Brain Awareness Week Celebration

ABOUT THE INSTITUTION

Ahmedabad Medical School was created in 1871 and it became


affiliated with the Civil Hospital in the city of Ahmedabad. The
School had humble beginnings, starting with 14 students who
pursued hospital assistant training. In 1879, Sir Byramjee
Jeejeebhoy donated Rs.20,000/- and the school was renamed
after him as B. J. Medical School. The school grew and became
affiliated with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Bombay
in 1917.

By 1946, the school obtained affiliation with Bombay University


and then achieved higher status for itself to become B.J. Medical
College, providing diplomas for L.C.P.S. In 1951, The college was
affiliated to Gujarat University for its undergraduate courses.
The postgraduate courses were affiliated to the Gujarat
University in 1956.

The Gujarat University took over the school, which today


flourishes with other allied medical and paramedical
institutions, including:
M & J Institute of Ophthalmology
The Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute
TB Demonstration and Training Centre
U. N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology
ABOUT BJMC NEURAL NETWORK

BJMC Neural Network is a student initiative formed under the


guidance of Dr. Minakshi Parikh, Director of Postgraduate
Education, B.J. Medical College, Ahmedabad. It is a multi-
disciplinary, collaborative program spanning through all
undergraduate years of the institute.
The aim of the initiative is to encourage dialogue and inculcate
curiosity about Neuroscience and give the passion of medical
students a road map of possibilities for the future.
Till date, BJMC Neural Network has organised student
discussion sessions, clinical examination series and clinical
case discussion and it looks forward to host the Brain
Awareness Week celebrations with fervent academic vigour.
ABOUT BRAIN AWARENESS WEEK

Brain Awareness Week is a global campaign increasing


awareness of the general masses about the brain and the
current developments in brain research.

It was conceptualised by the Dana Foundation with the idea to


educate the public about diagnosis, treatment and prevention of
neurological ailments and is organised in the month of March by
the foundation every year, encouraging international
collaborations.

The theme for Brain Awareness Week 2025 is ‘Focus on Brain


Health’.

In consideration of the theme, BNN is celebrating the Brain


Awareness Week in B.J. Medical College with the aim of:

·Boosting awareness and sensitising medical students about


disorders of the brain and the mind
·Strengthening academic interest in the field of Neurology and
Psychiatry
·Encouraging peer support and building a network of students
interested in the fields
·Establishing a culture of constant interaction and growth of
Neuroscience enthusiasts

COMMUNITY OUTREACH
PROGRAMME

A joint venture of BNN and SOS BJMC


Educating children aged 12 years and above at Manavs
Setu, a part of NGO Manav Sadhna
Topic: Neurological First Aid and Mental Health Awareness
Neurological first aid session includes conditions like
stroke, seizures, syncope, dementia and traumatic brain
injury
Mental health awareness session includes information
about substance use and addiction, academic stress and
general mental health support

Cases should be related to Neurosciences (Neuro-

following subheadings: Title, Brief History, Diagnosis
(within 1000 words)

Speaker : Dr. Arvind Sharma


Date : 10th March 2025

Dr. Arvind Sharma is the head of Department of Neurology


and a Sr. Consultant Neurologist, Stroke Specialist and
Neurosonologist at Zydus Hospitals, Ahmedabad. He has
been the Member Board of Directors, World Stroke
Organisation since 2022 and Secretary Indian Stroke
Association since 2021. Dr. Sharma has received many
honours and awards such as Travel Award APSC 2012
issued by Asia Pacific Stroke Congress, Tokyo, Japan;
McKinney Award, American Society of Neuroimaging, 2011
and more.

Dr. Minakshi Parikh is a renowned psychiatrist with


experience of over 30 years. She is currently the Director of
Postgraduate Education in BJ Medical College ansd Civil
Hospital, Ahmedabad and is also the Professor and Head at
Department of Psychiatry. She also serves as President to
Ahmedabad Jung Centre, a developing group of International
Association of Analytical Psychology which has flourished
under her leadership and guidance. She is also a Jungian
psychoanalyst.
