Sample Workbook

The document outlines project management techniques for estimating project timelines and critical paths in construction projects. It provides examples of both a commercial steel building and a residential home construction project, detailing tasks, durations, and the need for PERT/CPM charts. The goal is to demonstrate the benefits of structured project management over relying solely on personal experience for project time estimation.

A Construction Firm

At your current firm, the CEO insists he can estimate the total project
time based solely on his personal experience. You aim to convince him
that adopting project management techniques will yield more
accurate and efficient results.

To illustrate your point, you present a simple example of a commercial

steel building construction project with eight steps. Using this, you
create a hypothetical work breakdown structure:

- Prepare the site (3 days), followed by setting the building

footers (3 days).
- Finish the foundation (5 days), and then assemble the building
(3 days).
- Once the building is assembled, start two tasks simultaneously:
- Finish the interior work (5 days).
- Set up an appointment for the final building inspection (15
days).
- After the interior work is complete, begin two more tasks
simultaneously:
- Landscaping (7 days).
- Driveway paving (3 days).
- Once the landscaping, driveway paving, and final inspection are
complete, proceed to arrange the sale (2 days).

Tasks:
Calculate the total project time.
Identify the critical path.
Create a PERT/CPM chart to visualize the project timeline.
A Residential Home Construction Project

You have a client who wants a clear schedule for the construction of
their residential house. To ensure a smooth process and prevent
delays, you decide to identify the critical points of the project using
project management techniques.

To illustrate this, you present a simplified example of a residential

home construction project with eight steps. The hypothetical work
breakdown structure is as follows:

- Clear the land (4 days), then proceed to lay the foundation (5

days).
- Construct the frame of the house (6 days), followed by
installing the roof (4 days).
- Once the roof is installed, start two tasks at the same time:
- Install utilities (plumbing and electrical) (7 days).
- Order final inspections (10 days).
- After utilities are installed, begin two tasks simultaneously:
- Complete interior finishes (6 days).
- Landscape the yard (5 days).
- Once the interior finishes, landscaping, and final inspection are
completed, proceed to handover the keys to the owner (3 days).

Tasks:
Calculate the total time required to complete the project.
Identify the critical path.
Develop a PERT/CPM chart to visualize the project’s timeline.
