CLASS – 9
I. TITLE
School Name - St. Karen's Secondary School, Khagaul, Patna
Team Members – Dheeru Raj, Manas Kumar
Title Of The Project – Eco Metropolis – Zero Waste Revolution
Mentors Name – Juhi Afroz
II. NATURE OF WORK
● Novel Solution/indigenous design to a problem/challenges
.
III. RATIONALE
● The project is an initiative for a better future and a cleaner tomorrow it
helps in reducing climate degradation by making use of pollutants like
plastic wastes, vehicles emissions. Thus putting a step forward towards a
city with net zero wastage by making all the facilities eco friendly and
economic friendly
IV. SCIENTIFIC PRINCIPLE(S) CONCEPTS
The Eco-Metropolis model employs innovative scientific principles to
promote sustainability.
● Air Pollution to Ink Refinery : This model utilises carbon capture
technology, which filters soot from vehicle emissions. Captured carbon is
processed into ink, reducing airborne pollutants and repurposing waste
into a usable product.
● Waste to Electricity Transformer: Here, thermal conversion techniques
are applied. Plastic waste is incinerated to generate heat energy, while
solar panels harness sunlight, creating a hybrid energy system that
minimizes landfill waste and maximizes renewable energy use.
● Weed Paper using School: This initiative employs biorefinery processes to
convert invasive plant species into paper, promoting biodiversity and
reducing deforestation. The school also uses eco-friendly ink produced
from captured pollutants.
● Perfumes from Used Flowers : This model focuses on waste valorisation,
transforming floral waste into perfumes, thereby reducing landfill
contributions and creating value from organic waste.
● Together, these models illustrate a comprehensive approach to achieving
net-zero waste in urban environments.
V. MATERIALS REQUIRED
● (Basic Structure)Wooden plank chart papers replica of schools and buildings etc.
● Air pollution to ink refinery –
⮚ Network of pipelines next line
⮚ Carbon filter
⮚ Exhaust fan
⮚ DC motors
⮚ Carbon store house
⮚ Test tube [converting area]
● Waste to electricity-
⮚ Pipes
⮚ Ignition source
⮚ Plastic wastes from various areas
⮚ Metallic tower
⮚ Solar plates, wires and Switches, bulb.
● A school that uses paper out of weeds
⮚ Paper made out of weeds.
● Perfume shop
⮚ Use/ Waste flowers from shrines/temples.
⮚ Bottles and spray nozzles.
VI. PROCEDURE/DESCRIPTION
● Air pollution to ink refinery –
⮚ Set up a network of pipeline along the roads and industrial areas for
collecting carbon emissions. At each junction of pipeline will be an
exhaust fan for suck in the pollutants. Further these pollutants will be
transported to the ink refinery where the carbon will be separated.
⮚ After separation the carbon will be stored in the carbon store house [glass
made]. When sufficient amount of carbon will be collected, the process of
making ink will begin this carbon in powdered for will be mixed with
water and left for some time for the formation of ink.
● Waste to electricity transformer-
⮚ This transforming unit uses plastic wastes from various areas to generate
electricity. Plastic waste from all over the city is collected in it's dump-
yard.
⮚ These collected waste will undergo Combustion on specialised tower. The
heat generated by burning will generate electricity through solar panels.
The burnt residue will also be used to make plastic bricks. [carbon
emitted into the air, will also be used in the ink refinery.]
⮚ The electricity generated will be efficiently supplied to the city as a whole,
and the plastic bricks will be supplied to the construction sites.
● Paper out of crops residue (parali, chaff and weeds)–
⮚ Crop residue [Waste plant] Will be collected from farmlands And
farmers. These are grinned and given a shape of paper
⮚ These papers are used at the school colleges and institutions.
Enhancements Based on Judges' Inputs for "Eco Metropolis"
During the CBSE Science Exhibition Regional Level, our "Eco Metropolis" model
received valuable feedback from the judges. Based on their inputs, we are implementing
the following enhancements to further improve our project:
1. Dyes from Used Flowers of Shrines and temples
Initially, our sub-model focused on extracting scents from used flowers collected
from shrines. The judges suggested expanding this concept to include the production of
natural dyes from these flowers. By extracting pigments, we can create eco-friendly dyes
for textiles and other materials, thus broadening the application of recycling floral
waste. This addition not only enhances the sustainability aspect of our model but also
demonstrates the versatility of upcycling organic waste.
2. Air Pollution to Ink: Carbon Filter Integration
In our sub-model "Air to Ink," we initially focused on converting captured
carbon emissions into ink. The judges recommended incorporating an air pollution
filter that would specifically target carbon particles from the air. This filter will purify
the air by capturing carbon, which can then be processed into usable ink. This
innovative approach not only reduces air pollution but also creates a tangible product,
demonstrating the potential of turning waste into a valuable resource.
By implementing these suggestions, our "Eco Metropolis" model will be more
comprehensive, showcasing multiple ways to tackle environmental challenges through
creative recycling and upcycling techniques. These enhancements reflect our
commitment to continuous improvement and the practical application of sustainable
solutions.
