COMMUNICATION
Module 2 Communication: Process and Elements

Intended Learning Outcome:

Define Communication.
Describe the process and elements of communication.
Explain how the communication process works and how important each elements are.

PREPARATION

Charades with a Twist!

The mechanics of this game are pretty simple. The class will be divided into three (3)
groups and the groups will form a line and choose a representative. Each representative
will pick a folded paper (indicating words that they will act) from a bowl. The rest of the
members will form a line and then face each other’s back. After the representative picks a
folded paper, he/she will pass the written message on the paper by doing actions without
saying a word. And then the other member will pass it, until it reaches to the last member,
and that person will go in front to tell what is the message being conveyed/portrayed.

Questions:
1. What have you observed from the game?
2. How do you describe the process of communication you and your groupmates
executed?
3. Was the communication successful or unsuccessful? Why?
4. What did you do to make the communication effective?
PRESENTATION

Communication
is a process of sharing and conveying the imparting or exchanging of information or
news wherein a message is conveyed from a sender to a receiver using a medium,
such as sound, written signs, bodily movements, or electricity.
is (sometimes) defined as the process of sending and receiving messages
(Satterwhite & Olson-Sutton, 2007)
is the process of using verbal and non-verbal messages to generate meaning within
and across various contexts, cultures and channels (Engelberg & Wynn, 2008)

THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS

There are a lot of important components for the process to be successful. Here are the
components in which completes the communication process.

The two common elements in every communication exchange are the sender and the
receiver.
The sender initiates the communication. He or she is a person who has a need or
desire to convey an idea or concept to others. On the other hand, the receiver is the
individual to whom the message is sent.
The sender encodes or formulates the idea by selecting words, symbols, or
gestures with which to compose a message.
The message is the outcome of the encoding or formulating, which takes the
form of verbal, nonverbal, or written language. The message is sent through a
medium or channel, which is the carrier of the communication.
The medium can be a face-to-face conversation, telephone call, e-mail, or
written report. The receiver decodes, interprets or understands the received
message into meaningful information.
Noise is anything that distorts the message. Different perceptions of the message,
language barriers, interruptions, emotions, and attitudes are examples of noise
Internal Noise- Interference from internal thoughts and feelings.
External Noise- Interruptions caused by external factors, such as loud background
Semantic Noise -Disturbances related to the meaning or interpretation of a message
Finally, feedback occurs when the receiver responds to the sender's message
and returns the message to the sender. It allows the sender to determine whether
the message has been received and understood.
The elements in the communication process determine the quality of communication.
A problem in any one of these elements can reduce communication effectiveness
(Keyton, 2011). For example, information must be encoded into a message that can
be understood as the sender intended. Selection of the medium for transmitting the
message can be critical because there are many choices.
