Lecture 1 Linear Approximations

The document discusses the concept of differentiability at a point and the use of linear approximations in calculus. It defines differentiability, provides the formula for linearization of a function at a point, and includes examples of finding linear approximations for specific functions. The focus is on how linearization can be used to approximate values of functions near a given point.

Linear Approximations (Calculus 2)
Differentiability at a point
f is differentiable at the point x  a :

• f '(a ) exists

• The curve of f has a tangent line at the point x  a with slope

equal to f '(a )
• For points that are close to x  a the curve and the tangent line
are close to each other so as to be almost indistinguishable as
one zooms in closer and closer

Linear Approximations
• For a differentiable function f at the point x  a the linear
function
L( x)  f (a )  f '( a)( x  a)
is the linearisation of f at the point x  a

• One uses the linearisation to approximate values of the function
