Lab+Manual+ +Part+4

The document discusses the fundamentals of genetics, including the roles of genes, alleles, and inheritance patterns, with a focus on Gregor Mendel's contributions. It explains key genetic concepts such as dominant and recessive traits, genotypes, phenotypes, and the structure of chromosomes. Additionally, it outlines various genetic testing methods and poses questions for students to explore the prevalence of dominant alleles in a population.

Exercise 9: Genetics Bai ‘Genetics isthe stud of inheritance. Many researchers contributed tothe study of genetics, including Joseph Koelreuter and TA. Knight. Many research experiments showed the certain traits can disappear, only to reappear in the next generation. Gregor Mendel s now known asthe "Father of Genetics” because he was the frst researcher to come up with an explanation of how this could happen. He performed genetic experiments using the pea plant and statistically analyzed his results to determine patterns of inheritance. Genes are units of heredity located on chromosomes, for example, you inherit genes that code for the type of hair you have. Genes have a specific chromosome and location, called the locus, where they are found forall organism ofthe same species. We inherit two genes for every trait, one gene from our mother and one gene from our father, Alleles are the alternate forms ofa gene that can be Inherited, such as kinky har, curly hair, wavy hair, straight hair etc. Gregor Mendel explained that some genes are dominant and same are recessive, this is why a trait an disappear for one generation and then reappear the next. Dominant alleles are alleles that when present they are expressed and the tat canbe seen, Only one dominant allele is needed forthe trait tobe expressed. The dominant alee is ‘denoted by using a capita eter. Recessive alleles are alleles that ae hidden when a
