STORAGE DEVICES
A storage device is any type of computing
hardware that is used for storing, porting
or extracting data files and objects.
Storage devices can hold and store
information both temporarily and
permanently. They may be internal or
external to a computer, server or
computing device.
There are two types of storage:
Primary Storage
Secondary Storage
Primary Storage
They are also called main memory. These
are used by the computer for its own use.
There are two types of primary storage
devices. They are ROM and RAM.
ROM (Read Only Memory)
ROM is a permanent storage device that
contains data that cannot be changed. This
is non- volatile.
This is usually called firmware which is a
set of instructions that tells the computer
what to do when it starts up.
Other ROM include:
PROM – Programmable Read Only
Memory.
This is a form of digital memory where the
contents can be changed once after
manufacture of the device. The data is then
permanent and cannot be changed.
EPROM – Erasable Programmable
Read Only Memory.
This is memory that does not lose its data
when the power supply is cut off. The data
can be erased and the chip reprogrammed
by shining an intense ultraviolet (UV) light
through a window designed into the
memory chip.
RAM (Random Access Memory)
RAM holds data that is currently being
processed by the computer. RAM is
volatile.
ACTIVITY – FILL IN THE BLANKS
Primary storage is also called _______.
There are two types of primary storage:
__________ and ___________.
________ is volatile memory, that is the
information is___________ when the
computer is turned off. __________ is
permanent and cannot be deleted.
SECONDARY STORAGE
A secondary storage device refers to any
non-volatile storage device that is internal
or external to the computer. It can be any
storage device beyond the primary storage
that enables permanent data storage. These
devices store programs and data for future
use.
