CHAPTER 1

Let Us Study!

One part of the Earth that affects us is the atmosphere.

The condition of the atmosphere is called weather. When
describing the weather, we always consider the presence
of the sun, condition of the clouds, speed of the wind and
the temperature of the air.

Weather is the condition of the atmosphere in a given

place at a certain time. Weather can change quickly or be
the same for several days in a row. Weather affects
people, the environment, the animals and the plants. It
also affects the clothes to wear and the food we eat. The
four weather conditions are sunny, rainy, cloudy, snowy,
and stormy. Weather will be communicated by using
symbols. Clouds are made of tiny water droplets that
stay together and float in the sky. They have different
shapes and sizes. Clouds help people identify the weather
for the day. There are four common types of clouds. The
Cirrus clouds, Cumulus clouds, Stratus clouds and
Nimbus clouds. Certain conditions must exist for clouds to
form- water vapor in the air, temperature change and
particles in the air.

Why is it important to learn about weather?

Being aware of the weather forecast allows us to dress
appropriately, plan outdoor activities, and make informed
decisions that can keep us safe and comfortable. Overall, having
knowledge about the weather enables us to better navigate our
daily lives and respond appropriately to any potential hazards.

Weather conditions and its definition

5
Weather can change in minutes or hours, and it's influenced by many
factors, including:
 Latitude
 Altitude
 Local and regional geography
 Jet streams
 Mountains
 Large bodies of water

Weather affects what people wear, what they build, and the
environment. Severe weather conditions include hurricanes, tornadoes,
blizzards, and droughts.
Weather is different from climate, which is the long-term average of
weather conditions in a given place. Climate is defined by the type,
frequency, duration, and intensity of weather events over decades to
centuries.

CHAPTER 2

Weather Instruments
When you predict future weather conditions, you are making a
weather forecast. Meteorologist are people who studies the
weather. They make weather forecasts by collecting and
analyzing data and measurements over a very wide area. The
basic tool of a weather forecast is a weather map.The weather
map is a map showing the weather condition over an area. Other
tools that are very helpful in collecting data about the weather are
the following: thermometer, wind vane, anemometer, barometer,
hygrometer rain gauge, hail pads, and Campbell strokes recorder.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical
Services Administration (PAGASA) is the government agency in
the country that studies weather and perform other meteorological
observations. It’s also informs the public about the weather
condition in the country.

Wind Vane
- is used to check the direction of the winds. Its pins on a
rod and points in the direction.

Barometer
- is a scientific instrument used to measure
atmospheric pressure, also called barometric
pressure.
7

Anemometer
- measures the direction and speed of wind in miles per hour.

Hygrometer
-is an instrument measures temperature and humidity using
degrees Celsius and degrees Fahrenheit.

Thermometer
-measures the high and low outdoor temperatures in degrees.
Fahrenheit and degrees Celsius.

Rain gauge

-measures the amount of rainfall. The

standard rain gauge consists of a long,
narrow cylinder capable of measuring rainfall
up to 8 inches.

Hail pad
-measures the size of hail that falls during the storm. The
standard hail pad consist of florist’s foam and aluminum
foil.

Campbell Strokes Recorder

-measures sunshine. Sunlight shines into one side of the glass
ball.
Weather satellites

-take pictures of earth’s cloud formation

every hour.

CHAPTER 3
What is the simple definition of clouds?

A cloud is a clump of water vapor that you can see in the sky. Clouds are
sometimes white and puffy, and other times so big and gray that they
completely block the sun. Clouds form when air rises and cools and the
moisture in it condenses into a visible form.
What can you see in the sky during a clear sunny day? They are called
clouds. Clouds are made of tiny water droplets that stay together and float
in the sky. They have different shapes and sizes. Clouds help people
identify the weather for the day.
1.Why is it important to learn about clouds?
Clouds are very important to learn, because it help us to make the Earth
habitable. Clouds can cool the planet by reflecting the sun's rays, or
warming the planet especially on cold cloudy nights.
2. How do clouds help us predict the weather?
Clouds are a key factor in predicting the weather because they indicate
atmospheric conditions, temperature, moisture, and wind.
3. What are clouds made of?
Clouds are made of water droplets or ice crystals, or a combination of both,
that are suspended in the air.
4. How do clouds form?
Clouds form when water vapor in the air condenses into water droplets or
ice crystals.

The different types of clouds and their characteristics:

Cirrus: High, wispy clouds.

11
Altocumulus: Medium level clouds

Stratus: Low, flat, and uniform clouds that can produce drizzle or light precipitation

Cumulus: Low, puffy clouds that look like cauliflower, popcorn, or cotton balls.

Nimbus: Rain-bearing clouds

Nimbostratus: Low to middle dark gray clouds with precipitation falling from them.

Cumulonimbus: Large clouds with dark bases and tall billowing towers that can
produce heavy rain and thunderstorms.

12
Cirrostratus: Transparent, whitish clouds that can form a halo around the sun or moon

SUMMARY

Weather is the short-term condition of the atmosphere, impacting daily

activities, travel, and agriculture. Varies with time of day, season, and
location. Includes rain, snow, sleet, or hail, critical for water resources.
Weather patterns are shaped by global forces such as the Earth's rotation,
ocean currents, and atmospheric pressure changes. These variations result
in different climates and weather phenomena, from calm sunny days to
extreme conditions like hurricanes and blizzards. Weather can change daily
and is influenced by the seasons. It affects our activities, clothing, and
safety. Scientists use tools like thermometers, rain gauges, and barometers
to measure and predict weather.
Clouds are made of water droplets or ice crystals that float in the air and
are formed when water vapor cools and condenses. Water evaporates from
the ocean or land, turning into water vapor. When the air rises, it cools and
can't hold as much water vapor, causing some of it to condense into water
droplets. these include cirrus, cirrocumulus, and cirrostratus clouds.
Appearance The thickness of a cloud determines how much moisture it
contains and how it appears. Thin clouds appear white, while thick clouds
appear dark gray. Factors that cause air to rise Air can rise due to surface
heating, topography, frontal, convergence, or turbulence.
Clouds are collections of tiny water droplets or ice crystals that form in the
atmosphere. They play a crucial role in weather by affecting temperature
and precipitation, clouds constantly change based on weather conditions,
making them an essential part of the atmosphere.
