What is Design:
A Design is a plan or strategy for the construction of an object/system for the implementation of an
activity/process. It could also be a tangible intervention for solving a given problem. A person who produces a
design is called a Designer, generally used for people who work professionally in one of the various creative
areas—
Textile, Fashion, Jewellery, Footwear
Visual communications design (Graphics Design is a part of visual communications)
User Interface/User Experience/Interaction Design (Graphics Design is also taught in this)
Interior and Architecture Design,
Transport/Mobility,
Product/Industrial and many more.
Main Competencies are:
- Artistic
- Enterprising
- Realistic and
Personality wise- they can be both introverts and Introverts: This article shows that introverts make very
good designers.

- why not investigative?
1) Product Design and Industrial Design
https://www.ignitec.com/insights/product-design-and-industrial-design-whats-the-difference/
Product design is about creating solutions; industrial design is about taking those solutions through
manufacture and to the end user. Essentially, the conceptual design and development of product design is
part of industrial design.
Industrial Design is commonly defined as the holistic approach of building a new product from start to finish.
This encompasses everything from doing market research, identifying problems, Product Development,
designing informed solutions—and everything in between.
You will either involve in designing or innovating the new product or may modify the existing product to
improve its quality and durability. You will develop the new ideas and create their blueprints either by
sketching out on the paper or by making Computer Aided Design in 2D or 3D shapes. Some of you will be
involved in researching the market to know the consumer’s needs or wants. As a product/industrial designer,
you will work with manufacturers, engineers, production experts, research analysts etc. and help them to
create the looks and designs for the product and test their worth in the market. You may either work for an
organization/industry as a salaried employee or may start your own business or product designing. Though
some designers also work on a day-to-day basis for their particular clients and known as freelance designers.
After a degree in Engineering or Architecture also, one can do a masters in Product or Industrial Design.
2) User Experience Design/User Interface (Interaction) Design
Interaction design is an important component within the giant umbrella of user experience (UX) design. It is
the design of the interface between users and products. Most often when people talk about interaction
design, the products tend to be software products like apps or websites. The interaction between a user and a
product often involves elements like aesthetics, motion, sound, space, and many more.
Interaction Designers are highly sought after by employers around the globe. It’s a field that has seen
tremendous growth as the world adapts to a digital first mindset. Organisations like Facebook, NASA,
Microsoft and others actively recruit students from this field.
3) Visual Communications Design- Imagine that you're on vacation in a foreign city, and you get lost while
driving.
You don't speak the language very well, so asking directions won't do much good. Instead, you can rely on a
map, using landmarks, routes, and familiar signs, which successfully lead you back to your hotel. In this
scenario, you have found
your way back almost entirely through visual communication. Visual communication is the transmission of
information using symbols and imagery. It is believed to be the type that people rely on most, and it includes
signs, graphic designs, films, typography, and countless other examples.
- Apart from graphic design, visual communications design will also include:
- Photography
- Film and videos
- Animation
- Logo/Brand Communication design
4) Fashion Design-
Fashion Designing is one of the most popular, alluring, glamorous and exciting career options in today's world.
If one has an inclination for creativity, style and originality, a career in fashion designing is apt for you.
If you want to pursue a career in this industry, you will have to really put in some hard work and develop new
skills to meet the demand of the Industry. Fashion Designers play a vital role in how we see the world today.
From consistently
updating new trends and developing the taste of people- to understand art history to understand fashion
world and trends. It's your choice whether you want to just work in the fashion industry, or actually become
the driving force behind this world. To build your position you need to start with the basics of fashion.
Bachelor in designing (B.Des) is a four-year course which is aimed to develop your aesthetic skills in design and
fashion.
If creative expression is your thing, you may become Fashion Show Coordinator, Fashion Consultant, Fashion
Forecaster, Fashion Entrepreneur, Fashion Stylist, Fashion Photographer, Fashion Designer/Assistant Designer,
Production Supervisor, Fashion Merchandiser, Quality Supervisor, and Costume designer, Pattern Designer,
Pattern Maker, and Fashion Illustrator. Textile design is essentially the process of creating designs for woven,
knitted or
printed fabrics or surface ornamented fabrics. Textile designers are involved with the production of these
designs, which are used, sometimes repetitively, inclothing and interior decor items.
5) Transportation Design
Transportation design is a profession involved in ideating and developing new concepts of mobility that satisfy
the emerging needs of the users. This career mostly revolves around automobiles and includes buses,
motorcycles, vans, trucks and coaches.
- Example Vande Bharat Express
While designing various models these professionals have to take care of factors such as aesthetics, safety,
costing, functionality, resources, sustainability, etc. The designers work with automotive concept
design ,public transportation ,aircraft interior etc. Designers prepare sketches, renderings, and 3D proposals
for client review. They also work with other disciplines in the development of scale and full size models. They
also work with program engineering teams in the development of feasible high quality products based on the
designs.
Areas They Work?
Automotive industry
Custom Design Companies
Aircraft manufacturers
Rapid Transit Industries (Like Mtero etc)
Aerospace industry for spacecraft designing
Shipbuilding Industry for marine vessel designing
6) Interior Design- Interior design is the art and science of enhancing the interior of a building to
achieve a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing environment for the people
using that space. An Interior Designer plans, researches, coordinates, and
manages such enhancement projects. Interior design is a multifaceted profession
that includes conceptual development, space planning, site inspections,
programming and research, communicating with the stakeholders of a project,
construction management, and execution of the design.
On the other hand, Furniture design is a specialised field where function and
aesthetics combine. Pieces of furniture not only add function and practicality to
space, but they also add style and personality. Anyone having an eye for detailing
and material can venture into this field. Furniture has evolved and changed with the
times, and some styles have remained somewhat constant throughout the years,
while others have drastically changed or become obsolete. Today, creating new
furniture styles is often seen as a type of industrial art form. After pursuing this
course, one can work with Architects, Interior Design firms, Construction
Companies or freelance as well.
7) Animation Film Design
Animation is the capturing of sequential, static images—drawings or photos of inanimate objects—and playing
them in rapid succession to mimic real world motion. Considering the wide-ranging history of animation, we
see its appeal iswide-ranging as well. Kids love it, of course, because most of the stories for children involve
talking animals, objects, or visuals otherwise impossible to bring to life. Animation allows artists to invoke that
childlike wonder and awe of not believing our eyes, but to harness that power for more mature storytelling
and hence becomes serious business.
Indian Animation industry is now opening up to original ideas to mark its own identity in the global animation
map. For this there is an ever-increasing demand for trained human resources and thinking minds as
animators, content creators and mentors. The creative and technical skills developed in an animation degree
open up career possibilities in film and a range of other creative and digital roles
Jobs directly related to Animation career include:
Animator
Concept artist
Games developer

- It is process used for problem solving by prioritizing the consumer’s needs above all else.
- It relies on observing, with empathy, how people interact with their environments, and employs an iterative,
hands-on approach to creating innovative solutions.
- It started out as a process for designing sleek new technology and products. But this methodology is now widely
used across both the private and public sectors, for business and personal projects, all around the world
- It is non linear and iterative
- To be truly human-centered, designers watch how people use a product or service and continue to refine the
product or service in order to improve the consumer’s experience. This is the “iterative” part of design thinking.
It favors moving quickly to get prototypes out to test, rather than endless research or rumination.
- 5 stages:
o Empathize (observe and research)
o Define
o Ideate (brainstorming)
o Prototype
o Test (observe)
- While design thinking originated with designers, it is now widely used by people from all disciplines.
