Yoga Nidra for Pregnancy and Birth

Celebration of Birth CD Notes by Anna Watts

'Celebration of Birth' has been especially developed to enhance the bonding

process between the mother to be and her baby in the womb, helping her to relax,
enjoy the pregnancy and look forward to the birth with more confidence. These
simple and effective relaxation techniques have assisted many women to remain
calm and focused during labour and the birth of their baby.

Yoga Nidra was devised by Swami Satyananda Saraswati from traditional Tantric
practices. Yoga Nidra means 'psychic sleep' or a state of dynamic sleep in which
complete physical, mental and emotional relaxation can occur. During the practice,
one appears to be asleep; however the consciousness is functioning at a far deeper
level of awareness.

For pregnant women Yoga Nidra can have a profound effect on strengthening the
connection with her unborn child, clearing the mind as she prepares for the birth
experience. She may experience incredible calmness, quietness and clarity. The
process of making a Resolve will also enhance a positive attitude towards
pregnancy/birth and encourage a feeling of empowerment.

It is important for the pregnant woman to be completely comfortable when

practicing Yoga Nidra; she may use cushions or blankets to support her body.
Recommended position for Yoga Nidra during pregnancy is Matsya Kridasana
(flapping fish pose), if lying in Shavasana (corpse pose) place a pillow or bolster
under the knees to relax the lower back.

CD Content
To gain the most benefit from 'Celebration of Birth' it is helpful to become familiar with
the Relaxation Visualisation before using the Birthing Visualisation.

Relaxation Visualisation (Track 1)

Practice this deep yogic relaxation as often as you can during pregnancy - daily if
you wish- to experience the full benefits of relaxing the body, the mind and
connecting with your baby in the womb. As you become more familiar with the
visualisation you will find it easier to relax, you will awake feeling refreshed and more
able to manage your daily activities.

Birthing Visualisation (Track 2)

This is an opportunity to use your imagination to experience your feelings about
giving birth. The Birthing Visualisation guides you through each stage of labour, gives
you an insight of what to expect during the birth experience and completes with the
welcoming of your baby. Practice this visualisation when you want to focus on your
birth vision, you can also use this track with your partner or support person when
making your Birth Plan.

Making a Resolve
A resolve is a positive way to focus on your pregnancy, giving birth or parenting. A
resolve often comes to you rather than you choosing it! When you make a resolve it
is like sowing the seed of an idea in your mind, and as you relax the space is created
for this idea to grow and blossom.
It is useful to have your resolve prepared before the relaxation. Repeating your
resolve regularly will create more balance, positive attitude and harmony in your life.

Sample birthing resolves:

"I receive love and support for myself and my baby"
"I release all fears and look forward to the birth with confidence" "I breathe,
trust and surrender to give birth peacefully"
"I give thanks for the joy of birth and celebrate new life"
