1) Compute Arithmetic mean of following data.

Ages: 55, 43, 23, 12 ,44, 22, 42, 67, 78, 65, 88, 100, 19, 85, 43

 The formula to calculate mean of individual data is: -

Σx
X= N

The below image is a screenshot of output generated by SPSS software: -

This shows the mean of above data is 52.4.

2) Compute the median of the following data.
66 55 82 25 86 75 95 85 22 10
 The process to find the median of individual data manually is:
i) Arrange the data in ascending or descending order
ii) Find number of items in the data which will be n
iii) Find the position of median by using the formula size
Position of median=(n+1)/2
Thus, the item gives the value of median.
Note: - If n is an odd no. the median is the middle value. If n is even number
the median is the average of the two middle values.
Solving above problem using SPSS software: -
3) Find the mode from the data of marks obtained by 10 students.
Marks: 10, 27, 24, 12, 27, 20, 18, 15, 30, 27
 For finding mode, find the value occurring maximum number of times,
which will be your modal value.
Note:- If the data is bi-modal(two mode) of multi-modal(more than 2
mode), mode is ill defined. Then its value is calculated by a relation known
as Empirical relation which is: -
Mode=3 Median – 2 Mean
Finding mode of above data using SPSS software: -

As seen in above image, the mode of above data is 27.

4) Find range of following data: - 35, 40, 42, 45, 55, 60, 65
 A simple but crude measure of dispersion is the range which is defined as
the difference between maximum and minimum values in a given data.
Range=L-S
Results from SPSS: -

The range of above data is 30.

5) Find Q1, Q2, Q3 of the following data: -

50 77 95 42 55 63 2 12 59 100
 Quartiles are those values of the data which divide the series into four
equal parts. There are three quartiles, known as lower quartile, Median and
upper quartile, denoted by Q1, Q2, Q3 respectively.
Calculation of Quartiles: -
i) Arrange the data in ascending order
ii) Find no of item(n)
iii) Apply the formula for calculation of Quartiles

( )
n+1
Position of Qi= 4 ∗ⅈ ,where i=1,2,3

Thus, the obtained position gives the value of quartile.

Solving above problem using SPSS: -
Result obtained: -

Result is shown as percentiles of 25, 50, 75

As we know, Q1=P25 and Q2=P50 and Q3=P75
Thus, the values of Q1 is 34.50 and Q2 is 57 and Q3 is 81.5.
6) Find P1, P14, P20, P40, P55, P87, P91 of following data: -
50 77 95 42 55 63 2 12 59 100
 Percentiles are those values of the data which divide the total frequency
into hundred equal parts. There are 99 percentiles denoted by P 1, P2,….P99
letter.
Calculation of Percentiles: -
iv) Arrange the data in ascending order
v) Find no of item(n)
vi) Apply the formula for calculation of Percentiles

( )
n+1
Position of Pi= 100 ∗ⅈ ,where i=1,2……99

Thus, the obtained position gives the value of percentiles

Results obtained: -
7) Find standard deviation and variance of bacteria given below: -
Sample A B C D E F G H I J
No.
No. of 120 110 115 122 126 140 125 121 110 131
bacteria

 The standard deviation is the most important and widely used measure of
dispersion or variability.
Formula to calculate standard deviation of individual observations using
direct method is: -

√ ( )
2 2 2
∑x ∑x
σ= −
n n
Variance is the square of standard deviation.

Finding standard deviation and variance using SPSS: -

Thus, we can see above that standard deviation is 9.262 and variance is
85.778.
8) A part of the investigation of the collapse of the roof of a building, a
testing laboratory is given all the available bolts that connected the steel
structure at 3 different positions on the roof. The forces required to shear
each of these bolts are as follows:
Position 1 90 82 79 98 83 91
Position 2 105 89 93 104 89 95 86
Position 3 83 89 80 94
9) The following are the numbers of mistakes made in 5 successive days for
4 technicians working for a photographic laboratory:

14 9 12 12
10 12 7 8

wheat, each grown on 4 plots and state if the variety differences are
significant.
