COLOURS OF
LIGHT

OVERVIEW
The colors of light refer to the visible spectrum, ranging from violet
(380 nm) to red (700 nm). This spectrum includes violet, blue, green,
yellow, orange, and red.
White light is a mix of all these colors, and a prism can separate
them into a rainbow.
The primary colors of light are red, green, and blue (RGB), which
combine in various ways to create all other colors. For example,
red and green make yellow.
Secondary colors are cyan, magenta, and yellow, formed by mixing
two primary colors.
Color temperature describes the warmth or coolness of light,
measured in Kelvins (K). Lower values are warm (reddish), while
higher values are cool (bluish).
Light outside the visible range includes ultraviolet (UV) and infrared
(IR), which we cannot see but have practical uses (e.g., sterilization,
heat sensing).

1.
RULES Additive Color Mixing:
Primary colors of light are Red, Green, and Blue (RGB).
Mixing all three produces white light.
Red + Green = Yellow, Green + Blue = Cyan, Blue + Red = Magenta.
2. Wavelengths:
Different colors correspond to different wavelengths:
Red is the longest, Blue/Violet is the shortest.
3. Subtractive Color Mixing (for pigments):
Primary colors for pigments are Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow (CMY).
Mixing them absorbs light, producing colors like Red, Green, and
Blue. All three make black.
4. Color Perception:
Our eyes use cones to detect red, green, and blue light, combining
them to perceive other colors.
5. Dispersion:
White light separates into its component colors (like a rainbow) when
it passes through a prism due to different bending of wavelengths.
6. Color Temperature:
Warm light is yellow/red (lower temperature), while cool light is
blue/white (higher temperature).

PRIMARY COLOURS
1. Primary Colors: The primary colors of light are Red,
Green, and Blue (RGB).
2. Additive Mixing: When you mix primary colors of light,
you get new colors through an additive process:
01 Red + Green = Yellow
Green + Blue = Cyan
Blue + Red = Magenta
02
Red + Green + Blue = White
3. Brightness Increase: Adding more colors of light results
in increased brightness. Combining all three primary
colors gives white light, the brightest result.
03
4. Absence of Light: The absence of all primary colors (no
light) results in black.
These rules are the basis for how screens, lighting, and
displays use RGB to create a wide range of colors.
