"Hello everyone, and thank you for being here today. I’m [Your Name], and I’m excited to present our
project on 'Smart Waste Management: An AI-Powered Solution for Sustainable Cities.' This app
leverages artificial intelligence to enhance waste sorting and collection, aiming to contribute to a
cleaner, more sustainable urban environment."
"Urban waste management presents significant challenges, from overflowing bins to improper disposal
practices. These issues lead to inefficiencies, environmental harm, and missed opportunities for
recycling. Our app tackles these problems directly by automating and improving the waste sorting and
collection process, aiming to make cities cleaner, greener, and more efficient."
"Our solution uses AI to classify waste, track the fullness of bins, and notify collection teams when bins
are ready for pickup. This system increases recycling rates, reduces the volume of waste sent to landfills,
and optimizes waste collection schedules, making a positive impact on both the environment and
operational costs."
"Here’s how the app works: First, a user approaches the bin and presents the waste to a camera. The AI
then classifies the waste type. If the waste matches the bin's type, it unlocks automatically; if not, it
remains locked. The system continuously tracks bin fullness and sends notifications to collection teams
when the bin is full. This process prevents contamination in recycling bins and ensures collection is only
done when necessary, saving resources."
"Our app offers four core features. First, it uses AI for accurate waste classification. Second, it has an
automated locking mechanism that opens only for the correct type of waste. Third, it tracks the fullness
of bins in real time. Lastly, it sends alerts to waste collection teams for efficient collection scheduling.
Each of these features is designed to make waste management more effective and sustainable."
Slide 6: Technology Stack – Technologies and Tools Used
"To build this app, we used Visual Studio Code for development and Git for version control. We
implemented AI models with TensorFlow or PyTorch and OpenCV for image recognition. Streamlit
enables a user-friendly interface, and SQL helps manage data, tracking waste types and disposal history.
For hardware, a camera captures images to classify waste in real time."
"This app contributes to sustainability in three ways. It improves recycling rates by preventing recyclable
waste from being misclassified. It reduces landfill waste by ensuring that each type of waste ends up in
the right bin. Additionally, optimized collection schedules reduce the number of trips needed for waste
pickup, cutting down on emissions and fuel use."
"As promising as this technology is, there are some challenges. The app requires a stable internet
connection for real-time updates. The AI model may sometimes misclassify waste, especially in unclear
images. Also, deploying AI-enabled bins involves costs. However, these limitations provide opportunities
for future development and improvement."
"Looking ahead, we aim to improve the AI’s accuracy through ongoing training, expand the app to more
cities, and integrate IoT sensors for enhanced bin monitoring. Additionally, partnerships with
municipalities could help scale our impact, making waste management more effective on a larger scale."
"One of our challenges is ensuring constant internet connectivity, especially in areas with limited access.
We propose a potential collaboration with Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, to provide
global internet coverage. By using satellite technology, we could ensure our app is accessible
everywhere, making smart waste management truly universal."
