Johannesburg
The largest city in South Africa is Johannesburg, often called ‘Joburg’ or ‘Jozi’. This capital
of Gauteng, the richest province in South Africa, is one of the largest urban areas in the
world. In 1886 gold was discovered on a farm called Langlaagte and this led to a gold rush
which attracted thousands of people from all over the world who were eager to find their
fortune in this “City of Gold”.

By the early 1900s, Johannesburg had mushroomed and it soon became a bustling city with
railways and businesses. Manufacturing and banking also began to thrive. The city played a
significant role in the development of the entire country.
