Intro Background of the Study

Teenage pregnancy remains to be one of major educational matters
impacting students' performance in the modern world. According to Dixon
(2014, p. 39), the few or nonexistent sex education that exists now contributes
significantly to the vice's global ascent. High rates of illiteracy in society and
archaic cultural customs are other factors that contribute to adolescent
pregnancy. The study made use of the research's data to pinpoint other elements
that contribute to the rise in teen pregnancies in emerging nations. Teenage
pregnancy is a global occurrence with clearly known causes and serious health,
social and economic consequences. Pregnant girls often drop out of school,
limiting opportunities for future employment and perpetuating the cycle of
poverty. In many cases, girls perceive pregnancy to be a better option than
continuing their education. Teenage pregnancy can also have negative social
and economic impacts on girls, their families and communities. If you get
pregnant as a teen, you might feel frightened and worried about telling your
family and friends. Not talking to someone and not getting the help and support
you need can make you feel more isolated and depressed. This can lead to
problems at home and at school. Single pregnant women who become pregnant
may face stigma or rejection by parents and peers as well as threats of violence.
Girls who become pregnant before the age of 18 are more likely to experience
violence within a marriage or partnership. One of the major reasons why teens
become aware of premarital sex is because of the social medias. Even though
the government has strict rules on what can be broadcast, it still cannot monitor
everything. The same goes for parents. A teenage or underage female becoming
pregnant is the simplest definition of a teenage pregnancy. The statement
assumes that the girl was not yet at legal age when she became pregnant.
Although there are many different circumstances or reasons why a teenage girl
could become pregnant, all adolescent pregnancies are the result of sexual
activity, whether or not it was done voluntarily. Making it impossible for the girl
to finish her school is one of the most painful and heartbreaking repercussions
of adolescent pregnancy. Among the negative effects of adolescent pregnancy
on academic performance include drop-out rates, repeaters, low performance,
and incapacity to graduate (Hofferth et al, 2001).
In the Philippines, the prevalence of adolescent pregnancies has raised
public concern. According to data from the Philippine Statistical Authority,
between the ages of 10 and 19, there were 180,916 live births in 2019. This
translates to 495 births each day. For the past nine years, there has been a rise in
the number of adolescent pregnancies. By the end of 2021, the Commission on
Population predicted that 133,000 households will be headed by minors.
Teenage pregnancies have a significant negative impact on the lives and health
of young people and their families. Teenage moms are more likely to abandon
their studies and refuse to pursue additional education in order to care for their
offspring. This interruption of schooling will deprive young mothers of the
opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to have an adequate
livelihood to support their families, reinforcing the cycle of poverty that affects
many of them. Early pregnancy also carries the dangers of birth complications,
raising the risk of maternal and infant mortality. Pandemic lockdowns increase
the possibility of repeat pregnancies for teenage mothers. The government made
the prevention of teenage pregnancy a top priority. In June, the President signed
an Executive Order, EO #141, to implement anti-teenage pregnancy policies
supported by government funds. Teenage pregnancy is one of the social ills that
affects our society. This is relatable to the girl’s lack of any consistent form of
support to care for their children and themselves when they should be in school.
Nowadays, early pregnancy among teenagers is common. Researchers from
different institutions usually focus on researching the reasons why teenagers get
pregnant early. The findings show that lack of proper sex education is the main
reason. Several factors are also considered. This includes poor parental
guidance teenagers are considered inadequate or poor of judgment this leads to
a premarital affair that eventually leads to early parenthood. Peer pressure is
sometimes seen as a reason. The study also gave readers a greater understanding
of the strategies that may be used to reduce teen pregnancies.
This research focuses on teenage pregnancy. Researchers will collect data
on the topic regarding how it affects young people. Research will reveal the
reasons for teenagers continuing with teenage pregnancy. This study will also
address other factors including social and environmental factors in adolescent
behaviors. And show the teenagers' perspective on life and the reasons behind
taking decisions. Common ideas about teenage pregnancy will be gathered and
discussed. Once complete a better knowledge of the problem and its impacts on
students, the system, and society in general in the emerging countries as a result
of the study.
