POSITION OF OBJECT
And
DESCRIBING MOTIONS OF OBJECTS
I. Overview
Position is the place or location of an object at a given time. It is often easier to describe a
position when there is a reference point. Reference point is the position of another object, in
relation to the position of the object you are describing.
An object in motion is moving. An object that is moving changes position. You know that
something is moving when you compare its position to the positions of the objects around it.
II. Intended Learning Outcomes:
a. describe the different positions of objects;
b. relate motion with position.
c. predict motion based on an object’s direction.

IV. Content/ Lecture: (4 phours)
Good days kids! How are you?
For this day, you will learn about position of objects, and describing motions of objects.
Position of Objects
On page 195, examine the class picture and see if you tell the position of each member of
the class using their teacher’s position as reference point.
Try to answer the questions about the position of the of each member of the class on page
195.
What is position?
Position is the place or location of an object at a given time.
It is often easier to describe a position when there is a reference point. Reference point is
the position of another object, in relation to the position of the object you are describing.
Look for the pictures of the position on page 195.
Based on the picture on page 195, you can describe the different positions of the ball by referring to
the other object, which is the reference point. In this situation, it is the box.
May you read these descriptions?
The ball is in the box.
The ball is on top of the box.
The ball is under the box.
The ball is next to the box.
The ball is behind the box.
The ball is in front of the box.
The ball is between the boxes.
The words: in, on, under, next to, behind, in front of and between are what we call position
words. They help describe the ball’s location. Position or location and reference point are related to
motion.
Describing Motions of Objects
Many things around us move. Some move slowly like a cloud or a snail. Other things move,
but we can hardly see it – like the grass that grows. Other things faster like the vehicles on the
highway or the jet in the sky. But how do you really know that something has moved?
There are three ways to tell:
By their position or location
By their direction
By their speed
Describing Motion Based on Position
An object in motion is moving. An object that is moving changes position. We know that
something is moving when we compare its position to the positions of the objects around it.
Look at the pictures on page 202. The man pushing the shopping cart is moving. We know
this is happening because he is walking past the shelves. They are the reference points.
The same is true for the horse racer in motion. His reference points are the white fences. For
the kid taking a walk in the forest, the trees around him are his reference points.
On the fourth picture, we can describe motion by comparing the object’s position at
different points in time.
The picture on page 203, tells us that the red car is moving faster than he blue one. We can
describe the motions of the two cars in terms of their speed. Speed is the measure of how slow or
fast an object is moving.
V. Learning Activity/Supplementary Activity
On your book, answer page 205 (letter A-B).
VI. Generalization
Position is the place or location of an object at a given time.
Reference point is the position of another object, in relation to the position of the object
you are describing.
The words: in, on, under, next to, behind, in front of and between are what we call position
words.
Speed is the measure of how slow or fast an object is moving.
VII. Assessment
Name the object whose position is being described. Use the given picture.
