4 Earthquake Preparedness
By: Julius, Julmin, Canoy
What is PHIVOLCS?

PHIVOLCS(Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology) – It

is a service institute of the Department of Science and
Technology(DOST) that is principally mandated to mitigate
disasters that may arise from volcanic eruptions, earthquakes,
tsunami, and other related geotectonic.
Earthquake occur more frequently. Due to its location at the Pacific
Ring of Fire, the Philippines is prone to the constant tremors in Earth’s
crust.

The most active regions in the Ring of Fire are located along the
curved belts of volcanic islands situated adjacent to the deep
ocean trenches of the northern and western Pacific.

If a strong earthquake is predicted, people living in areas in

danger can be ask to evacuate.

In 1975, Chinese seismologists predicted an earthquake in their

country.
Who are Seismologists?

They are Earth scientists, specialized in geophysics, who

study the genesis and the propagation of seismic waves in
geological materials. These geological materials can
range from laboratory sample to the Earth as a whole,
from its surface from its core.
Pacific Ring of Fire
According to reports, although more than one million people
lived near the epicenter, there were very few casualties
because the earthquake was predicted and the people were
able to evacuate.

Some buildings has been made earthquake-proof to better

withstand the shock from an earthquake.

Seismologists have found some warning signals that

help predict earthquakes.

Often, there are changes in the speeds of P and S waves

before a major earthquake. Sometimes, slight changes in
the tilt of Earth’s surface can be detected.
What to do Before, During, and After an
Earthquake

Before an Earthquake:
• Store drinking water. Store dried and
can foods.
• Prepare an earthquake emergency
kit with non-perishable food, bottled
water, flashlights, first-aid materials,
blankets, spare glasses, and other
essential items. Keep it in a place
that can be easily accessed in case
of an earthquake.
• Everyone should know how to turn off
the electricity and water supply.
• Anchor heavy furniture down to the
floor.
• Conduct earthquake drills.
What to do Before, During, and After an
Earthquake

Indoors During an Earthquake:

• Immediately seek shelter in a safe
location, such as under a table or
desk, or along an interior wall away
from windows and hazardous
objects.
• Remember to drop, cover, and hold
on.
• Cover the back of your head and
your eyes to avoid injury from flying
debris.
• Beware of any falling objects or
electrical wires.
• If cooking, turn off heating
equipment immediately
What to do Before, During, and After an
Earthquake

Outdoors during an Earthquake:

• Stay in open areas away from
building, power lines, trees,
and other potential hazards.
• If driving, stop quickly but
safely and stay in the vehicle.
Do not stop near the power
lines, bridges, overpasses, or
other potential dangerous
locations.
• Stay calm and brace yourself
to keep your balance by
sitting, if possible.
What to do Before, During, and After an
Earthquake

After an Earthquake:
• Be prepared for aftershocks, which may
be stronger than the initial jolt.
• Check for injuries and attend to them
immediately. Call emergency assistance
if needed.
• Check for structural damage, but do
enter a building that shows damage or
has visible cracks in the walls or
foundation.
• Keep phone lines open for emergency
use.
• Be patient; it may take hours or days to
restore all services depending on the
severity of the earthquake.
