Math UN1101 Calculus I

Assignment 1
due: monday, september 16, 2024, before 11:59pm
submit the completed assignment to https://www.gradescope.com
only hand-written solutions are accepted

• This assignment has five mandatory questions and one optional question, worth a total of 20
points. It accounts for 3% of your final grade. The late submission deadline (no penalty) is
Monday, September 18, 11:59 pm. Submissions after the late due date will not be accepted.
• Collaboration is allowed, but you must write up your solutions independently and in your
own words. Copying from others, publications, or websites (even with minor changes) will be
treated as plagiarism.
• Neatness, clarity, and correct notation matter! Show all steps, use clear explanations, and
write in complete sentences where needed. Graders will only evaluate what you write, so unclear
or incomplete work will affect your grade, even with the correct answer.
• Attempt all questions (and parts), and clearly indicate which question you are answering. Match
your answers with the correct questions on Gradescope.

1. (a) [2p] Find the range of f (x) = 1 + 2 cos(πx) + 12 , algebraically.

Show all the steps. (Hint: start form the range of y = cos x.)
(b) [2p] Graph the function
1
f (x) = 1 + 2 cos(πx) + 2
by hand, not by plotting points, but by starting with the graph of y = cos x and then applying
the appropriate transformations.
Draw a new annotated plot for each transformation applied (six plots in all, including y = cos x).
223 Ra 31
2. The isotope has a half life of 3 days.

(a) [1p] Find an expression m = m(t) that models the mass of 223 Ra as function of time t in days.
(b) [1p] How long does it take for the mass to decay to 80% of the initial mass?
(c) [1p] Assuming that the initial mass is 200 mg, estimate the amount remaining after 31 days.
(d) [1p] Express the function m = m(t) found in part (a) as a transformation of the natural
exponential function.

3. Let f (x) =
e−x − 1
(a) [1.5p] Find the domain of f . Express your answer in interval notation.
(b) [1p] Find the inverse f −1 .
(c) [1.5p] Find the domain of the inverse f −1 . Express your answer in interval notation.

Show all the steps.

4. (a) [1.5p] Find the domain and range of the function f (x) = 2 arcsin(x2 − π).
(b) [1p] Find the exact value of cos−1 (cos(− 8π
3 )).
(c) [1.5p] Simplify the expression cot(2 arccos x).
Show all the steps.

5. Let f (x) = 2x + 1 and h(x) = .
x2 −x−2
(a) [1p] Find the domain and range of f and h. Find the inverse f −1 .
(b) [1.5p] Find a function g such that f ◦ g = h. What are the domains of f and g for the
composition f ◦ g = h to be well defined? Express your answer in interval notation.
(c) [1.5p] Find a function g such that g ◦ f = h. What are the domains of f and g for the
composition g ◦ f = h to be well defined? Express your answer in interval notation.

Hint: Use cancelation equations.

Optional (extra credit, complete solutions only - no partial credit)

BQ [2p] Let f be a strictly monotone function defined on an interval. Argue that f has an inverse f −1
and show that f −1 has the same monotonicity as f . That is, if f is strictly increasing then so is f −1
and if f is strictly decreasing then f −1 is strictly decreasing.

Good luck!
