The New Year began for us, as in the past, with the very auspicious Vishnu
Sahasranama Archana program. This has been our tradi onal event held
every first Sunday of the New Year. However, this year, in addi on to Vishnu
Sahasranama chan ng, we had a unique event on the same day and that was
“Matri-Pitri Puja”. There, children worshipped their parents aided by
chan ng of a beau ful composi on “Matri Stavanam” by Swami
Tejomayananda ji- expressing gra tude by children to their parents. It was
indeed very heartwarming to see youngsters schooled in the modern
educa on system, performing Puja with the parents as their beloved dei es.

Reviving yet another old tradi on, the Mission organized a picnic at a
devotee’s beau ful garden house, some distance away from the city. On a
balmy Sunday, relaxing in the sun, mee ng other class students and devotees
and par cipa ng in games with a spiritual flavor seemed quite perfect
coupled with delicious food. It was truly a memorable and fun ou ng
amongst Mission members.

Hopefully, the rest of the year too, will be filled with meaningful ac vi es and
our Mission will ever be a hub of Seva, learning and joyous camaraderie.

In and through all these events, and intellectual Vedanta classes, may we be
always worshipful towards the Lord. We need to recall a very powerful verse
from the Bhagavad Gita – chapter 18, verse 58 – which Gurudev translates as-

“Fixing your mind upon Me, you shall, by My grace, overcome all obstacles,
but if, from egoism, you will not hear Me, you shall perish.”

FEBRUARY 2025 7
Swami Chinmayananda

Carve out a new canal in your mind with repeated good thought waves.
Repeat to yourself, “I love all. I am very tolerant.” Go on repeating the self-
suggestive thoughts: “I am kind. I will never get angry,” and so on. In a very
short time, you will observe that you have no anger at all in your mental
make-up.

Be aware of your weaknesses. Be fully aware of them. Man is his mind. He is

the very composition of his mind. When one performs some actions
repeatedly, one’s mind gets fixed with certain impressions. It is in a world of
reactions related to the outer world of objects that we live in. The quality of
one’s experiences depends upon the quality of the mind which one brings to
undergo the experience. The mind, being what it is, is ordered and set by the
various impressions it has gathered in its different transactions in life. Thus,
when we control and chasten the motives and thoughts in the mind, we
purify it.

Sermon in Silence
Swami Ishwarananda

In the midst of assembled Rishis in the forest

Was seated Rama with his resplendent face.
Eager to know about Rama,
Wives of the Rishis inquired of Sita
Who her husband among them was.
Denying each one as 'not him, not him',
When finally they pointed out Rama,
She hung her head and remained silent….

Eloquent and most profound was the silence.

Vedas, while teaching us about
The nature of Brahman, do the same...
Denying all that we experience
As ‘not this, not this’ …
Finally reaching the undeniable Self,
Remain profoundly, eloquently silent!

Swami AbhedanandaJi’s talk on
‘Yajnavalkya Maitreyi Samvaad’

A report

Swami Abhedanandji began the vedantic talks on Brihadaranyaka Upanishad

by explaining the simple logic behind the futility of sorrow. He stated that
sorrow is not situational, not concrete and cannot be quantifiable. Sorrow is
notional. It is just like a dream. As long as the person is seeing it, it is there,
but if he is not seeing it, it is not there. Therefore, sorrow is not physical,
situational, emotional or even intellectual. It is personal. It is related to “I”.
And it is very much in a person’s control. To change a situation is not in one’s
hand. What they feel about the situation is very much in their hand. The only
reason one feels sorrowful is when one feels small. And no other person can
make anyone feel small without his own permission.

The purpose of Vedanta is not to change the situation or change the world. It
is not even interested in changing the mind. It is the sixth eye. It is the means
of knowledge to know Dharma and Brahma. It is just here to expound the
truth, the truth about the Self. It is only interested in eradicating all of human
sorrow and problems forever, not only of this birth but of every birth ever
taken. It is the only means of breaking this cycle of birth, death and re-birth.

Problems humans face are for two reasons - one is because of their ‘vasanas’
and the other is because of their ‘prarabdha’.

FEBRUARY 2025 29
Yagyavalkya said to Maitreyi, ‘I want to enter sannyas. I want to distribute my
wealth between you and my second wife Katyayani.’

Maitreyi said, ‘If I get wealth of the entire world, will I attain immortality?
Will I get rid of all sorrows? By which I don’t get immortality, what use I have
of that? If you know what will impart immortality, tell me that alone.’

Money is a good means to an end, but a very bad goal. Money is needed for
infrastructure only. Money and happiness are not related. Joy has nothing to
do with wealth. Peace comes from quietness of mind. The mind is quietened
by the absence of ahamkar, attachment, anger etc.

The sign of maturity of any person is, what he was not able to leave at a point
in time, he is able to leave it now. Not being able to forgive someone is the
sign of immaturity because he is not able to leave something small. Getting
attached to one thing is the sign of immaturity because he is holding on to
something small and in one form.

The irony of human life is that the most important thing humans have, attract
the least attention and the unimportant things get the maximum attention.

The experiences of life one has, does not depend on situations. What is their
fear, what is their sorrow, what is their joy, what is their love, what is their
hatred - all will depend only on one thing and that one thing is their
understanding about the Self.

If one has the understanding about the self as that if more money will give
more happiness, their course of life will be different. If the understanding is
that someone has troubled them a lot, their perception about that person
will change their life motto. If the understanding is that one had a bad
fortune in his life or that he is better than the other human, all will make his
life different than what it could be.

Anger, joy, frustration, doesn’t depend on the situation. Everything depends

only and only on one thing and that is the understanding about the Self. It
does not depend on the situation being bad or good. It does not depend on
whether they are rich or poor, it does not depend on whether they are old or
young, it does not depend on whether they are insulted or honoured.

FEBRUARY 2025 30
Lord Rama was insulted the maximum in Ramayana but He never felt
insulted. To get insulted is one thing but to feel insulted is a totally different
thing.

Sudama had a difficult ‘prarabdha’ but he never felt bad because of it.
Duryodhana had good ‘prarabdha’ but he never felt good about it. Kaikeyi
had good ‘prarabdha’ but she felt bad in that good ‘prarabdha’ also.

So if anyone says he is sad because his situation is not good or his luck was not
there, he has misunderstood his own Self. The name tags he is identifying
with are not correct. He needs to go back and check. He needs to get the right
information where vedanta will assist him, i.e. if he is wanting to take help.

FEBRUARY 2025 31
Swami Abhedananda Ji’s talks
on ‘Bharat Sharanagati’

A report

Swami Abhedanada’s discourse on Bharat Sharanagati was the part of the

Jnana Yagna which propounded the Bhakti Yoga aspect of the spiritual path.

He began his talks with the profound statement saying, ‘God cannot remove
our sorrows’. He explained this statement by saying just like the un-
manifested fire in the body doesn’t burn it, so also, just the presence of God
is not enough for Him to remove all the problems and sadness in human life.
God needs to have His status changed from being a guest in the body-house
to a permanent resident for Him being able to control the mind and intellect
for the removal of sorrows.

Just like in a car, the person sitting at the back has no control over the driver
who will turn the car, put the break, increase the speed as per his will. Back

FEBRUARY 2025 32
seat driving doesn’t really work. Similarly, God residing like a guest with no
controls and God being the front seat driver, the ‘saarthi’ are two completely
different things. Question to be asked here by each one is, ‘Is God being
allowed to manifest through me?’

The next question in the mind maybe, ‘How do I do that?’ The answer is very
simple. From time to time keep asking Him, ‘Hope you are happy, happy with
the choices this body mind is making.’ The moment one can understand what
makes Ishwar happy or sad, and they align their actions with His joy and
sorrow, the person becomes a ‘sadhak’. And the moment one knows that
they are getting more, a lot more without doing anything to deserve it, they
are on the path of Bhakti.

Bhakti means to appreciate God. There is no time, no place, no situation

when the Lord is not giving something. A Bhaktiful life is learning to be
grateful, knowing to say thank you, not only when there is success, joy, gains
but also when there is failure, sorrow, losses.

In life, everyone has been given a field which has its limitations. The field
includes people, actions, successes, failures, family, home, office etc. Here
there are no options. One cannot decide their field. Only choice is whether
one wants to do ‘bhoga’ or ‘puja’ with that, of that.

‘Bhoga’ is when one personally gets happy or sad by the objects of the field.
They feel they possess it which automatically excludes others from it. The
moment the choice is ‘bhoga’, the personality is crystallised. ‘Bhoga’ is not a
gross thing. It is a ‘drishti’, an outlook when one owns it, be it a son, car or a
problem. The moment the word ‘my’ comes, it is ‘bhoga’ and then others are
excluded including God. This is like sending Lord Rama for ‘vanavaas’.

In ‘puja’, one doesn’t take, they dedicate. This goes beyond the aspect of any
joy or sorrow. If the response to the field and its objects are seeing the
presence of God or ‘Ishwara Tattva’ in it, it is ‘puja’. The moment every action
is analysed with the presence of God, it becomes a ‘puja’ and the person
becomes a ‘pujari’. Do ‘puja’ not karma. Karma will lead to acquiring
something which will lead to ‘Bhoga’. ‘Puja’ will lead to being face to face
with God. The system demands everyone to give themself up, surrender.

FEBRUARY 2025 33
This life has not been given to enjoy or be sad, it is only to see God, to
experience God, to see divinity. The bodies which have been provided to one
and all, are for ‘seva’ not for ‘bhoga’. ‘Seva’ can be done only by a trustee, by a
caretaker not by a ‘bhogi’. Nothing is anyone’s, it is all His. Surrender to that
thought. This is Bharat ‘Sharanagati’.
