IMPORTANCE OF PHILOSOPHY IN PSYCHOLOGY
First, it is of utmost importance to define what is philosophy? For the Rev. University
Philosophy Costa Rica (2020) based on Jean-François Pradeau who brings together
the ideas of Plato and Aristotle, philosophy is then defined as the desire to know, to
know everything and to be able to experience it, to live it for oneself, it is nothing
more than the wise and extravagant ambition to know every aspect of life. It is also
important to define psychology, according to the Cambridge Dictionary of Psychology
(2009). It is the study of the mind, consciousness, perception, motivation, behavior
and biology of the nervous system, relating it to the mind, in turn making use of
scientific methods for the study of the mind, cognition, social interactions in relation to
the mind, individual differences and application of these approaches in practical
problems in organization, commerce, and mainly the relief of suffering.
To delve into the central theme, I must cite the definition of psychology, by the RAE,
"Part of philosophy that deals with the soul, its faculties and operations", this
suggests that philosophy and psychology are not separate concepts, even philosophy
is popularly known as the mother of all sciences, which is why psychology comes,
partly from it, according to Barria, C. Philosophy supports psychology in two ways:
one from the respective hypotheses regarding the mind and its study, this is based on
the fact that as it was defined at the beginning, being that psychology studies the
mind, the first concepts and studies about psychology were provided by
psychologists and theologians oriented precisely to the study of minds, this provided
by the etiology of psychology itself, "psyché" which means soul and logos which
means science, which is why it is known as "science of the soul." The ancient
philosophers began with the study of the soul, of humanity itself, since the ideologies
or beliefs that at that time came from the divinities were left aside, the need for
knowledge drove them to see more within themselves, to seek knowledge, from there
begins the study of the soul, a study that over time gave way to psychology, even
being reflected especially in humanistic psychology that focuses on understanding
how human beings experience the world.
Continuing with the other way in which philosophy supports psychology, and this
connects with the first since the need of ancient philosophers to understand and
comprehend human behavior in its biological dimension, therefore it is important to
emphasize that they are not separate concepts but one is part of the other, given that
psychology based many of its facts, if not all, on the first studies that were carried out
thanks to philosophers who sought to understand the human mind, giving way to
future research that classified it as a science.
Likewise, philosophy has contributed to psychology in the areas that it studies, such
as sensation, perception, intelligence, memory and will, therefore it is evident that
both share the object of study, however the manner and methods they use are what
differ, in addition to the responses they obtain and the purposes of it, since while for
philosophy they are merely intellectual purposes and for the love of knowledge, while
psychology uses this knowledge in order to apply it for intervention and therapy.
