TEACHING MATH IN THE INTERMEDIATE GRADES
SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN
PANGASINAN STATE UNIVERSITY
STA. MARIA CAMPUS
Teacher Grade level Grade 4
I. Learning Objective
Objectives: At the end of the lesson the learners should be able to:
a. Understand the concept of multiplication and,
b. Solve 2-3 digit numbers;
c. Work cooperatively in class during the activities and discussions.
II. Subject Matter
A. Topic Multiplication of 2-3 digit numbers

C. Material Flash cards, Cartolina, Containers, and other Realia Objects
III. Model Instruction Application
A. Preliminary 1. Greetings
Activities The teacher will greet the pupils and they will also greet back.
(3 minutes)
2. Prayer
The teacher will call one of pupils to lead the prayer.
Father God, Come with us today. Fill our hearts with joy. Fill our minds with
learning. Fill our classrooms with peace. Fill our lessons with fun. Fill our
friendships with kindness. Fill our school with love. Amen.
3. Checking of Attendance
The teacher will check the class attendance. Then, the pupils will say
“present” as they hear their name.
Assuming that there is no absent. The pupils will clap their hands.
4. Classroom Management
The teacher will present the classroom rules and procedures. Then, the
pupils will read each rule.
CLASSROOM RULES:
Be kind
Raise your hand if you have a question
Be Punctual
Follow Instructions
5. Checking of Assignments
The teacher will instruct the pupils to pass their assignment. Then, the pupils
will pass their assignment forward.
B. Activity "Where is the Problem and your Answer?"
(10 minutes)
A member of the team will run to the container (Container A) filled with
sensory material e.g. sand to find hidden multiplication problems. Once a
person discovers a flashcard, they will go and stick it to the chalkboard, then
the person again will search to another container (Container B) for the correct
answer. The goal is to match as many problems with their answers as
possible within a set time. The team with the most correct matches wins the
game.
Materials:
Two containers
Small objects or materials to fill one container (e.g., sand)
Flashcards with 2-3 digits multiplication problems
Flashcards with corresponding answers
Timer
C. Discussion Teacher will talk about students’ experience during the activity.
(3 minutes)
Questions:
1. What do think about our activity today?
2. What observations did you make about the multiplication problems in
Container A as you searched for flashcards?
3. Did you notice any patterns or techniques that helped you quickly
identify the answer in multiplication problems in Container A?
4. Were there any specific multiplication techniques or strategies that
your team observed being particularly effective during the activity?
(eg., mental math).
5. Were there any particular multiplication problems that proved more
challenging to find or match an answer?
The teacher will reintroduce again the flashcards, encouraging students to
respond with the correct answer as a form of review.
D. Input
(15 minutes) What is Multiplication?
Multiplication (denoted by ‘×’) in Math, it is a mathematical operation,
apart from addition, subtraction and division. It is the method of finding
the product of two or more numbers. The multiplication of two numbers
represents the repeated addition of one number with respect to
another.
Suppose you have a bouquet with 20 flowers. Your neighbor decides to gift
you 5 times the number of flowers you already have. The total number of
flower can be represented with a multiplication expression: 20 × 5 =100. This
is spoken as "twenty multiplied by five equals one hundred." By multiplying
the initial 20 flower pots by 5 “(20 x 5)”, you now have a total of 100 flower
pots in your garden.
(For this discussion, manipulatives are necessary as a reference when
computing the sum of the numbers.)
The multiplication formula is expressed as, Multiplicand × Multiplier =
Product; where:
Multiplicand: The total number of objects in each group.
Multiplier: The number of equal groups.
Product: The final result after multiplying the multiplicand and multiplier.
Multiplication symbol: '×' (which connects the entire expression)
E. Deepening Teacher will ask question that will engage student in critical and creative
(7 minutes) thinking.
1.This operation is where you will find the product of two or more numbers.
2. It is the total number of objects in each group.
3. It is the number of equal groups.
Give some multiplication problems to answer.
1. 11x11 =
2. 21 x12 =
3. 121 x 22 =
4. 111 x 22 =
5. 143 x 57 =
F. Activity “Flashcard Relay”
(5 minutes)
Instructions:
Divide participants into two groups to engage in the Flashcard Relay game.
The objective is to quickly answer the flashcards displayed. The first person
to raise their hand and correctly respond earns a point for their team. The first
team to accumulate 5 points wins the game and receives a prize.
G. Synthesis
(7 minutes) Instruction: Multiply the following numbers.
1. 72 x 3 =
2. 96 x 5 =
3. 53 x 4 =
4. 629 x 2 =
5. 795 x 4 =
6. 554 x 3 =
7. 786 x 32 =
8. 543 x 32 =
9. 799 x 12 =
10. 333 x 666 =
