1. INTRODUCTION

This Method Statement covers the installation of Pipes & Fittings for Fire Protection
Systems. This procedure is to define the method used to ensure that the Fire Protection
Systems installation has been carried out as per contract requirements.
The Fire Fighting system consists of Fire Pumps, Pipes & fittings, valves, zone control
valve and assemblies. It shall be used to protect the human life and storage material inside the
building in case of fire by providing Sprinklers, Hose Reels, Landing Valves and Breeching inlet.
The system shall operate by monitoring pressure and flow of water inside the pipe lines through
the flow switches interface with fire alarm system controls.

2. SCOPE OF WORKS

2.1.1 All materials received at site shall be inspected and stored properly upon
received.
2.1.2 All installation / construction works shall be carried out in compliance with
the approved shop drawings and project specification.
2.1.3 Installation and Inspection shall be conducted by PEW and demonstrated to
the inspector / Engineer.
2.1.4 Fire Fighting piping and fitting is installed in according with local Regulation
and Recommendation of International code of practice.
2.1.5 Verification of inspection checklists, which will be submitted later, shall be
witnessed, recorded, and signed by the site inspector/ representative.

The Drawings and Installation details of manufacturer should provide enough details for
the installation to be carried out. In the absence of any information, the above documents
should be referred.

5. RESPONSIBILITIES

5.1. The Construction Manager is over-all responsible for the implementation of the method
statement, to ensure that the team of engineers & foremen are aware of this MS and,
to ensure that all resources (labour, material and equipment) are available to carry out
the work as planned.

5.2. The Sr. Project Engineer is responsible to carry out the work as per approved MS. He
is also available to ensure adequate equipment for mobilization works are in place
prior to starting of work.
5.3. QA/QC Engineer is responsible to ensure work has been done as per the
specifications & approved Shop drawings, inspections are done as per Quality Control
Procedure and the inspection & test plan.

5.4. The Safety Engineer is responsible that all Safety precautions are in place, and that all
personnel on site are using required Personal Protective Equipment (helmet, gloves,
Safety shoes, coveralls, eye protection, etc.). He must also ensure that all relevant
permissions / work permits are available for the works.

6. SEQUENCE AND METHOD

6.1. Preparation Works

6.1.1 Ensure that all safety requirements are in place in accordance with project
safety plan.
6.1.2 Ensure that the latest revision of the approved issued for construction
drawing is used.
6.1.3 All material will be ordered after approval of the drawings and technical
submittals.
6.1.4 All material will be transported to the site by the supplier and care shall be
taken by the store keeper to ensure that all the materials are not damaged
during transit.
6.1.5 Special care shall be taken by the storekeeper to protect the Firefighting
pipes & fittings from physical damage and direct sun light. All materials shall
be stored in shaded area
6.1.6 On receipt of the material at site, QA/QC Engineer/Site Engineer shall
inspect the material internally and inspection shall be offered to the Engineer
for approval in MDIR (Material Delivery Inspection Request) form.
6.1.7 Ensure all the material used, have passed receiving inspection in
accordance with QA procedures and are not damaged or defective. Any

non-conforming material must be labelled by storekeeper and returned to
quarantine area in accordance with QA procedure.
6.1.8 Ensure that all plumbers and helpers are aware of the correct materials
handling and installation procedures to ensure best quality of workmanship.
Training shall be provided by site engineers/supervisors as and when
required.
6.1.9 All Fire Fighting pipes & fittings shall be cleaned before installation.
6.1.10 Main contractor to ensure that prior to installation of Fire Fighting pipes, all
building surfaces to which supporting systems are being installed are
completed to acceptable tolerance and are in a suitably clean and dry
condition. Any unsatisfactory conditions are to be reported to Project
Manager and installation shall not proceed until corrective action measures
have been taken by him.
6.1.11 Ladders, step ladders and scaffoldings during construction will be used at
site as per the safety plan. All Ladders shall be inspected prior to use, and
scaffold shall be erected as per requirement and inspected and certified
prior to use.
6.1.12 Prior to start the work, engineers/supervisors from the execution team shall
ensure that the latest approved construction drawings are available at site.
6.1.13 Installation of Fire Fighting pipes shall be coordinated with architectural,
structural and MEP works for a fit for purpose installation. Any deviation
shall be intimated to the engineer for approval prior to start of the work.
6.1.14 Supervisor shall ensure equipment and correct tools are available for
installation and to achieve compliance with the contract requirements.

6.2 STORAGE AND HANDLING OF MATERIAL:


 On receipt of the Pipes, Fittings, and accessories at site, necessary precautions shall be
taken for unloading, shifting & storage, as follows.
 Pipes & Equipment are offloaded / handled using proper capacity forklift and stacked on a
wooden supports above ground. Pipes will be stores and stacked as per manufacturer
recommendation.
 Pipes & Equipment’s will be stored at laydown area and shall be covered with tarpaulin
sheet.
 Pipe and equipment will be handled using Forklift or manually (for smaller sizes) and shall be
stored within the covered storage area.
 All the received materials will be checked by the QA/QC Engineer to ensure that the
materials are as per approved material submittal in terms of their make, type, point of origin
and capacity etc.
 Inform the Construction Manager if any damage or irregularity were noted during offloading
and storage of any long lead items.
 Materials found not suitable or damaged shall be marked “X” and removed from site &
replaced by approved materials.
 Materials found suitable for installation shall be submitted for Consultant approval through
Material Inspection Request.
 Care shall be taken to protect the material while taking them to the final location of
installation.

7.0 INSTALLATON METHODOLOGY:

7.1 PAINTING OF THE FIRE FIGHTINGS PIPES


 Colour scheme and paint manufacture approval shall be obtained before work is
command.
 All finished surfaces shall be free from runs, drops, ridges, waves, laps, brush marks
and variations in colour and finish.
 Adjacent areas and installations shall be protected by the use of masking tape, drop
cloths or other precautionary measures.
 Check the surface irregularities, ensure surface to be painted are cleaned.

 Keep all brushes clean and serviceable condition and thoroughly clean out brushes
before applying the paint.
 The first coat paint on pipe or board finishing shall include such repeated touching up to
produce a uniform colour.
 Apply the second coat and make sure that is it dry before shifting to the site
 Paint only in a well-ventilated area for avoiding poisoning with thinner.
 Attention to all material and floor on the painting area for avoid paint dripping

7.2 PIPE FABRICATION


 Check the pipe length required based on the approved shop drawing.
 Mark the desired length on the pipe and cut it by using a hacksaw. Make sure
the pipe is perpendicular to the cutting wheel.
 Place the pipe in the threading machine and thread it accordingly. Make sure
the thread of the pipe is in good condition.
 Remove the oil from the pipe end after the threading procedure and wrap it with
shellac & jute
 Install the pipe to the screw fitting.
 Workshop shall be free of hazardous material. And clean daily, approved
fabricator pic shall operate the machine.

7.3 GI PIPE SLEEVE INSTALLATION


 Check the approved shop drawings for the actual location of the pipe sleeve to
be provided.
 Mark the location of the pipe and identify the size of pipe sleeve to be provided.
(Note: The pipe sleeve should be 1 pipe size bigger than the actual pipe
running)
 Then, the location and size of pipe sleeve to be provided shall be submitted to
Consultant approval.
 Upon approval, the pipe sleeve shall be provided.

7.4 INSTALLATON OF DROP IN ANCHOR IN RCC SLAB
 With reference to the approved floor plan shop drawings and the coordination drawings,
all routes shall be carefully marked at the bottom of the precast hollow core slab by
Foreman using a marker and chalk powder and shall be reconfirmed the routes with
related MEP services for any clashes.
 Location of pipe support shall be marked on the soffit of precast Hollow core slabs as
shown in the approved shop drawing.
 Marking the location shall be done by coordinating with Main Contractor in order to
prevent damage to the reinforcement strands. The measurement between reinforced
strands and from the edge of slab to reinforcement strand shall be followed as per the
construction drawing of hollow core precast slab.
 The exact location at these strands can be identified with the above method and care
shall be taken to avoid damaging the same while drilling the required hole.
 Holes of the required sizes shall be made by drilling machine where the marking has
been done.
 Approved Double insulated tools, inspected, colour coded will be used
 Supporting arrangements shall be provided with proper fixing arrangements.
 Approved Anchor shall be inserted within the hole, utilizing the proper tools and
according to manufactures recommendation and site demonstration.

7.5 Installation of Pipe Supports
 Pipe Support spacing shall be provided as per the relevant approvedshopsdrawing.
 Pipe mains running in shafts shall be supported by galvanized split clamps at all levels,
so that the entire load can be uniformly distributed.
 Pipeline supports shall not be attached to any plant or terminal unit.
 All pipes shall be fixed and shall be run in parallel to the height as
Per approved co-ordinated shop drawing.
 All open ends shall be protected by plastic caps and shall be removed at the time
Of straight joints for successive pipe connection.

7.5 Threaded Pipes (up to 50 mm ø)

 Before installing any pipe work at high level, site engineer shall ensure that all dirt,
Scale and other foreign matter is removed from inside the piping before fixing.
 Threaded pipes shall be joined with other pipes with approved boss white and jute/
Teflon tape for small size pipes.

 The pipes shall be tightened with pipe wrench to the required tightening pressure.
 Union/ Couplings of approved materials shall be provided for connecting the pipes.
 Joints in threaded steel pipe shall conform to ANSI standards.
 Ensure and confirm the Cut pipe ends shall be clean, square, and free from
Distortion.
 Ensure and confirm the smooth and reamed to a distinct countersink.
 All joints shall be carefully reamed and jointing compound/ tape should be applied
On male threads only.
 Ensure and confirm the jointing between lengths of pipe work and fittings shall be
Carried out in such a manner that a continuous smooth bore is maintained with the
Joint.
 Ensure and confirm, no lipping or protrusion of the jointing material with the
Jointing material within the bore of the joints.
Adequate lighting and no smoking to be ensured.

7.7 Piping with Grooved System (65mm up to 200mm)

 Pipe joining from 65 mm to 200mm in diameter shall be of Grooved system.


 The groove size of the pipes shall be as follows.

7.8Installation of Joint Fittings (Coupling, Flange, Elbow, Tees & Reducers)


Mechanical with threaded outlet:
 Before installing any pipe work at high level, site foreman shall ensure that all dirt, scale
and other foreign matter is removed from inside the piping before fixing.
All the grooved pipes shall be joined with other pipes with approved Boss white & jute/
Teflon tape on small size pipes.
 The pipes shall be tightened with pipe wrench to the required tightening torque.
Couplings of approved materials shall be provided for connecting the pipes/
Joints in threaded steel pipe shall conform to ANSI Standards.
 Ensure and confirm the Cut pipe ends shall be clean, square, and free from distortion of
the pipes to be connected with fittings.
All joints shall be carefully reamed and joined as per grooving procedure.

 Ensure and confirm the jointing between lengths of pipe work and fittings shall be carried
out in such a manner that a continuous smooth bore is maintained with the joint.

 All people should use scaffold for access to height, trained people will be only employed.

7.9 Flexible Coupling (for Grooved Pipes)


 The above shall be installed where expansion, contractions and or deflection

7.10 Reducing Coupling (For Grooved Pipes)

 All the pipes shall be joined with reducing coupling wherever required as per
riser diagram.
 Reducing coupling designed with rubber gasket prevent smaller pipe from
telescoping in to larger pipe during vertical assembly.
 The pipes and coupling shall be tightened with torque spanner to the required
tightening torque.
 Ensure and confirm the smooth and reamed to a distinct countersink.
 Ensure and confirm the jointing between lengths of pipe work and fittings shall
be carried out in such a manner that a continuous smooth bore is
maintained with the joint.
 Ensure and confirm, no lipping or protrusion of the jointing material with the
jointing material within the bore of the joints.

 The pipes and fittings shall be painted as per approved document

7.11 Flange Coupling (For Grooved Pipes)

 All the pipes shall be joined with flange coupling wherever required as per
raiser diagram and site condition.
 Flange coupling allows for direct connection of grooved system.
 The pipes shall be tightened with torque spanner set to the required tightening
torque.
 Ensure and confirm the smooth and reamed to a distinct countersink.
 Ensure and confirm the jointing between lengths of pipe work and fittings shall
be carried out in such a manner that a continuous smooth bore is
maintained with the joint.
 Ensure and confirm, no lipping or protrusion of the jointing material with the
jointing material within the bore of the joints.
 The pipes and fittings shall be painted as per approved document.

7.12 Elbow (For Grooved pipes)

 All the pipes shall be joined with elbow wherever required as per shop drawing
and site requirement.
 Elbow shall be joined with pipe using grooved coupling. Various types of elbow
shall be used such as 90°, 45° etc.

 The pipes shall be tightened with torque spanner set to the required tightening
torque.
 Ensure and confirm the smooth and reamed to a distinct countersink.
 Ensure and confirm the jointing between lengths of pipe work and fittings shall
be carried out in such a manner that a continuous smooth bore is
maintained with the joint.
 Ensure and confirm, no lipping or protrusion of the jointing material with the
Jointing material within the bore of the joints.
 The pipes and fittings shall be painted as per approved document.

7.13 Reducing Tee (For Grooved pipes)

 All the pipes shall be joined with reducing tee wherever required as per shop drawing.
 Reducing Tees shall be joined with pipe where the branches are taken from main line.
 The pipes shall be tightened with pipe wrench to the required tightening pressure.
 Ensure and confirm the smooth and reamed to a distinct countersink.
 Ensure and confirm the jointing between lengths of pipe work and fittings shall be carried
out in such a manner that a continuous smooth bore is maintained with the joint.
 Ensure and confirm, no lipping or protrusion of the jointing material with the jointing
material within the bore of the joints.
 The pipes and fittings shall be painted as per approved document.

7.14 Tee, Mechanical Tee (For Grooved Pipes)


 All the pipes shall be joined with Tee wherever required as per shop drawing and site
requirement
 The pipes shall be tightened with torque spanner to the required tightening torque.

 The pipes and fittings shall be painted as per approved document.

7.15 Concentric Reducer/ Eccentric Reducer (For Grooved Pipes)

All the pipes shall be joined with Concentric Reducer where the pipes are getting
reduced and concentric with main line as per shop drawing and site requirement.
 All the pipes shall be joined with Eccentric Reducer where the pipes are getting reduced
and off set with main line as per shop drawing.
 The pipes shall be tightened with torque spanner to the required tightening torque.
 Ensure and confirm the smooth and reamed to a distinct countersink of the pipes.
 Ensure and confirm the jointing between lengths of pipe work and fittings shall be
carried out in such a manner that a continuous smooth bore is maintained with the joint.

 Ensure and confirm, no lipping or protrusion of the jointing material with the jointing
material within the bore of the joints.
 The pipes and fittings shall be painted as per approved document.

7.16 Pipe Fittings (Gate Valves, Drain Valves, Butterfly Valve, Non Return Valve,
Pressure Reducing Valve, Lock shield Valve, Landing Valve, Breeching Inlet
Valve, Alarm Check Valve)

 The above fittings shall be provided as per approved shop drawing as applicable
wherever it is required.
 The above shall be installed at locations where easy accessible point available for easy
maintenance.
 Clean pipes, flanges and coupling before installation begin.
 Check if the valve closes hard may be due to debris lodged in the sealing area.
 The valve never should be forced to seal by a wrench to the hand wheel. These distort
the valve components (or) score the sealing surface.
 The inlet and outlet pipe adjacent to the valve should be properly supported to prevent
excessive stress on the valve body.
 The valve should not be used to force a pipe line in to the position as this may result in
distortion of the valve body.
 Ensure and confirm that fitting shall be threaded type and shall be fixed with Teflon/
Shellac and boss white & jute up to 50mm die pipes.

 Ensure and confirm that fittings sizes above 50mm to 500 mm shall be Grooved type
with ceiling gasket rubber rings, as per approved material list.

Automatic air vents shall be provided at the highest point to purge free air that high
pressure during normal operation.
7.18 Drain Valves
The drain valves shall be installed to blow-off sediments from strainers and tanks at
lower level.
The drain points shall be provided at low points for draining and locate where easily
accessible.
7.19 Visual Inspection of Installed Pipe work

The system shall be visually inspected by engineer to ensure that the correct
installation procedures have been followed and that the pipes and fittings are
adequately supported and restrained in the prescribed manner. The inspection shall be
offered for Engineer’s approval.
7.20 Painting
Pipes and fittings shall be painted with approved paint & primer maintaining DFT of 80
to 90 microns.
7.21 Hydraulic Testing
o Hydraulic testing for firefighting pipe shall be carried out with certificates
machine.
o There should be competent person for the hydro testing for firefighting pipes
o Before raising the pressure all open point should be closed.
o Proper barricade the area and put singes/board with emergency contact no.
o Keep monitoring the pressure and release the pressure before leaving the site

7.22 Protection of Finished Sections

 Completed works shall be protected from damage by ensuring pipes are protected
With end caps are provided on pipe ends to prevent entry of any foreign materials inside

10.0 EMERGENCY PROCEDURES


Site general safety procedure will be followed. In case of emergency, the safety officer will
stop the work. He will put in to action the emergency arrangements as described in safety
Manual.

11.0 SUPERVISION
The supervision of these works will be under the direct control of the Construction Manager
assisted by the Project Engineer, Site Engineer and Foreman with the back – up from the
Technical Engineer. All Subcontractor works will be coordinated and controlled by the
Construction Manager. A full-time competent Subcontractor Project Supervisor shall be
deployed to the site.

12.0 QUALITY CONTROL & QUALITY ASSURANCE


The following Form(s) / Checklist(s) shall be prepared and raised to verify the above activity
to ensure that the activity is carried out as per the contract requirements.
a) Inspection Request (IR’s) – Revision 0 shall be raised along with QC checklist for every
completed installation works of Fire Fighting Piping system.
b) QC Checklist for Installation of Water Supply Piping system.

13.0 HEALTH SAFETY & ENVIRONMENT


Safety lights will be used in case of power failure ensuring good illumination for the
personnel.
 Adequate lighting will be provided ensuring the good illumination of the working area.
 Task lighting will be connected to the nearest site distribution board which is RCD
Protected.
 Risk Assessment and their controls are carried out for the following activity / hazards
and Enclosed with this method statement.
a) Using Hand Tools
b) Disposal of Waste Material
The safety officer has the right to stop all the Water Supply Piping activity, if he is not
satisfied with the safety arrangement on site during installation and testing process.
