LEARNING JOURNEY
Design Thinking in Action
Use the template below to practice applying the steps of the Design Thinking model to address
a real-life challenge. After completing it, share it with your leader or team and expand on it to
find an adequate solution to the challenge.

Identify a challenge
It could be something big such as improving sanitation in your area or enhancing
communication in disaster-stricken areas. Or it could be smaller such as
improving a service you provide to the people you serve, or a process that takes
too long to do at work.

Empathise
Research the chosen challenge. If possible, interview people affected by this
challenge or refer to first-hand documents that refer to it.

Define
Clearly articulate the problem, emphasising the pain points and needs of the
affected community.

Ideate
Brainstorm potential solutions. The sky is the limit!

Prototype
Prioritise your ideas and sketch or describe in detail a tangible solution. Think
about how it would work, who would need to create it, and what materials and
resources might be needed.

Test
Share your prototype with your beneficiaries, colleagues or friends and gather
feedback. Refine your solution based on the feedback.
