Intermediate 2, Project

A cultural festival is an event that celebrates the traditions, customs, arts, and heritage of a
particular culture or group of cultures.

By implementing a Cultural Festival as a project in the classroom, SWBAT:

● Explain different cultures within the Dominican Republic to enhance their knowledge
in the tourism of the country by investigating, memorizing and learning new
vocabulary and concepts to present in the classroom.
● Design their own cultural stand by incorporating elements from different cities into a
presentation.

Activity
● Students will be divided into two groups.
● Every group will choose a city within a given province (e.g: in Hermanas Mirabal, one
group works with Salcedo, the other one works with Tenares).
● Students will make a promotional intro video of 1min or less about their province and
city, highlighting tourism (attractions, activities, food…).
● Students will create a stand according to their province and city, showcasing its
important aspects (including things like flags, clothes, food, pictures, instruments…).
● Students must dress to represent the folklore of their province/city.
● Students will present orally a series of subtopics about their city.
● To finish their presentation, every group must showcase an artistic presentation of
any kind (dance, poetry, drama…).

Subtopics
1. Physical Geography (climate, rivers, woods, green areas, mountains, animals)
2. History
3. Religion
4. Manners and Customs
5. Holidays / Celebrations
6. Gastronomy
7. Music
8. Sports
9. Famous Characters (historical / present)
10. Economy (main import/export products)
11. Tourism (travel advice, popular destinations, travel requirements)
12. Natural Attractions
13. Landmarks
Notes
● There must be a subtopic for each member. However, if there are less members in a
group, some subtopics must be joined, like: Geography and History, Religion,
Manners and Celebrations, Music and Sports, Natural attractions and Landmarks.
● When talking about religion, do not get into personal thoughts/beliefs. Only explain
general facts.
● Do not use bad words or dominicanismos, like: bobo, teteo…
● If there is an EIP center in the given province/city, investigate and explain how it has
impacted that province/city.
● Do not use tape or adhesive on the walls or doors.
● Mockery, excessive noise, or any type of bullying cannot be tolerated during another
group’s presentation.
● Divide your groups into two: a group A to go out and visit other classrooms, and a
group B to stay at the stand and receive other classrooms.
● Upload your promotional intro video here. The link will be available until the day of
the presentation, 10:00p.m.

Assessment
● Present on Wednesday, September 11th, 2024.
● Each group is given 1 hour to perform.
● Once each group presents, students will receive feedback from their teacher.
● When everyone is done, groups A will visit other classrooms, and groups B will stay
and receive another classroom by briefly talking about their province/city.
