Strengthening ASEAN and ROK Relations
Social Capital, Regionalism and Development in Indo-Pacific
Entering the last few decades, the Indo-Pacific region continues to be the subject of debate
between various countries regarding how to influence this region not only in the context of
economic development, trade but also socio-cultural and political aspects. This is unavoidable
for the areas in this region, because it is a meeting of various national and international interests
which greatly determine the direction and strategy for the development of this region in the
present and future. In this regard, what and how the role of the community at the local level is
in responding to the development of contestation occurring in this region does not appear to
have been widely implemented.
This is understandable because the social science and humanities studies carried out are
still local in nature, they have not been carried out comprehensively and comparatively with
regard to how connectivity and interconnectivity between regions occurs. In fact, mutual
understanding of both sides is very necessary in the context of understanding regional
development which can be used as a lesson learned for communities, nations and countries in
the Indo-Pacific region.
In the landscape of dynamic and evolving global alliances, the relationship between the
Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Republic of Korea (below Korea) stands
out as a compelling narrative of partnership, cooperation, and shared aspirations. This strategic
engagement, born out of historical ties and a mutual commitment to regional stability and
economic progress, has witnessed remarkable growth and transformation over the years.
Against this backdrop the Korea Institute for ASEAN Studies, Busan University of Foreign
Studies (KIAS-BUFS) and the International Federation of Social Science Organizations
(IFSSO) are collaborating as leading scientific institutions to organize this international
conference. The conference invites institutions to submit panel proposals on any topics related
