1. FUNCTIONS OF COMMUNICATION
Communication as a human activity always serves a function. Functions of communication refer to how humans use
language for different purposes.
BASIC FUNCTIONS OF COMMUNICATION

KINDS OF TALKS OR ORAL TEXTS


1. SMALL TALK
It is a form of non-threatening communication that may be used to affect social interaction.
This kind of talk can help achieve the following specific purposes:

2. LIGHT-CONTROL TALK
It may be used to motivate people. This kind of talk can help achieve the following specific purposes:

3. HEAVY-CONTROL TALK
Designed to place blame and to control or regulate people. This type of communication creates
defensiveness on the part of the receiver and is rarely, if ever, appropriate. This kind of talk can help achieve
the following specific purposes:
~ to blame ~ to attack ~ to threaten ~ to coerce

4. SEARCH TALK
Another non-threatening approach when you want to gather data or the consensus of others to be able
to provide information. This kind of talk can help achieve the following specific purposes:
~ to examine and clarify the issue ~ to ask and inquire about something

5. STRAIGHT TALK
It may be used to facilitate emotional expression. This kind of talk can help achieve the following
specific purposes:
~ to share feelings ~ to acknowledge feelings ~ to accept without judging
TAKE NOTE:
Social interaction can be achieved through small talk;
Motivation of people can be done by means of light-control talk;
Regulation or control can be affected by engaging in heavy-control talk;
Information can be provided using search talk;
Emotional expression can be attained through straight talk.

DEVELOPING MASTERY
Activity 3: Analyze the communication situations below and identify which function of communication is evident.
1. Due to the increase in smuggled goods, the President ordered the Bureau of Customs to improve their policies on the receiving
of imported goods.
2. Mother wants her daughter to improve her talent in painting and so she bought her a set of paint and brush and told her,

Activity 5: Look back at your five (5) most memorable instances in communicating with other people. Then, identify what function of
communication and type of oral text was evident in that situation, and write your insights about it. Follow the given table in organizing
your answers.
