Jamie and her family are going to camp at the

seaside for the December holidays. lt is very dark
in the evenings and so she decided io make
recyclable flashlights for the whole family. She
came across a very cool idea on youtube.

The casing of her flashlights consists mainly of

plastic bottles.

Jamie needs your help to design a circuit for her,

so that she knows how to put the components
together. The circuit must consist of the following

QUESTION B

Read the case study below and answer the questions that follow

Electricity increases in South Africa

ln 2024, South Africa experienced a signiflcant increase in electricity tariffs,

causing wider concern among rural citizens and businesses This increase
was m;inly attributed to the ongoing challenges faced by Eskom, the country's
Drimarv electricitv supplier. Eskom is struggling with outdaied infraslructure,
iising iuet prices and financial pressures, all of which have contributed to the
rising cost of electricily production.

The new tariff adjustment is aimed at stabilising Eskom's financial situation

and improving its'services. However, this means challenges for consumers,
especially thole in lower-income groups, who bear the brunt of higher utility
costs. Miny households are now obliged to adiust their energy consumption
habits to cope with the inQrease.

ln response, the government is encouraging energy saving practices. and

exploring renewable energy options to reduce dependence on Eskom
lniiiativei such as installing solar panels and energy-efficient appliances are
becoming increasingly popular as citizens try to manage their electricity bills
Overall, ihe electricity increase highlights the urgent need for a susiainable
energy strategy in South Africa that balances economic gro\ "th, affordability
and environmental responsibility

8.5.1 Explain the safety risks of iLlegal electricity connections. (3)

Suggest a way in which these illega connections can be teduced

or prevented. (1)

OUESTION 9

Read the case study below and answer the questions that follow

Electrochemical cells

Batteries are essentlal for powering various devices, but their

environmental irnpact can be signlficant. When batteries are incorrectly
disposed of, toxic matetia s such as ead cadmium and ithium can leach
into the ground and watel1l/ays, harming wild ife and contaminating
ecosystems.

As the world increasingly relies on battery technology for electronics and

electric vehicles, the rise of electronic waste (e-waste) is becoming an
urgent issue. E-waste often ends up in landfills, where hazardous
substances pose serious health risks to communities and the environment.
Correct recycling and disposal of batteries and e-waste is crucial to
minimize their harmful effects and protect our planet for future generations.

However. there is still little knowledge about this as well as the provision of
specific places where this recycling can take place.
