Lesson 4: Synonyms and Antonyms
Objective:
1. Students will be able to identify the difference between a synonym and an
antonym.

Materials:
• Class set of the Document: Synonyms and Antonyms
• Class set of dinosaur books from the school library
• Post-it notes
• Pencils
• Chart paper and chart markers

Procedure: (Students will work in groups of three.)


1. Review what a synonym is and what an antonym is as a class.
Synonyms are words that have the same or almost the same meaning.

Antonyms are words that have opposite meanings.


2. Distribute a book and two Post-it notes to each group.

3. Each group will read the text and identify a pair of synonyms and a pair of
antonyms.
4. On the chart paper, make a t-chart with the word “Synonyms” on one column
and “Antonyms” on the other.

5. As a class, review examples of synonyms and antonyms the students found


in the books. Students will place the sticky notes on the t-chart under
“Synonyms” or “Antonyms” as they report to the group.

6. Distribute the Document: Synonyms and Antonyms to each student. They


will work independently to complete the activity.

Extension Idea:
1. Students can create a word search with the synonyms and antonyms they
find. They can exchange their document with a peer.
