INTRODUCTION
This page of the chapter showcases the problem and its setting. It includes the Background
of the Study, The Statement of the Problem, The Significance of the Study, Hypothesis, and
the Scopes and Delimitation of the study.

INTRODUCTION
Mosquito is always a problem on the Philippines. Its over 146,062 cases and 622 deaths in
the year January 1 – July 20 2019 (DOH available public data from unicef) . As likely solution to
combat the stated issues, the researchers formulated an organic product to combat the problem. the
potential of mint and oregano oil lamps as a Natural Mosquito Deterrents.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Mosquito-Borne diseases or diseases that spread from host to host are a big
problem around the world. This study intends to find out if processed Oregano
(Plectranthus amboinicus) and Lemongrass (Cymbopogon) natural extract can
be used as an inexpensive and environmentally friendly mosquito larvicidal
solution. Based in some studies Oregano (Plectranthus amboinicus), and
Lemongrass (Cymbopogon) contains natural chemical that can kill larvae in
their early stage. The researchers used two (2) set-ups with four (4) containers
including one (1) control group which will be the basis of the experiment, all
the containers are containing twenty (20) live mosquito larvae from the
Institute of Weed Science, Entomology and Plant Pathology (IWEP) of
University of the Philippines, Los Baños, Laguna. The researchers added
different concentrations and ratios of the solution in each container in this
experiment. As the experiment conducted, the results show that less than fifty
percent (50%) of the specimen was eliminated in the whole set-up, The
experiment revealed that Oregano and Lemongrass larvicide solution is not
enough to reach what this study aims for. Also, experiment results indicate that
Oregano and Lemongrass solution is not enough to kill the larvae of
mosquitoes. The researchers conclude that the Oregano (Plectranthus
amboinicus), and Lemongrass (Cymbopogon) larvicide solution is not
effective as an alternative mosquito (Culicidae) larvicide solution(Caraig et al.
(2023) . On the other hand, the harmful side effects of synthetic chemical
repellents with using directly on the human skin, to find safer alternatives will
be considered as a serious necessity. So, this study was aimed to determine the

repellency of oregano essential oil (Origanum vulgar) against this urban pest.
( Ismaeil Alizadeh , July 2017). gardeners use it as a plant to repel mosquitoes,
and others claim the essential oil is a mosquito repellent. Scientific evidence
to support this claim is scarce, but oregano does contain two chemicals with
known repellent properties, and because oregano is generally recognized as
safe ( Chris Dezeil , jun 27 , 2022) The peppermint essential oil is proved to be
efficient larvicide and repellent against dengue vector. Further studies are
needed to identify the possible role of oil as adulticide, oviposition deterrent
and ovicidal agent (Asian Pac J Trop Biomed. 2011 Apr). We tested the
product’s effectiveness in different areas; kitchen area and under the
dishwashing area. We observed that the aroma (smoke) spread in different
direction in each area where they were placed the incense. The number of
mosquito that died is noted as presented in our table of observation. To analyze
the data, Likert Scale and Percentage Scale were used with its corresponding
range. It was found that there is no significant difference in using the oregano
leaves as mosquito repellant as compared to the commercial brand. Thus,
oregano can be an alternative source for repelling mosquitoes (Dhaniel C.
Erasga (2019)). Mosquitoes pose a significant threat to public health,
transmitting diseases like dengue fever, dengue hemorrhagic fever, and yellow
fever. Controlling mosquitoes and personal protection is crucial for preventing
the transmission of these diseases. Chemical insecticide-based interventions
have been used in the past, but their frequent use has led to insecticide
resistance, ecosystem destabilization, and toxic effects on humans and non-
target organisms. There is an urgent need for new insecticides that are
environmentally safe, biodegradable, and target-specific against mosquitoes.
In recent years, researchers have reported the effectiveness of plant extracts or
essential oils as mosquito larvicides and repellents without posing hazards of
toxicity to humans. Several extracts and compounds from different plant
families have been evaluated to show promising larvicides. Repellentency
plays an important role in preventing vector-borne diseases by reducing man-
vector contact. Ethno-botanical studies show that in some village communities,
the use of plant repellents to reduce human vector contact is a common
practice.Essential oils, natural volatile substances found in various plants, have
received attention as potentially useful bioactive compounds against insects.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the subject of the study, research methods, instruments
used in gathering data and statistical tools used in data analysis.

METHODOLOGY
In the conducted study, researchers investigated the efficacy of an
oregano and mint oil lamp as an environmentally friendly approach for
mosquito control, emphasizing the application of quantitative methods.
Mosquitoes posed significant health risks as vectors for diseases such as
malaria, dengue fever, Zika virus, and West Nile virus, contributing to a
substantial global disease burden annually. These diseases ranged from mild
discomfort to severe illness, with profound long-term implications for affected
individuals and communities. With a rising interest in sustainable mosquito
control methods, the utilization of oregano and mint-based oil lamp had gained
traction. These traps exploited the attractive properties of oregano and mint to
entice mosquitoes, leveraging their innate attraction to specific olfactory cues.
The research methodology employed experiment techniques, including
controlled trials and statistical analyses, to evaluate oil lamp performance
comprehensively. The researchers observe the experiment within the subjects
and on the researchers product the potential of mint and oregano oil lamps as
a Natural Mosquito Deterrents. Interpretation of findings incorporated
variations in mosquito behavior, contextualized within the existing body of
literature on mosquito control strategies and ecological principles. Attention
was given to addressing potential study limitations to uphold the validity and
reliability of results. Research instruments utilized included mint and oregano
leaves, essential oils, glass containers, and wicks, among others, within a
systematic and controlled experimental framework.

DATA ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION

Base on the results l by the 1st prototype it has shown the product has lasted
for 2hrs more alongside its effectiveness by repelling mosquito. The 2nd
prototype even surpass the the longevity of the 1st by lasting for 5hrs more
this extension has also supported its effectiveness of repelling mosquito
unlike the commercial counterparts and lastly the reusability
The researchers also have trial and error when the wick is nylon and it turs
out it does not lit the nylon
On the first question, the first prototype lasted 2hrs, it is also effective in
repelling thw mosquito. And on second prototype it has lasted more than the
first prototype, along with its effect on repelling mosquito. Lastly the product
is estimated to last 3-8hrs and it’s effect on repelling mosquito had been
improved. Examining the longevity and effectiveness metrics across the
prototypes and the commercial product reveals intriguing insights. While the
commercial product boasts a broader longevity range of 3-8 hours, all
iterations exhibit effectiveness in repelling insects. This suggests that despite
variations in longevity, the core function of insect repellency remains
consistent across the different versions of the product. The assessment of
reusability across the prototypes and the commercial product highlights a
mixed picture. Both prototypes feature reusability, indicating a commitment
to sustainability and user convenience. However, the commercial product
deviates from this trend, lacking reusability. This departure may raise
concerns among environmentally conscious consumers and could impact the
product’s long-term viability and appeal in the market.

DISCUSSIONS
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS
Based on the results of the experiment, the findings were drawn:

1.) Mint and oregano oil lamps were proven to be efficient natural
mosquito repellents.
2.) The oil lamps demonstrated promise in repelling mosquitoes, indicating
their potential as natural alternatives to chemical-based repellents.
3.) The longevity of the wick duration proven to be dependent on how long
the wick are use.
4.) The resusability of the oregano oil is proven to be true approximate 5-
10 re-use (depending on the wick).
5.) Lastly, The researchers find the smell of the oregano make the
mosquito drowsy or very vulnerable to kill.
6.)

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the investigation into the potential of mint (menthol) and
oregano (Oreganum amboinicus) oil lamps as natural mosquito deterrents
shows promising results. These essential oils, when used in oil lamps, seem
to create an environment that discourages mosquitoes from entering or
staying nearby. However, further research and testing are necessary to
establish the most effective oil concentrations, lamp designs, and the
longevity of their repellent effects. By exploring these factors, we can
potentially develop a sustainable, eco-friendly, and cost-effective solution to
combat mosquito-borne diseases and discomfort caused by mosquito bites.
We researcher conclude that the mint and oregano oil lamps have a potential
as natural mosquito deterrents probably depends on the findings of the study.
If the oil were found to effectively repel mosquitoes, it could indicate a
promising alternative to synthetic repellents. However, if the result were
inconclusive or showed limited effectiveness, further research might be
needed to refine the method or explore other natural options.

RECOMMENDATION
1.) Based on the experiment, the researchers recommend using a wick that
are appropriate for the size of oil lamp. A wick that is not too thin as it
may be not enough and burn easily also not too thick as it may make
too much smoke. We also recommend to Choose a wick made from a
material that can absorb and transport the oil efficiently such as
Fiberglass wicks and cotton wicks.

2.) Based on the experiment, the researchers recommend using a blender or

food Processor to quickly and efficiently extract juices and aroma from
mint leaves. Along with a small amount of water, and blend until the
leaves are finely chopped and the desired consistency is achieved.

3.) Based on experiment, the researchers recommend to try other mint (

spearmint, lemon mint and etc)

gardeners use it as a plant to repel mosquitoes, and others claim the essential oil is a mosquito repellent.
Scientific evidence to support this claim is scarce, but oregano does contain two chemicals with known

Using of repellent components is recommended for personal protection against blood-sucking insects
currently. On the other hand, the harmful side effects of synthetic chemical repellents with using directly
on the human skin, to find safer alternatives will be considered as a serious necessity. So, this study was
aimed to determine the repellency of oregano essential oil (Origanum vulgar) against this urban pest. (

We tested the product’s effectiveness in different areas; kitchen area and under the dishwashing area. We
observed that the aroma (smoke) spread in different direction in each area where they were placed the
incense. The number of mosquito that died is noted as presented in our table of observation. To analyze the
data, Likert Scale and Percentage Scale were used with its corresponding range. It was found that there is
no significant difference in using the oregano leaves as mosquito repellant as compared to the commercial
brand. Thus, oregano can be an alternative source for repelling mosquitoesMosquitoes pose a significant
