1) What do you learn about the narrator’s childhood?


He lost both his parents in his infancy ,he was brought up by his
sister ,Mrs Joe Gargery , who married the local blacksmith .
2) Describe the man who met Pip in the church yard.
He was a big man ,dressed all in grey ,with an iron chain on his
leg .His clothes were wet and torn .He looked exhausted and
hungry.
3) In your point of view , would Pip obey the big man’s order?
and why?
I think Pip would obey the big man’s orders because he was so
frightened that if he did not bring him what he wants ,the big
man would cut his throat.

Comment
Comment: 1.’If you shout , I will cut your throat.

convict (bigman) said these words to a pip in the church yard


when he threatened him to cut his throat this showed that the
big man wanted pip to obey his orders and didn’t tell anyone
about him.
2- "She is out looking for you Pip !And she’s got the stick with
her!."
mr joe said these words to pip when he wanted to give him a
friendly warning as he was late and his sister searched for him
and she was angry this shows how kind is mr joe.

Chapter 2
1- Why did the convict confess to the officer that he is the one
who hasstolen the food from Blacksmith’s house? .
Because he wanted to protect Pip because if Mrs Joe discovered
the theft ,Pip would be punished.
2-Why did Pip run out of the room during the Christmas party?
He was afraid that they might discovered what he had done as
Mrs Joe was about to bring the meat Pie which had been stolen
by him .
3 –Why did Pip feel uncomfortable during the Christmas lunch?

Because Pip did not like the guests as they never left him in
peace;they looked unpleasantly at him and he was not allowed
to speak .They also gave him the worst pieces of meat.
Comment:
1- "I want him to suffer more back in the prison ship."

The big man said these words to the officer in the marshes
when he got arrested by the soldiers .He was talking about the
second convict .It shows how much the big man hates the
second convict .He did not kill him because he wants him to
suffer more in prison.
2- " We don’t know why you’re a convict ,but we wouldn’t want
you to die of hunger."
Joe said these words to the big man when the big man
confessed that he had stolen some food from blacksmith’s
house. It shows how kind hearted is Joe that he has forgiven
him .

Chapter 3

1 –Why did Pip feel like a dog?


Because Estella put the bread and meat down on the ground then she laughed
at him when tears came to his eyes and pushed him out of the gate.

2-Why did Pip confess to Joe about the truth?


Because Pip loved and trusted him .He wanted to relief himself because he felt
uncomfortable and unhappy at Mrs Havisham’s house.
3-How was Miss Havisham dressed
She was wearing an old wedding dress made of rich material .She had a
bride’s flowers in her white hair. She only had one white shoe on.

Comment
1-“My father drank a lot ,and when he drank ,he used to hit my
mother..”
Joe said these words to Pip while they were talking in Mrs Joe’s house .It
shows how much Joe suffered when he was a child.

2-‘Now if you teach me a bit …Mrs .Joe must never know”


Joe said these words to Pip .Joe warned pip to be careful and not tell Mrs Joe
that he was learning.It shows that how much his love and respect to mrs Joe
made him coward and afraid of telling her anything.

Chapter 4
1-What happened to Pip in Miss Havisham’s garden?
Pip met a pale young gentleman with fair hair .They fought together for no reason .He
pulled Pip’s hair but Pip knocked him down and won the fight

2-Why did Joe refuse to speak to Miss Havisham directly , but


spoke only to Pip? .
Because Joe was shocked when he entered miss Havisham’s room .The darkness ,the
candles,the dust ,the ancient furniture ,the old lady in her bride’s dress –it was almost too
much for Joe’s limited intelligence.

3-Describe Miss Havisham’s room?

All the furniture was covered in dust .There was a long table in the middle of the room .It
was a large yellow shape ,with hundreds of insects feeding off it .
Comment:

1-“Because I will never cry for you a gain ”


Pip said these words to Estella answering her after she asked him why did not he cry when
she slapped him hard at Miss Havisham’s house . It showed that he was crying inside and
decided to be stronger. They were at Miss Havisham’s house .It showed how much he
cried, but he was crying inside for her . He decided to change himself and be stronger.

2- “Break men’s hearts and have no mercy.”


Miss Havisham said these words to Estella at Miss Havisham’s house. It shows that
missHavisham suffered a lot and she wanted to take the revenge from all men .

Chapter 5
1- Pip is always afraid of Estela’s opinion of him . Discuss
He thought of Estella all of the time.His worst fear was that one day Estella see
him working with black face and hands as a common Blacksmith.he studied
as hard as he could for her.He was ashamed of Joe because of her.

2-How was Pip effected by Miss Havisham’s and Estela’s meeting?


Before pip went to miss Havisham’s and met Estella,he had always been
happy at home with Joe but after meeting them he became miserable and
ashamed of his home and work.

3-Pip has different feelings towards Biddy .Illustrate


Although pip realized how much happier he would always be with Biddy than
with Estella ,he still love and admire Estella.He couldn’t make himself fall in
love with Biddy however Biddy was the most sensible of girls.
Comments

1-“ You fool !you think you’re a rich man ,giving a holiday to a lazy
man. ”
Mrs Joe said these words to Joe at the forge when Orlick asked for a half -
day holiday .It shows that Mrs Joe is a greedy impolite woman because she
mistreated her husband and the worker in his forge.

2- “That’s may be true, but I can’t stop myself admiring her .”


Pip said these words to Biddy .It shows that he loves Estella so much even
if she does not deserve this love.

Chapter 6 – Great Expectations

Answer the following questions:


1-Who was Mr. Jaggers, and what did he tell Joe and Pip?
Mr. Jaggers was a lawyer and he told them that he was sent by someone
who wanted Pip to be removed from his home and to be educated as a
gentleman who expected to inherit a fortune.

2- What were the two conditions that the lawyer must have asked
Pip to follow?
The first one was that he always used the name of Pip.

The second was that the name of the benefactor must have been remained
a secret until he chose to tell him. Pip was forbidden to ask any questions
about that person.
3- Who do you think was Pip’s benefactor? Why?
(Student’s own answer)

- Suggested answer: I think that the first convict was Pip’s benefactor,
because he wanted to help Pip as he helped him before and brought him
some food and a metal file.

Comment
1- '' Don’t you think you could teach Joe a bit?"
Pip said that to Biddy when they were walking through the church yard to
the marshes before Pip’s traveling to London and he asked Biddy to teach
Joe. This shows that Pip thought that Joe’s manners and education must
have been improved to be suitable enough for his new position as a young
gentleman.

2- ''My dream had come true. Miss Havisham was making me rich!''
Pip said that to Mr. Jaggers and Joe when Mr. Jaggers told him that he was
sent by someone to make him as a gentleman who expected to inherit a
fortune. This shows that Pip thought that Miss Havisham was the
benefactor who would make him rich.
Chapter 7 – Pip arrives in London
Answer the following questions:
1- Why was Pip surprised when he arrived in London for the first time?
He was surprised as he found it rather ugly with narrow dirty streets and
people crowded into tiny houses. He was frightened by its huge size. At
Smith field, the meat market, he was shocked by the dirt and blood
everywhere.

2- What did Herbert Pocket tell Pip about Miss Havisham and
Estella?
He told him that Miss Havisham brought Estella up to break men’s hearts as
a revenge of all men. He didn’t want to marry Estella as she was a hard and
proud girl.
3- In your point of view, do you sympathize with the sad story of
Miss Havisham that Herbert told Pip about?
(Student’s own answer)
Suggested answer: Yes, I sympathized with the sad story of Miss
Havisham as she was in love with a man whom she gave as much
money as he wanted, and who left her in the wedding day

- after all the preparations of wedding. In addition, people thought that


her half-brother had sent the man to get money from her, then they
shared the profits.
Comment
1- "Would you mind my calling you Handel?"

Herbert said that to Pip Pocket when they met for the second time and
Herbert spoke with him openly and asked him to call him Handel. This
shows that the relation between Pip and Herbert became very well and
they became good friends.
2- "Which she received at twenty to nine, when she was dressing
for the wedding?"
Pip said that to Herbert when Herbert told him the sad story of Miss
Havisham, and how the man she loved deeply didn’t come for the wedding
day and he wrote a letter. This shows that Pip began to understand the
reason of the strange actions of Miss Havisham and he began to sympathize
with her.

Chapter 8
Visiting MrWemmick and MrJaggers

Answer the following questions:

1-What did Pip think about his teacher, Mr. Pocket?

He thought that he was always a kind and a helpful teacher.

2- Who were the two gentlemen studying at Mr. Pocket’s? Give a brief note
about them.

Bentley Drummle who came from a rich family living in the country. He
was lazy, proud, mean and stupid. Startop who was a pleasant sensitive
young man.

3- What were the strange things that Mr. Wemmick told Pip about
Mr. Jaggers?
First, MrJaggers had a strange house keeper who was like a wild animal
butMrJaggerstrained her.

Second, he was stronger, cleverer and more complicated than anyone else
in London.

Third, he never locked his doors or windows at night.


Comment
1- "Isn’t he ever robbed.”
Pip said that in surprise to Wemmick when he told him that MrJaggers
never locked his doors or windows at night. This shows that Pip was so
surprised at Mr. Jaggers’ strange actions.

2- “She is stronger than any of you. Molly, show them your wrists.”
MrJaggers said that to Pip, Startop and Drummle, Herbert when they were
having dinner at MrJaggers’ house and when Drummle said that he was the
strongest one. This shows that MrJaggers was thoughtless and didn’t care
about his housekeeper’s feeling.

Chapter 9 – A visit from Joe


Answer the following questions:
1. What did Biddy tell Pip in her letter? What was his reaction?
She told him that Joe would be in London and visit him at 9 o’clock on
Tuesday morning at Mr Herbert Pocket’s room. She also hoped that he
wouldn’t refuse to see him. When Pip knew about Joe’s visit, he didn’t look
forward to seeing him at all.

2-Why didn’t Pip welcome Joe’s visit?


Because he knew that his clothes, his manners and uneducated way of
speaking would make him ashamed of him.

3-Why did Joe come to visit Pip? What was his reaction?
He visited him as he had a message for him from Miss Havisham. She asked
him to come home to see Estella when Pip knew the message, he became
so happy and he decided to visit Miss Havisham as soon as possible.
Comment
1) “I am wrong in these clothes and I’m wrong in London but I’m
fine at the forge.”
Joe said that to Pip when he came to visit him in London at Mr Herbert
Pocket’s room, and to tell him a message from Miss Havisham. Joe felt that
Pip was ashamed of him, so he said that. This shows that Joe felt
uncomfortable in London and Pip had changed.

2) “She’s changed very much, hasn’t she?”

Miss Havisham said that to Pip when he came to her house and he saw
Estella. This show that Miss Havisham wanted to make sure that Pip was
still in love with Estella.

Chapter 10 – Pip and Herbert talk about love


Answer the following questions:

1. What secret did Pip tell his friend, Herbert about? What was
Herbert’s reaction?
He told him that he was in love with Estella but Herbert wasn’t surprised
and he told Pip that he had already known that and it was clear. He asked
him if Estella admired him or not.

2- Who is Carla? And what did Herbert tell Pip about her?
Clara was the lady that Herbert loved. She lived with her father as her
mother died. Herbert told Pip that they must keep their feelings for each
other secret because he didn’t have enough money to marry her.
Comment
1. “I know you’re right, but I can never stop loving her.”
Pip said that to Herbert when Pip told Herbert about his love to Estella, but
Herbert was worried about him and he advised him to think of Estella and
how unhappy he might have been with her. This shows that Herbert was so
worried about his friend because of his love for Estella.
