THE TONKS HOODIE
This beginner-friendly pattern is named after the HP series character, Tonks! The
design is inspired by Baja Jackets/Hoodies, a type of Mexican jacket traditionally
made out of a coarse woolen fabric known as "jerga." These hoodies have an
oversized fit, so if you would like it to be a bit more fitted, be sure to size down.

1
THE BACK PANEL
For this design, you will create three separate rectangles to start out–the
back panel and two front panels. We will start with the back panel!
Chain 34(35,36,37,38,38,39)
2
THE FRONT PANELS
Chain 31(32,33,34,35,36,37)
3
Here you will "sew" up the
shoulders using SC stitches!
*estimated 9(11,13,15,17,19,21,23)
stitches total*
4
Now that you have both
shoulders secured, it is time to
use the same SC technique for
the sides!
Use SC stitches to
"sew up" the sides
until there are 5
stitches left to the
bottom of the front
panel. This will
create the slit in the
side of the pullover.
Repeat on the other
side!
5
The photo below shows both the finished SC shoulder seam and
the SC side seam connecting the front panel to the back panel
along with the red marks indicating the space left for the arm hole
and the space left at the bottom to create the side "slit."
6
TIME TO ADD THE HOOD!
Join 5 stitches below the neck on the inner border (see photo)
Row 1: Ch 1, 5 HDC up the inside border, 12 HDC across neck, 5
HDC down the other inner border, turn
Row 2-18: HDC 22 across for 18 rows
Sew up top of hood (mattress stitch).
The photo to
the right shows
where I placed
each of the 12
stitches in the
neck portion.
These are SC
stitches just to
show clarity of
placement (you
will be doing
HDC stitches
here) .

The photo to the left
shows me about halfway
through the hood rows,
and the photo below
shows the hood after
being sewn up using
mattress stitch!
I am a HUGE fan of
progress selfies, and
this is a fun time to
take one!! All you have
left now is the front
border, the sleeves
and the hoodie
pocket!!! WOOT!!!
8
ON TO THE FRONT BORDER
Time for the front border! Join at the bottom of the inner front panel
(shown in the photo below)
9
TIME TO SEW UP THE FRONT
Use mattress stitch to sew up the front of your hoodie! Now it is time to do a
quick fit check! You can always add 1-2 additional rows to the front border if
you need a bit more width to your hoodie! I used photos from another one of
my Tonks hoodies for this part so that you can see what it looks like to have a
contrasting front border instread of using all one color!
10
THE HOODIE POCKET!
Chain 21(21,21,23,23,23,25)
Row 1: SC in 2nd CH FTH, SC 19(19,19,21,21,21,23) across [20,20,20,22,22,22,24]
Row 2-6(6,6,7,7,7,8): SC 20(20,20,22,22,22,24)
Row 7(7,7,8,8,8,9): SC2tog, SC 16(16,16,18,18,18,20), SC2tog
Row 8(8,8,9,9,9,10): SC2tog, SC 14(14,14,16,16,16,18), SC2tog
Row 9(9,9,10,10,10,11): SC2tog, SC 12(12,12,14,14,14,16), SC2tog
Row 10(10,10,11,11,11,12): SC2tog, SC 10(10,10,12,12,12,14), SC2tog
Row 11(11,11,12,12,12,13): SC2tog, 8(8,8,10,10,10,12) SC, SC2tog
Row 12(12,12,13,13,13,14): 10(10,10,12,12,12,14) sc across
Create a border of SCs around the pocket, putting 3 SCs into each of the bottom
corners and 2 SCs into all of the other transitions (see photo).
11
SEWING YOUR POCKET ON
Time to sew on your pocket! I
centered my pocket on my garment
and placed it about 3 HDC stitches
up from the bottom of the hoodie.
12
TIME FOR THE SLEEVES!
Can you see the light at the end of the tunnel yet?! You will be working rows in
the round for the sleeves and will join at the end of each row with a slip stitch.
You will also be turning between each row until the final few rows.
13
These sleeves are pretty long (and I have long arms, lol!) so if you'd like them
to be shorter, start your final 3 SC rows at row 19 or 20 instead of row 22!
If you would like to add some length to your hoodie or just a pop of color you
can add a bottom border like the one shown in the photo above! I used one
row of SC stitches accross the bottom of the front and back panels but you
can do 2-3 rows if you would like. You can also do a final border of SC stitches
around the side slits if you would like!
