Basic Concepts:
Y A
M
● Equation: An algebraic expression with ‘equal to’(=) sign is called the equation. It is an
B R
algebraic expression of equality.
S A
Example: 4x=5, 3y-4=5, 3x+4y=5 etc.
● Linear Equation: If the greatest exponent of the variables in an equation is one, the equation is
H
said to be a linear equation.
H
Example: 3x-4=2, 4x+6y=7 etc.
T S
● Linear Equation in One Variable: An equation of the form ax+b=0, where a, b are real numbers
A H
and a≠0 is called linear equation in one variable.
Example: 2x+7=0.
● Linear Equation in Two Variables’: An equation of the form ax+by+c=0, where a, b and c are
M S
real numbers where a, b≠0 is called linear equation in two variables.
E
Example: 9x-2y+3=0
● Solution of an Equation: That value/values of variable/variables used in equation, which make(s)
G
two sides of equation equal or satisfy the equation is called solution of the equation.
Example: For equation 3x-4=2 , x=2 is a solution.
R
For equation 5x-2y=4, (x,y)=(2,3) is one of solutions.
U
Pair of Linear Equations in Two Variables: Two linear equations of the form ax+by+c=0
taken together form a pair of linear equations in two variables.
D
Example: 2x-3y+4=0 and 3x+5y-7=0.
● Solutions of Linear equation in Two Variables: The values of x and y satisfying each one of
the given pair of linear equation is called their solutions.
Example: The solution of pair of linear equations
2x+3y-8=0 and 5x-2y-9=0 is x=1,y=2

S A
1. Solve : the following pair of linear equations:
3x – 5y = 4,
H H
2y + 7 = 9x.
Sol- Given, 3x – 5y = 4.....(1),
T S
9x - 2y = 7 .....(2)
Multipy eq (1) by 3 and eq (2) by 1 and subtracting eq (2) from (1) we get
M S
−5
i.e. -13y = 5 ⸫y= 13
−5 9
E
Then put y = 13
in eq. (1) then We get x = 13
9 −5
G
Ans : x = 13, y =
13
2. Five years hence, the age of Jacob will be three times that of his son. Five years ago, Jacob’s
R
age was seven times that of his son. What are their present ages?
U
Sol- Let the present age of Jacob and his son be x and y respectively.
According to the question,
(x + 5) = 3(y + 5)
D
Or, x – 3y = 10 …………………………………….. (1)
Or, (x – 5) = 7(y – 5)
Or,x – 7y = -30 ………………………………………. (2)
From (1), we get x = 3y + 10 ……………………. (3)
Substituting the value of x in (2), we get
3y + 10 – 7y = -30
Or,-4y = -40
⸫ y = 10 ………………… (4)
Substituting the value of y in (3), we get
x = 3 x 10 + 10 = 40
Hence, the present age of Jacob’s and his son is 40 years and 10 years respectively.
3. Raman’s age is three times he sum of the ages of his two sons. After 5 years his age will be
twice the sum of the ages of his two sons. Find the age of Raman.
Sol- Let x be the present age of Raman's and y be the present ages of sum of his two sons.
ATQ,
x = 3y -----(1)
A
After 5 years :
Raman's age = x + 5
Y
The sum of the ages of his two sons = y + 5 + 5
M
= y + 10
ATQ,
B R
x + 5 = 2(y + 10)
Or ,x + 5 = 2y + 20
S A
Or ,x - 2y = 20 - 5
Or, x - 2y = 15 --------(2)
By applying the value of x in (2), we get
H
3y - 2y = 15 {from eqn 1}
H
⸫ y = 15
T
Put the value of y in eqn (1) x = 3(15)
S
⸫ x = 45
Answer : So, Raman present age is 45 years old.

4. The middle digit of a number between 100 and 1000 is zero and the sum of the other digit is 13. If
the digits are reversed, the number so formed exceeds the original number by 495. Find the number.
E
Sol-The required number will be in the form X 0 Y
Middle digit = 0
G
x + y = 13 -------(1)
Y 0 X = X0Y + 495
100y + x = 100x + 1y + 495
R
x - 100x + 100y - y = 495
-99x + 99y = 495
U
-x + y = 5 -------(2)
x = y-5
By applying the value of x in (1), we get
D
y - 5 + y = 13
2y = 13+5
2y = 18
y = 9
When y = 9,
x = 9-5
x = 4
So, the required number is 409.
5. Solve 2x + 3y = 11 and 2x – 4y = – 24 and hence find the value of ‘m’ for which y = mx + 3.
Sol- 2x + 3y = 11…………………………..(I)
2x – 4y = -24………………………… (II)
From equation (II), we get
x = (11-3y)/2 ………………….(III)
Substituting the value of x in equation (II), we get
2(11-3y)/2 – 4y = 24
11 – 3y – 4y = -24
-7y = -35
y = 5……………………………………..(IV)
Putting the value of y in equation (III), we get
A
x = (11-3×5)/2 = -4/2 = -2
Hence, x = -2, y = 5
Y
Also,
M
y = mx + 3
B R
5 = -2m +3
-2m = 2
m = -1
S A
Therefore the value of m is -1.
H
6. The sum of numerator and denominator of a fraction is 3 less than twice the denominator. If
H
each of the numerator and denominator is decreased by 1, the fraction becomes ½. Find the
T
fraction.
S
Solution: Let the numerator be x and denominator be y.
A H
Let the fraction be x/y
ATQ,
M S
x+y+3=2y
⇒x−y=−3
x=y−3 ………(i)
E
Also,
(x-1)/(y-1) = ½
G
⇒ (x-1) = (y-1)/2
⇒2x=y−1+2=y+1
2x−y=1 …………..(ii)
R
Substituting (i) in equation (ii), we get;
2(y−3)−y=1
⇒2y−6−y=1
U
⇒y=7
Now, put y=7 in (i) we get;
D
x=7−3=4
Thus, x=4,y=7
Therefore, the required fraction is 4/7.
6x + 2y = 3 and kx + y = 2

Ques-2 Solve the following system of equation by substitution method: x + y = 14 and x – y = 4
SOLUTION: Equations are x + y = 14 ……… (i) x – y = 4 ………(ii)
from equation (ii) find x in term of y x = y + 4 ……… (iii)
substitute this x in (i), we get (y + 4) + y = 14, or 2y + 4 = 14, or 2y = 14 – 4
or 2y = 10 or y = 10/2 , or y = 5
Now from equation (iii) we find the value of x with the help of (y = 5) x = 5 + 4 = 9
Thus, x = 9 and y = 5
Ques3 Solve the following system of equation by elimination method: 2x + y = 24 and x –2y = 7
Solution: Given equations are
2x + y = 24 ……… (i), x –2y = 7 ………(ii)
Here, if we multiply by 2 in equation (i) and adding with equation (ii), we get
4x + 2y = 48 ……… (i) ,x - 2y = 7 ……(ii), 5x = 55, Or x = 55/5, Or x = 11
Now, in equation (i) putting the value of x to find y
2 x 11 + y = 24 Or 22 + y = 24 Or y = 24 – 22 Or y = 2 , Thus, x = 11 and y = 2

Y
Solution: Rearrange the given equation in general form 2x + 3y - 5 = 0 and 4x + ky – 10 = 0
a1 2 b1 3 c1 5
M
By comparing we get, , ,
