﷺ‬asked Allah for help. So,
Allah sent two angels in a dream to tell
Rasulullah‫ ﷺ‬about the black magic and
where it was located.

Right away Rasulullah‫ ﷺ‬sent some men

to look for it, and it was exactly where
the angels had said it would be. The
men filled the well in with dirt so that no
one could use it for black magic again.

It was because of this event that Allah

revealed Suratun-Naas and Suratul-Falaq,
together known as the Moo'awwithatayn
(Two Protectors).

When Rasulullah‫ ﷺ‬recited the two

surahs, the spell was broken and he was
cured!

30
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

So what happened to Labid?

Some of the Muslims wanted to punish or
even kill him, but Rasulullah‫ ﷺ‬said not to.
Rasulullah‫ ﷺ‬was happy Allah had cured
him, and did not want to harm anyone.

Besides, Rasulullah‫ ﷺ‬had the

Moo'awwithatayn... he was not worried,
Al-Hamdoolillah!

Now let's learn what Allah taught

Rasulullah‫ ﷺ‬to say in Suratun-Naas for
protection, so that we can have that
protection as well, insha-Allah!

31
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

32
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

Allah tells us exactly what to

say in order to be protected...

First, we say that we are asking

Allah to protect us. We are not
asking for protection from anyone
else, like a policeman, or a teacher,
or an Imaam, or even our parents.

Although all of those people

are very important and can do
things to help us in many ways,
only Allah can protect us.10

34
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

Next, we praise Allah…

Allah has taught us in Suratun-Naas
that when you ask Him for something,
like protection, you praise Him before
moving on to ask for what you need.
Allah wants us to use the best manners
when speaking with Him, and to
remember how important and
powerful His is.

So, in the first three ayaat of Suratun-

Naas we say three important things
about Allah that we should always
remember.

Color in your numbers!

35
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

These three things help us to

remember why Allah is the only one
who can protect us.

Allah is the only one who can

protect us because He is the only…

LORD!
KING!
GOD!
36
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

Allah is the Lord of the worlds, the

King of all kings, and the one and only
God, so no one can do anything that
He does not want them to do. And in
the end, all of creation will come back
to Allah on the Day of Judgment to
answer for everything that they did.

37
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

So, what are we asking

protection from?
It must be something very important
otherwise, we would not need to ask
Allah, the Lord of the worlds, the King of
kings, the only God for protection.
So what is it?

Suratun-Naas what we need to ask
protection from.

You might think it is something big and

scary, but it’s not. It’s not even something
that will hurt us.

The most dangerous thing in the world,

that we need to seek Allah’s protection
from is…

The Whispers of Shaytaan

You see, Shaytaan cannot do anything

to anyone without Allah’s permission. All
he can do is whisper suggestions and
then wait to see if anyone will listen to
him. After he whispers…he runs away!

42
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

43
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

Why does he run away?

He runs away for two reasons.

If a person remembers Allah, and

decides not to listen to Shaytaan,
Shaytaan runs away because
remembering Allah is something
that Shaytaan does not like.

Or, if someone listens to what

Shaytaan has told them to do, then
Shaytaan runs away because his job
is done, he got the person to
disobey Allah. 11

44
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

Why do we need protection

from whispers?
We need protection because if someone
listens to Shaytaan’s whispers,
they will be in trouble with Allah.

It’s just like when you do something your

parents have told you not to do. A good
child never wants to get in trouble with
his or her parents because the things
parents tell them not to do are bad, and
doing bad things can hurt themselves or
others.

The same is true for Allah. If you are a

good Muslim, you do not want to get in
trouble with Allah because He will punish
you, and you may harm yourself or others
through your sins.

How does Shaytaan

whisper to us?
Shaytaan is unseen, so we cannot see
him when he whispers to us, but Allah
tells us in Suratun-Naas that Shaytaan
whispers into our hearts.

You see, Shaytaan waits for times

when we are sad, happy, or angry
(when we are more concerned with
what we want than what Allah wants),
to get us to do what Allah has told us
not to do.

So, that is the time that Shaytaan

suggests we do things that he promises
us will bring relief from sadness, help us
enjoy happiness to the fullest, or get
satisfaction through anger. But all of
Shaytaan’s promises are lies…

47
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

For example…
At funerals, when people are
overcome with sadness from the loss of
someone dear to them, they may wail,
scream, or even deny Allah, due to the
overwhelming pain in their heart. 12

Because people are so concerned with

what their heart wants (rather than
what Allah wants) they are more likely
to listen to Shaytaan at this time.

48
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

49
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

Another example…
During weddings, it is common for
people to play music, dance, drink,
waste food, get into debt, and dress in
ways that Allah does not like, because
they want to show the extreme
happiness they feel in their heart.

Because people are so concerned with

what their heart wants (rather than
what Allah wants) they are more likely
to listen to Shaytaan at this time.

50
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

51
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

Another example…
When people argue or fight, they are
often unreasonable, unfair, unjust, or
even violent, because they want to
calm the burning anger in their heart.

Because people are so concerned with

what their heart wants (rather than
what Allah wants) they are more likely
to listen to Shaytaan at these times.

May Allah protect us from Shaytaan,

and from losing sight of what Allah has
told us to do because of the strong
emotions that we feel in our hearts.

Suratun-Naas ends with a

reminder that there is not
just one Shaytaan…

When Allah talks about Shaytaan in

the Qur’aan, he is talking about lblees
(the first Jinn to disobey Allah) and
about his friends (those who listen to
him).

Although Iblees is a jinn and most of his

helpers are jinn as well, many of his
friends are actually human beings.17

You see, both jinn and human beings

can choose to listen to Allah or not. 13
Anyone, jinn or human, who chooses
to disobey Allah and listen to
Shaytaan, is a Shaytaan as well.

So we have to be careful not to

listen to any Shaytaan!

55
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

How can Shaytaan talk to

everybody, all over the world,
at the same time?
He doesn’t, Shaytaan has helpers, who he
tells to do work for him. Shaytaan and his
helpers are called “Shay-yaa-teen”.
Everyone has one Shaytaan that tries to
get that person to do bad things, so there
are many, many Shayaateen. 14

Did Rasulullah‫ ﷺ‬have a

Shaytaan, too?
Yes, he did, but Allah helped Rasulullah‫ ﷺ‬to
teach his Shaytaan about Islaam, and then
his Shaytaan became a Muslim! 15

56
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

57
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

Isn’t it scary to have a Shaytaan?

Nope! Here’s why…
We all have germs on our hands, right?

Can you see those germs? No.

Are those germs dangerous? They can be.

Are you scared of germs? Probably not.

As long as you wash your hands and

bathe regularly you are safe from germs.

Well Shaytaan is like a germ!

We all have a Shaytaan, we can’t see
him, and he can be dangerous. But if
we remember Allah, and recite the
Moo`awwithatayn we will…

Wash that germy Shaytaan

right off!

Don’t be scared!
Be Prepared!
Some people hear about Suratun-Naas,
and how it is one of the two protectors,
and they get scared. They worry that
Shaytaan or his helpers will hurt them.

But it is Shaytaan who wants you to be

scared. He knows he cannot hurt you.

Allah even tells us in the Qur’aan that

Shaytaan cannot hurt anyone,
but Shaytaan doesn’t want you to
know that! 16

Shaytaan wants you to be scared of him,

and his friends (those who listen to him),
so that you will listen to him, too.

But Allah wants the whole world to be

prepared to fight Shaytaan (like a strong
army is ready to go into battle), so He has
taught us three very good reasons to
be prepared, not scared!

60
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

Color the three threes!

61
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

#1
Shaytaan can only
whisper suggestions.

Hurting people is not what Shaytaan is

interested in doing. What Shaytaan really
wants to do is to get us to disobey Allah
(like he did), so we will be in trouble,
like he is. 17

But Allah tells us in the Qur’aan exactly

what Shaytaan can and cannot do.

Shaytaan can only whisper suggestions

and then wait to see if people will
listen to him. Allah has given him permission
to do that in order to test us and see which
of us is more mindful of Allah.

Shaytaan cannot do anything else

without Allah’s permission. 18

62
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

Remember the story of

Prophet Adam & his wife Hawwa'
when they were in Jannah?

63
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

Shaytaan did not hurt them,

he could not hurt them…
he did not even want to hurt them!

What he wanted is for them to eat from the

tree that Allah told them not to eat from.
He wanted them to disobey Allah. 19

Why? Because Shaytaan wants to prove

that other people will disobey Allah
just like he did.

So be prepared to fight Shaytaan with

Suratun-Naas, don’t be scared of him!

64
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

65
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

#2
Shaytaan’s plan is weak,
and all his promises are just lies. 20

Like we said before, Shaytaan’s only

way to get mankind to listen to him is
to whisper suggestions.

But all his suggestions fall apart after

a while, and his lies always are
discovered.

The people who are good, and listen

to Allah, will not be fooled by his lies.

66
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

Here is an example to help you

understand better…

67
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

Imagine there is a child in your class

who keeps whispering to you to try to
get you to do things that you know will
get you in trouble with the teacher.

Would you be very scared of

that child?

What about if you called the teacher

every time he/she tried to whisper to
you?

Who would be scared then,

you or the child?

Well, Shaytaan is like that child. Every

time he whispers to you, just call on
Allah (by reciting Suratun-Naas) and
Shaytaan will run away!

So be prepared to fight Shaytaan with

Suratun-Naas, don’t be scared of him!

68
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

69
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

#3
Everything in creation is
controlled by Allah.

Nothing, and no one, can do anything

that Allah does not let them do.

Even if all of the creation got together

to harm someone, if Allah doesn’t
want it to happen, it won’t happen.

So even though Shaytaan has the

freedom to try and whisper to people
to get them to do bad things, if Allah
does not want that bad thing to
happen, it WON’T!

to Shaytaan, not Allah. Shaytaan told
them to burn Ibraaheem in a fire to
stop him from teaching about Allah.

They made a huge fire and threw

Ibraaheem into it, but Allah did not
want Ibraaheem to be hurt. So Allah
commanded the fire to be
calm and cool. 21

Ibraaheem stayed in the fire for

days, but was never burned.

When the fire went out, the people were

amazed to see that Ibraaheem had
been protected from their plan! This
shows us that no one can do any harm
without Allah’s permission.

So be prepared to fight Shaytaan with

Suratun-Naas, don’t be scared of him!

What are we asking Allah to protect us from

in Suratun-Naas?

The whispers of Shaytaan and his

helpers.

Why do we need protection from whispers?

If we listen to Shaytaan’s whispers, we

will disobey Allah, and then Allah will
be angry with us. Plus, we may harm
ourselves or others from our sins.

When does Shaytaan whisper to us?

When we are really sad, happy or

angry and are too busy thinking about
how we feel to remember Allah.

How do we make Shaytaan leave us alone?

Remember Allah or recite the

Moo`awwithatayn.

Is there only one Shaytaan?

No, Shaytaan (Iblees) has many

helpers.

77

get us to do bad things?

Yes

Does Shaytaan want to hurt us?

No, Shaytaan wants us to disobey

Allah.

Can Shaytaan do anything that he likes?

without Allah’s permission. Even the
whispering he does is by Allah’s
permission to test us and see which of
us is more mindful of Allah.

Should we be scared of Shaytaan?

No, we should not be scared, we

should be prepared to fight him!

Notes to the text

1 It must be noted, that although Suratun-Naas is

the last surah in the Qur’aan according to order,
it is not the last surah that was revealed to
Rasulullah‫ﷺ‬.

To explain, the order in which the Qur’aan was

revealed was linked to specific events in time so
that the people would understand the verses in
context and could pass this information on to
later generations. Once all the verses of the
Qur’aan were revealed, Angel Gibreel read
the entire Qur’aan, with the surahs in the order
we know today, from beginning to end with
Rasulullah‫ ﷺ‬twice during Ramadaan in the year
of Rasulullah’s‫ ﷺ‬death.

The Qur’aan (i.e. complete book) we have

today was compiled based on this order from
the memories and written records of the
Sahaaba soon after the death of Rasulullah‫ﷺ‬.

2 `Uqbah bin `Amir reported that the Messenger

of Allah‫ ﷺ‬said, “Do you not see that there have
been Ayaat revealed to me tonight the like of
which has not been seen before) They
are…Say: "I seek refuge with, the Lord of Al-
Falaq.'‘) (Qur’aan 113:1) and; Say: "I seek refuge
with the Lord of mankind.'') (Qur’aan 114:1)
(Sahih Muslim, Ahmad, At-Tirmidhi and An-
Nasa'i)

3 Aishah said that whenever the Prophet‫ﷺ‬

would go to bed every night, he would put his
palms together and blow into them. Then he
would recite into them (his palms), `Say: He is
Allah, One' (Suratul-Ikhlaas), `Say: I seek refuge
with the Lord of Al-Falaq' (Suratul-Falaq), and
`Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind'
(Suratun-Naas). Then he would wipe whatever
he was able to of his body with them (his
palms). He would begin wiping his head and
face with them and the front part of his body.
He would do this (wiping his body) three times.
(Sahih Al-Bukhari and other Sunaan compilers
also recorded this same Hadith)

4 See note 3.

5 Imam Malik recorded from Aishah that

whenever the Messenger of Allah‫ ﷺ‬was
suffering from an ailment, he would recite the
Moo`awwithatayn over himself and blow (over
himself). Then if his pain became severe,
Aishah said that she would recite the
Moo`awwithatayn over him and take his hand
and wipe it over himself seeking the blessing of
those surahs.
(Sahih Al-Bukhari, Abu Dawood, An-Nasa'i and
Ibn Majah)

6 The
Basmallah should be recited before all
suwaar except Suratut-Taubah (Surah #9)
which has no Basmallah in the beginning.

80
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

As for the Isti'aadhah, it only needs to be

recited once when beginning to recite
Qur’aan; it does not need to be repeated for
each surah you recite in one sitting.

For example, if you are practicing a number of

suwaar at one time, you will say the Isti'aadhah
before starting, there is no need to repeat it for
each surah recited unless you stop reciting to
do other activities and then return to your
reciting at a later time. In this case, the
Isti'aadhah would need to be said again
before starting to recite.

7 Allahhas said that we should seek refuge with

Him from Shaytaan before reciting Qur’aan by
saying, “A-oo-thoo-bill-laa-he-min-nash-shay-
taan-nir-ra-jeem”.

(So when you) want to recite the Qur'an,

seek refuge with Allah from Shaytaan, the
outcast (the cursed one). (Qur’aan 16:98)

The majority of scholars state that reciting this

phrase, known as the Isti'aathah in Arabic
(pronounced Is-ti-`aa-thah), is recommended
and not required, and therefore, not reciting it
does not constitute a sin. However, Rasulullah ‫ﷺ‬
always said the Isti`aathah. In addition, the
Isti`aathah wards off the evil of Shaytaan,
which is necessary; the rule is that the means
needed to implement a requirement of the
religion is itself also required. And when one
says, "I seek refuge with Allah from the cursed

devil.'' Then this will suffice.

(Tafseer Ibn Kathir)

8 Saying the Basmallah, “Bis-mil-laa-hir-rah-maa-

nir-ra-heem” before reciting any surah, except
for the ninth, Suratut-Towba, which does not
have the Basmallah in the beginning, is agreed
upon by all scholars past and present.

9 "Inthe Book of Medicine of his Sahih, Al-

Bukhari recorded that Aishah said, "The
Messenger of Allah‫ ﷺ‬was bewitched until he
thought that he had relations with his wives, but
he had not had relations with them.'' Sufyaan
said, "This is the worst form of magic when it
reaches this stage.''* So the Prophet‫ ﷺ‬said, 'O
`Aishah ! Do you know that Allah has
answered me concerning that which I asked
Him two men came to me** and one of them
sat by my head while the other sat by my feet.
The one who was sitting by my head said to the
other one, `What is wrong with this man' The
other replied, `He is bewitched.' The first one
said, `Who bewitched him' The other replied,
`Labid bin A`sam***. He is a man from the tribe
of Banu Zurayq who is an ally of the Jews, and a
hypocrite.' The first one asked, `With what (did
he bewitch him)' The other replied, `With a
comb and hair from the comb.'**** The first one
asked, `Where (is the comb)' The other
answered, `In the dried bark of a male date
palm under a rock in a well called Dharwan.'
Aishah said, "So he went to the well to

remove it (the comb with the hair). Then he‫ﷺ‬

said, 'This is the well that I saw. It was as if its
water had henna soaked in it and its palm trees
were like the heads of devils.) So he‫ ﷺ‬removed
it (of the well). Then I (Aishah ) said, `Will you
not make this public' He‫ ﷺ‬replied, 'Allah has
cured me and I hate to spread (the news of)
wickedness to any of the people."
(Sahih Al-Bukhari, as quoted in Tafseer Ibn
Kathir)

Author’s Notes:

*Some scholars state that Rasulullah‫ ﷺ‬was ill for up to 60

days, and Allah knows best how long the time was.

**In other narrations it is explained that the two men

were two angels that visited Rasulullah‫ ﷺ‬in his dream.

***The man’s name is also recorded as Lubaid and

Labeed depending on the source.

****Some narrations state that the teeth of the comb

were used with the hair and tied into a rope with eleven
knots, and Allah knows best)

10 “…Were it not for the Grace and Mercy of

Allah unto you, all but a few of you would have
fallen into the clutches of Shaytaan.”
(Qur’aan 4:83)

11There are two views as to the meaning of (The

whisperer, Al-Waswaas, who withdraws.) in
Suratun-Naas.

83
[email protected] 26 Aug 2020

First, Al-Mu`tamir bin Sulayman reported that his

father said, "It has been mentioned to me that
Shaytaan is Al-Waswas. He blows into the heart of
the Son of Adam when he is sad and when he is
happy. But when he (man) remembers Allah,
Shaytaan withdraws.''

Second, Al-`Awfi reported from Ibn `Abbas; (The

whisperer.) "He is Shaytaan. He whispers and then
when he is obeyed, he withdraws.''

12 Weeping is allowed when a loved one has died

(i.e. tears falling from the eyes), but loud crying or
wailing is prohibited. The evidence for this is in
many ahadith, some of which are related below.

On the death of Rasulullah’s son, Ibrahim, who was

an infant at the time…

“We went with Allah's Apostle‫ ﷺ‬to the blacksmith

Abu Sayf, and he was the husband of the wet-
nurse of Ibrahim (the son of the Prophet). Allah's
Apostle took Ibrahim and kissed him and smelled
him and later we entered Abu Sayf's house and at
that time Ibrahim was in his last breaths, and the
eyes of Allah's Apostle‫ ﷺ‬started shedding tears.
'Abdur-Rahman bin 'Awf said, "O Allah's Apostle,
even you are weeping!" He said, "O Ibn 'Awf, this is
mercy." Then he wept more and said, "The eyes
are shedding tears and the heart is grieved, and
we will not say except what pleases our Lord, O
Ibrahim! Indeed, we are grieved by your
separation." (Sahih Al-Bukhari)

84

On several other occasions…

"There are two practices found among people,
both of which indicate disbelief: ridiculing the
ancestry (of others) and wailing over the dead."
(Sahih Muslim)
"Verily the dead are punished in their graves by the
wailing of their family over them."
(Sahih Al-Bukhari)
"The deceased who is wailed over is tortured for
that wailing." (Sahih Al-Bukhari)
"He who slaps the cheeks, tears the clothes and
follows the tradition of the Days of Ignorance is not
from us." (Sahih Al-Bukhari)
13 Not all Jinn are Shayaateen. There are
Shayateen (those who disobey Allah) from men
and Jinn, and there are Muslims from among the
Jinn and men as well. See Suratul-Jinn (72) for
more information on those among the Jinn who
followed Rasulullah‫ﷺ‬.

14 See note 13.

15 Rasulullah‫ﷺ‬ said, “There is not a single one of

you except that his companion (a devil) has been
assigned to him.) They (the Companions) said,
"What about you, O Messenger of Allah‫ ''ﷺ‬He
replied, “Yes. However, Allah has helped me
against him and he has accepted Islam. Thus, he
only commands me to do good.”
(Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

85

16 “It is but Shaytaan who instills [into you] fear of

his allies: so fear them not, but fear Me, if you
are [truly] believers!”
(Qur’aan 3:175)

“And they have invented a blood-relationship

between Him and the Jinns: but the Jinns know
(quite well) that they have indeed to appear
(before his Judgment- Seat)!”
(Qur’aan 37:158)

17 Thestory of how Iblees disobeyed Allah by

not bowing down to Adam is detailed in
Suratul-Hijr. Allah states…

“So the angels prostrated themselves, all of

them together: not so Iblees: He refused to be
among those who prostrated themselves. Allah
said: "O Iblees! what is your reason for not
being among those who prostrated
themselves?" (Iblees) said: "I am not one to
prostrate Myself to man, whom Thou didst
create from sounding clay, from mud molded
into shape. Allah said: "Then get thee out from
here; for thou art rejected, accursed. And the
curse shall be on thee till the Day of Judgment.
(Iblees) said: "O My Lord! give me then respite
till the Day the (dead) are raised. Allah said:
"Respite is granted thee till the day of the time
appointed. (Iblees) said: "O My Lord! because
Thou hast put me in the wrong, I will make
(wrong) fair-seeming to them on the earth, and
I will put them all in the wrong, except Thy

servants among them, sincere and purified (by

Thy Grace). Allah said: "This (way of My sincere
servants) is indeed a way that leads straight to
Me. For over my servants no authority shall thou
have, except such as put themselves in the
wrong and follow thee."
(Qur’aan 15:30-42)

18 See note 17.

19 The story of Prophet Adam is detailed in

many places in the Qur’aan. Allah states in the
following two ayaat that Shaytaan was
responsible for misguiding Adam and his wife
Hawwa'…

“O ye Children of Adam! Let not Shaytaan

seduce you, in the same manner as He got
your parents out of the Garden, stripping them
of their raiment, to expose their shame: for he
and his tribe watch you from a position where
ye cannot see them: We made the evil one’s
friends (only) to those without faith.”
(Qur’aan 7:27)

“Then did Shaytaan make them slip from the

(garden), and get them out of the state (of
felicity) in which they had been...”
(Qur’aan 2:36)

20 “Fight,
then, against those friends of
Shaytaan: verily, Shaytaan’s guile is weak

87

indeed!”
(Qur’aan 4:76)

“…But Shaytaan’s wish is to lead them

(mankind) astray far away (from the right)”
(Qur’aan 4:60)

21 “Wesaid, "O fire! be thou cool, and (a

means of) safety for Abraham!"
(Qur’aan 21:69)
